Book John Stuart Mill

Download or read book John Stuart Mill written by Samuel Hollander and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill: Political Economist is a revised version of the part of Samuel Hollander's The Economics of John Stuart Mill (1985) treating the theory of economic policy. In this book, Professor Hollander offers a critical yet sympathetic analysis of Mill's quest to accomplish thorough reform of capitalism in the interest of distributive justice while protecting the security of property and contemplating the potential evolution of capitalism into cooperative organization. Part I of the book serves as an introduction to the investigation of Mill's theory of economic policy; Parts II and III include Mill's primary policy recommendations; while Part IV adds a substantial "Overview and Evaluation" reviewing the author's main conclusions. A major concern is Mill's perception of the composition of the "greatest number" whose interests are to be considered by policy-makers; here arises his attitude towards British Imperialism. The author then undertakes thematic comparisons between the positions of Mill and those of Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Marx and Bernstein; and closes with a rejection of the celebrated criticism of Mill's "liberalism" by Friedrich Hayek. Key Features:A comprehensive study of Mill's theory of economic policy providing insights into his views on the primary dilemmas of the modern liberal stateOffers new insights into the Mill–Adam Smith and Mill–Karl Marx relationshipsAn indispensable book for evaluating Friedrich Hayek's lament that Mill undermined "liberalism" and also sundry charges of bourgeois bias, elitism, paternalism, social engineering and even hypocrisyKeywords:Classical Economics;Distributive Justice;Economic Policy;Hayek;Liberalism;Market Failure;Mill;Socialism;UtilitarianismReview: “The present volume constitutes a significant revision and recasting of the second volume of Professor Hollander's magisterial The Economics of John Stuart Mill, originally published in 1985. Incorporating the latest scholarship as well as his own considered views of Mill, Hollander has produced another major contribution to the history of classical economics. His characteristic method of careful and thorough textual exegesis supports a nuanced and fair assessment of Mill's normative thinking in light of multiple interpretive challenges. As such this is a most welcome and important contribution to the perennially fascinating study of J S Mill.” Professor Jeffrey T Young St. Lawrence University, New York “Samuel Hollander is one of the most knowledgeable scholars of classical economics in the world today. In this volume he revisits John Stuart Mill's political economy, offering a newly reintegrated approach to Mill's broad agenda of economic and social reform. With a masterful appreciation of Mill's theoretical and philosophical roots, Hollander draws a compelling picture of a Mill too honest to soften his critique of the British economy of his day even as he maintained his commitment to liberty and faith in competition. Hollander caries his theme across a range of practical policy questions and even to the problem of imperialism, where Mill has not infrequently been accused of hypocrisy. The volume ends with two fine chapters that only Hollander could write, the first on Mill's relation to the classical economists from Smith through Marx, and the second a most telling critique of Hayek's ambivalent relation with Mill. This is a book not only for scholars, but also for politicians, advisors and citizens interested in what it means to make policy out of economics.” Professor Joseph Persky University of Illinois at Chicago “This wonderful book is vintage Hollander - immensely learned, deeply insightful, and eminently readable.” Professor Andrew Farrant Dickinson College, Pennsylvania “No one has done so much as Samuel Hollander to enhance our understanding and deepen our appreciation of the richness and enduring relevance of J S Mill's economic thought. Professor Hollander, a towering presence among those engaged in studying the history and legacy of classical political economy, here revisits the character and significance of Mill's position on fundamental issues of economic policy. He does so in light of the large store of important commentary on Mill accrued since the publication thirty years ago of Professor Hollander's monumental The Economics of John Stuart Mill. This material he treats with an exemplary courtesy and fair-mindedness. To his reconsideration of Mill's policy analyses and prescriptions Professor Hollander brings a tireless and penetrating intellect that executes a formidably thorough inquiry into all aspects of Millian economic thought in its bearing on problems of policy. Informed throughout by a massive learning and profound scholarship, John Stuart Mill: Political Economist will be welcomed as the crowning achievement of Professor Hollander's decades-long encounter with the economic thought of J S Mill.” Professor Bruce Kinzer Kenyon College, Ohio “This compelling, exhaustive account guides us through Mill's collected writings as well as an extensive secondary literature in providing a brief but penetrating guide to the policy-oriented elements of Mill's economic ideas. Hollander aims to restore Mill's "Principles" to the center of our interpretation of his oeuvre, and to reposition Mill in light of the other leading contributors to political economy of his epoch. The best available introduction to the subject, this book will be welcomed by readers across the humanities and social sciences.” Professor Greg Claeys University of London “Three decades ago, as a grad' student, I read Samuel Hollander's magisterial two volume study of J S Mill as an economist. As I am not an academic economist I was especially drawn to the second volume which I thought then was one of the best and most insightful accounts of Mill's political and moral theory. The publication of a significantly revised version of that text is therefore something for the scholarly community to welcome. But this is no mere reissue, Hollander has up-dated and restructured his argument to present the substance as a significant new book in its own right. We see that Hollander's insights and incisive scholarly judgments are merely not diminished but are enhanced by his mastery of the detail and the scholarship. He remains one of the giants of Mill studies alongside his own hero John Robson. This book is insightful, authoritative and important. Jaded scholars of J S Mill will be refreshed by this book and all serious students of Mill and of nineteenth and twentieth century British history and political, social and economic thought should relish this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.” Professor Paul Kelly London School of Economics and Political Science

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Capaldi's biography of John Stuart Mill traces the ways in which Mill's many endeavours are related and explores the significance of Mill's contribution to metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, social and political philosophy, the philosophy of religion, and the philosophy of education. He shows how Mill was groomed for his life by both his father James Mill, and Jeremy Bentham, the two most prominent philosophical radicals of the early nineteenth century. Yet Mill revolted against this education and developed friendships with both Thomas Carlyle and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who introduced him to Romanticism and political conservatism. A special feature of this biography is the attention devoted to his relationship with Harriet Taylor. No one exerted a greater influence than the woman he was eventually to marry. Nicholas Capaldi reveals just how deep her impact was on Mill's thinking about the emancipation of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original, Dutch version of this book served in 1979 as a doctoral disserta tion in philosophy at the Free University in Amsterdam. In this preface to the - slightly revised - English translation, I wish once again to express my gratitude to my supervisors, Prof. J. van der Hoeven of the Free University and Prof. G. Nuchelmans of the University of Leiden, for their excellent and stimulating support. Professor van der Hoeven was associated with this project from the outset. It was a privilege to benefit from his incisive commentaries, especially in those instances where the objective was to break through to more fundamental insights. I shall not lightly forget his friendly and heartening encouragement. I am equally grateful for my discussions with Professor Nuchelmans. I almost always tried to follow his advice, since it was based upon awesome expertness and erudition. I am happy to have found in the person of Herbert Donald Morton, Th.M., M.A., an able and enthusiastic translator. Drs. Gerben Groenewoud made the translations of a number of the Latin citations. I acknowledge permission from Routledge and Kegan Paul and the University of Toronto Press to quote from The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill. Book Logic and Reality in the Philosophy of John Stuart Mill

Download or read book Logic and Reality in the Philosophy of John Stuart Mill written by G. Scarre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Nobody reads Mill today,' wrote a reviewer in Time magazine a few years ago. ! One could scarcely praise Mr Melvin Maddocks, who penned that remark, for his awareness of the present state of Mill studies, for of all nineteenth century philosophers who wrote in English, it is 1. S. Mill who remains the most read today. Yet it would not be so far from the truth to say that very few people pay much serious attention nowadays to Mill's writings about logic and metaphysics (as distinct from those on ethical and social issues), despite the fact that Mill put enormous effort into their composition and through them exerted a considerable influen ce on the course of European philosophy for the rest of his century. But the only sections of A System of Logic (1843) and An Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy (1865) to which much reference is now made comprise only a small proportion of those very large books, and the prevailing assumption is that Mill's theories about logical and meta physical questions are, with few exceptions, of merely antiquarian in terest. Bertrand Russell once said that Mill's misfortune was to be born at the wrong time (Russell (1951), p. 2). It can certainly appear that Mill chose an inauspicious time to attempt a major work on logic.

Book excerpt: The arguments advanced in the second chapter of On Liberty (1859) have become the touchstone for practically every discussion of freedom of speech, yet the broader development of John Stuart Mill's ideas concerning intellectual liberty has generally been neglected. This work attempts to fill that lacuna by looking beyond On Liberty, in order to understand the evolution of Mill's ideas concerning freedom of thought and discussion.

Download or read book John Stuart Mill written by William Stafford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1998-10-19 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was one of Britain's greatest philosophers and radical politicians, whose views had a profound influence on thinking on liberty, social policy and gender relations. William Stafford's accessible study outlines Mill's reputation from his lifetime to the present, together with a discussion of the major areas of his moral and political thought. This book presents him as a consistent and engaged radical politician. In relation to Ireland and India, he argued that British rule could only be justified if it benefited its imperial subjects. While defending democracy, he thought subtly about its problems at a time when it was still an open question, an untried experiment. He advocated a non-paternalistic, non-welfarist form of socialism which combined community with self-reliance. He played a leading role in placing women's issues on the agenda - not only political and employment rights, but also male violence against and sexual exploitation of women, 'sexist' language and the oppressive construction of gender.

Book John Stuart Mill and the Ethic of Human Growth

Download or read book John Stuart Mill and the Ethic of Human Growth written by D.A. Habibi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this well-researched, comprehensive study of J.S. Mill, Professor Habibi argues that the persistent, dominant theme of Mill's life and work was his passionate belief in human improvement and progress. Several Mill scholars recognize this; however, numerous writers overlook his 'growth ethic', and this has led to misunderstandings about his value system. This study defines and establishes the importance of Mill's growth ethic and clears up misinterpretations surrounding his notions of higher and lower pleasures, positive and negative freedom, the status of children, the legitimacy of authority, and support for British colonialism. Drawing from the entire corpus of Mill's writings, as well as the extensive secondary literature, Habibi has written the most focused, sustained analysis of Mill's grand, leading principle. This book will be useful to college students in philosophy and intellectual history as well as specialists in these fields.

  • Author : Dale E. Miller
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2013-04-30
  • ISBN : 0745654789
  • Pages : 293 pages

Download or read book John Stuart Mill written by Dale E. Miller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a clear and highly readable introduction to the ethical and social-political philosophy of John Stuart Mill. Dale E. Miller argues for a "utopian" reading of Mill's utilitarianism. He analyses Mill's views on happiness and goes on to show the practical, social and political implications that can be drawn from his utilitarianism, especially in relation to the construction of morality, individual freedom, democratic reform, and economic organization. By highlighting the utopian thinking which lies at the heart of Mill's theories, Miller shows that rather than allowing for well-being for the few, Mill believed that a society must do everything in its power to see to it that each individual can enjoy a genuinely happy life if the happiness of its members is to be maximized. Miller provides a cogent and careful account of the main arguments offered by Mill, considers the critical responses to his work, and assesses its legacy for contemporary philosophy. Lucidly and persuasively written, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars seeking to understand the continued importance of Mill's thinking.

Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill considered his A System of Logic, first published in 1843, the methodological foundation and intellectual groundwork of his later works in ethical, social, and political theory. Yet no book has attempted in the past to engage with the most important aspects of Mill's Logic. This volume brings together leading scholars to elucidate the key themes of this influential work, looking at such topics as his philosophy of language and mathematics, his view on logic, induction and deduction, free will, argumentation, ethology and psychology, as well as his account of normativity, kinds of pleasure, philosophical and political method and the "Art of Life."

Book John Stuart Mill and Representative Government

Download or read book John Stuart Mill and Representative Government written by Dennis F. Thompson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Mill regarded Considerations on Representative Government as a mature statement of his theory of democracy, critics have tended to treat it less seriously than most of his other major works. Dennis Thompson argues that this neglect has led to inadequate interpretations of Mill's thought on democracy. Drawing where appropriate on other writings by Mill, the author restores a balanced view by studying the structure of the theory expounded in Representative Government. Representative Government is shown to be more coherent and systematic than has generally been assumed. In the first two chapters the author examines separately Mill's views of political participation and competence. He then considers the philosopher's effort to combine participation and competence at any particular time in a theory of government and to reduce conflict between them over time in a theory of development. Basic features of Mill's view are subjected to critical scrutiny, and modifications are suggested to overcome the deficiencies noted. Throughout, Mill's claims are compared with the ideas and findings of recent social science, leading to the conclusion that his theory remains a valuable resource for contemporary thinking about democracy.
