Book The Murderous History of Bible Translations

Download or read book The Murderous History of Bible Translations written by Harry Freedman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry Freedman recounts the fascinating and bloody history of the Bible. In 1535, William Tyndale, the first man to produce an English version of the Bible in print, was captured and imprisoned in Belgium. A year later he was strangled and then burned at the stake. His co-translator was also burned. In that same year the translator of the first Dutch Bible was arrested and beheaded. These were not the first, nor were they the last instances of extreme violence against Bible translators. The Murderous History of Bible Translations tells the remarkable, and bloody, story of those who dared translate the word of God. The Bible has been translated far more than any other book. To our minds it is self-evident that believers can read their sacred literature in a language they understand. But the history of Bible translations is far more contentious than reason would suggest. Bible translations underlie an astonishing number of religious conflicts that have plagued the world. Harry Freedman, author of The Talmud: A Biography describes brilliantly the passions and strong emotions that arise when deeply held religious convictions are threatened or undermined. He tells of the struggle for authority and orthodoxy in a world where temporal power was always subjugated to the divine. A world in which the idea of a Bible for all was so important that many were willing to give up their time, their security and often their lives.

Book The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe

Download or read book The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe written by Steven J Lawson and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth century was a dark time for the church in England. Superstition and error obscured the truth of the gospel, and even the clergy had little knowledge of the Bible. Against this bleak backdrop, God raised up a scholar and preacher who would stand with conviction on His Word, even if it meant standing alone. Trusting Scripture as his highest authority, John Wycliffe believed the Bible was what England needed most. Only through the Word of God would the Holy Spirit reform hearts and, in turn, reform the church. But for this to happen, Wycliffe knew that everyday people needed to have the Bible in their own language. In The Bible Convictions of John Wycliffe, Dr. Steven Lawson tells how Wycliffe's devotion to the gospel made him the forerunner of the Reformation who translated the Bible into English for the first time. We're indebted to him for our English Bibles today, and his story can encourage us to establish our convictions on God's Word. This book is part of the Long Line of Godly Men Profile series, edited by Dr. Steven Lawson.

Download or read book Tyndale written by David Teems and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was an outlawed book, a text so dangerous “it could only be countered by the most vicious burnings, of books and men and women.” But what book could incite such violence and bloodshed? The year is 1526. It is the age of Henry VIII and his tragic Anne Boleyn, of Martin Luther and Thomas More. The times are treacherous. The Catholic Church controls almost every aspect of English life, including access to the very Word of God. And the church will do anything to keep it that way. Enter William Tyndale, the gifted, courageous “heretic” who dared translate the Word of God into English. He worked in secret, in exile, in peril, always on the move. Neither England nor the English language would ever be the same again. With thoughtful clarity and a reverence that comes through on every page, David Teems shares a story of intrigue and atrocity, betrayal and perseverance. This is how the Reformation officially reached English shores—and what it cost the men who brought it there. Praise for David Teems’ previous work Majestie “Teems . . . pulls together the story of this enigmatic king [ James] with humor and pathos . . . [A] delightful read in every way.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wycliffe and the First English Bible: An Oration This Commemoration, for which the Board of Managers had made the most careful preparation, and to which many had been looking forward with high hopes, proved to be an occasion of unparalleled interest. More than four thousand persons gained admission to the Academy of Music by ticket; and it is quite impossible to conceive how any company of people could be assembled in one place more thoroughly representative of the intellectual force, the culture, the dignity, the moral worth, and the godliness of this vast community than was that body which met, on the evening of the second day of December, to commemorate the work of John Wycliffe as the translator of the First English Bible. Promptly, at the hour designated for opening the exercises, the platform being crowded by the distinguished guests who had been specially invited by the Board to attend, Frederick S. Winston, Esq., one of the senior Vice-Presidents of the Society, in a few well-chosen words, introduced one of his associates in office, the Hon. Joshua L. Chamberlain, of Maine, as the presiding officer of the evening. At the President's request, the vast assembly rose and united in singing, to the tune of Coronation, the hymn beginning, "All hail the power of Jesus' name!" It was true worship - reverent, hearty, grand. We do not expect to be more profoundly impressed by any service of song until we are permitted to join the "great multitude, which no man could number." The Rev. G. F. Krotel, D.D., pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in this city, then read the nineteenth Psalm and the last three verses of the first chapter of Second Peter. Prayer was offered by the Rev. Roswell D. Hitchcock, D.D., LL. D., president of the Union Theological Seminary. Book excerpt: Here is John Wycliffe's greatest accomplishment: the translation of the Holy Scriptures into English. Producing the first complete English bible, Wycliffe was the first to set aside Latin as the language of the Scriptures and to reach the English people in their own tongue. Working from contemporary manuscripts of the Latin Vulgate, he sought no strange English but only the easiest, most common -- albeit the most Latin-like -- language possible. Wycliffite translations of the New Testament (1380) and Old Testament (1388), which was actually completed by Nicholas of Hereford, opened a new epoch in the history of the Bible. In this new edition, we have provided an increased page size, 12pt. type, and beautified text, with the inclusion of over 50 images of ancient artwork and illuminated texts. LAMP POST has taken a 600 year-old ancient translation and made a modern, clean, readable version of the original Middle English text, a simple yet fun dichotomy, creating a project that all book- and bible-lovers are sure to appreciate and enjoy!

Book The Bible in English

Download or read book The Bible in English written by John D. Long and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Bible get translated into English and made available to English-speaking people? The Bible in English tells the dramatic story of these events, and of the human costs involved. In this concise yet thorough study, John Long answers the above questions, exploring the lives and deaths of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and explaining their roles in translating the Latin Vulgate and the New Testament, respectively. Long discusses the Roman Catholic Church's resistance to translation of the scriptures from Latin into English and other languages, and he shows which parts of Tyndale's translation endured to appear in the King James, Revised Standard, American Standard, New American Standards, New King James, and other translations of the Bible in English. This easy-to-read, comprehensive book is a fascinating study of a dramatic time in the Bible's history.

Book John Wycliffe

Book excerpt: John Wycliffe, the Morning Star of the Reformation, gave us the first English translation of the Bible. A noted scholar and teacher at Oxford, his reliance on the Bible as the sole source of truth stood in stark contrast to the teachings of the Catholic church. His followers went out, teaching and preaching to the common man throughout England. Bowing himself to the authority of the Bible, his great aim was to bring men to the Word. He saw it as the one great authority, the Law that exceeded all other laws. His life’s work continued through men like John Hus and laid the groundwork for Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox and the other great men of the Reformation.
