Book excerpt: The first "accidental president," whose secret maneuverings brought Texas into the Union and set secession in motion When William Henry Harrison died in April 1841, just one month after his inauguration, Vice President John Tyler assumed the presidency. It was a controversial move by this Southern gentleman, who had been placed on the fractious Whig ticket with the hero of Tippecanoe in order to sweep Andrew Jackson's Democrats, and their imperial tendencies, out of the White House. Soon Tyler was beset by the Whigs' competing factions. He vetoed the charter for a new Bank of the United States, which he deemed unconstitutional, and was expelled from his own party. In foreign policy, as well, Tyler marched to his own drummer. He engaged secret agents to help resolve a border dispute with Britain and negotiated the annexation of Texas without the Senate's approval. The resulting sectional divisions roiled the country. Gary May, a historian known for his dramatic accounts of secret government, sheds new light on Tyler's controversial presidency, which saw him set aside his dedication to the Constitution to gain his two great ambitions: Texas and a place in history.

Book excerpt: John Tyler holds the distinction of being the first president to take office due to the death of a sitting president. Tyler was thrust into office on the death of President William Henry Harrison in 1841 after being vice president for only a month. He was at home in Richmond when he got word of Harrison's death. Immediately he rushed to Washington, D.C., to be embroiled in a Constitutional crisis over the secession of power. The Whig Political Party had chosen Tyler as Harrison's running mate in the election of 1840, primarily because he was from the very populous state of Virginia and it was hoped he could bring in the Southern vote. The Whigs were shocked when Tyler became president and didn't fall in line with the party. He vetoed much of their legislation, so they kicked him out of the party! After his one term in office, he was relegated to political obscurity. As the tensions grew between the North and South leading up to the Civil War, Tyler and his new wife, thirty years his junior, became outspoken advocates for slavery and Southern plantation life. Just before his death he was elected as a representative to the Confederate States of America and would be buried in a coffin draped with a Confederate flag. To the Northerners, John Tyler was considered a traitor to the Union cause, making him one of the most controversial presidents in United States history. Book excerpt: Explore the tumultuous era of the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler, in this comprehensive biography that delves into his remarkable life and pivotal role in shaping American history. In John Tyler's book readers will embark on a journey through the complex political landscape of the 19th century, where Tyler's unexpected rise to the presidency left an indelible mark. Born into a prominent Virginia family, Tyler's early years were marked by a commitment to states' rights and opposition to the expanding powers of the federal government. As a staunch supporter of slavery and an advocate for states' sovereignty, Tyler's journey from the Democratic-Republican Party to the Whig Party mirrored the political upheaval of his time. Tyler's ascension to the presidency, following the death of President William Henry Harrison just 31 days into office, set a precedent for future vice presidents. His presidency, characterized by strict adherence to a constructionist view of the Constitution, was marked by clashes with Congress, including the Whigs, who expelled him from the party, dubbing him "His Accidency." Throughout his term, Tyler navigated a challenging political landscape, which included vetoing significant Whig-sponsored bills, such as those related to a national bank and tariff rates. Despite domestic policy stalemates, Tyler achieved several foreign policy successes, including treaties with Britain and China. As a firm believer in manifest destiny, Tyler championed the annexation of Texas, setting the stage for its statehood. This biography sheds light on Tyler's role as a key figure in the expansion of the United States. This book offers readers a compelling look at a leader whose presidency left an enduring legacy, both in terms of his states' rights advocacy and his contributions to America's foreign relations. Whether you are a history enthusiast or seeking to understand a pivotal period in American history, this book provides an insightful and comprehensive portrait of John Tyler.

Book excerpt: A biography of the responsible and dutiful tenth president of the United States, who was the first to take over the office after an elected president died in office. After the death of the 9th President of the United States-William Henry Harrison-the United States faced unanticipated turmoil. A president had never yet died before the end of his term. With rumors flying about and the fate of the still relatively new American government uncertain, Vice President John Tyler stepped into the role of his late childhood friend. John Tyler: A Fascinating Biography of the 10th United States President is the true story of a man who was thrust into leadership when his predecessor's term ended after just 31 days. Despite stepping up to save the country from chaos, John Tyler would soon lose favor with his own party, the Whigs. His belief in his responsibility to the government would drive away allies who were determined to push their own party's agenda. He would also be rejected by the opposing Democratic party, thus becoming a president who belonged to no party at all. John Tyler would never relent in his obligation to the office or his duty to the people.

Book John Tyler the Accidental President

Download or read book John Tyler the Accidental President written by Edward P. Crapol and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first vice president to become president on the death of the incumbent, John Tyler (1790-1862) was derided by critics as "His Accidency." In this biography of the tenth president, Edward P. Crapol challenges depictions of Tyler as a die-hard advocate of states' rights, limited government, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Instead, he argues, Tyler manipulated the Constitution to increase the executive power of the presidency. Crapol also highlights Tyler's faith in America's national destiny and his belief that boundless territorial expansion would preserve the Union as a slaveholding republic. When Tyler sided with the Confederacy in 1861, he was branded as America's "traitor" president for having betrayed the republic he once led.

Book excerpt: This New York Times bestselling “deep dive into the terms of eight former presidents is chock-full of political hijinks—and déjà vu” (Vanity Fair) and provides a fascinating look at the men who came to the office without being elected to it, showing how each affected the nation and world. The strength and prestige of the American presidency has waxed and waned since George Washington. Eight men have succeeded to the presidency when the incumbent died in office. In one way or another they vastly changed our history. Only Theodore Roosevelt would have been elected in his own right. Only TR, Truman, Coolidge, and LBJ were re-elected. John Tyler succeeded William Henry Harrison who died 30 days into his term. He was kicked out of his party and became the first president threatened with impeachment. Millard Fillmore succeeded esteemed General Zachary Taylor. He immediately sacked the entire cabinet and delayed an inevitable Civil War by standing with Henry Clay’s compromise of 1850. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded our greatest president, sided with remnants of the Confederacy in Reconstruction. Chester Arthur, the embodiment of the spoils system, was so reviled as James Garfield’s successor that he had to defend himself against plotting Garfield’s assassination; but he reformed the civil service. Theodore Roosevelt broke up the trusts. Calvin Coolidge silently cooled down the Harding scandals and preserved the White House for the Republican Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression. Harry Truman surprised everybody when he succeeded the great FDR and proved an able and accomplished president. Lyndon B. Johnson was named to deliver Texas electorally. He led the nation forward on Civil Rights but failed on Vietnam. Accidental Presidents shows that “history unfolds in death as well as in life” (The Wall Street Journal) and adds immeasurably to our understanding of the power and limits of the American presidency in critical times.
