Book Assessment in Technical and Professional Communication

Download or read book Assessment in Technical and Professional Communication written by Margaret Hundleby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on both how and why assessment serves as a key element in the teaching and practice of technical and professional communication. The collection is organized to form a dual approach: on the one hand, it offers a landscape view of the activities involved in assessment - examining how it works at institutional, program, and classroom levels; on the other, it surveys the implications of using assessment for formulating, maintaining, and extending the teaching and practice of technical communication. The book offers teachers, students, scholars, and practitioners alike evidence of the increasingly valuable role of assessment in the field, as it supports and enriches our thinking and practice. No other volume has addressed the demands of and the expectations for assessment in technical communication. Consequently, the book has two key goals. The first is to be as inclusive as is feasible for its size, demonstrating the global operation of assessment in the field. For this reason, descriptions of assessment practice lead to examinations of some key feature of the landscape captured by the term 'technical communication'. The second goal is to retain the public and cooperative approach that has characterized technical communication from the beginning. To achieve this, the book represents a 'conversation', with contributors chosen from among practicing, highly active technical communication teachers and scholars; and the chapters set up pairs of opening statement and following response. The overriding purpose of the volume, therefore, is to invite the whole community into the conversation about assessment in technical communication.

Book A Social History of American Technology

Download or read book A Social History of American Technology written by Ruth Schwartz Cowan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Social History of American Technology, Second Edition, tells the story of American technology from the tools used by its earliest inhabitants to the technological systems--cars and computers, aircraft and antibiotics--that we are familiar with today. Ruth Schwartz Cowan and Matthew H. Hersch demonstrate how technological change has always been closely related to social and economic development, and examine the important mutual relationships between social history and technological change. They explain how the unique characteristics of American cultures and American geography have affected the technologies that have been invented, manufactured, and used throughout the years--and also the reverse: how those technologies have affected the daily lives, the unique cultures, and the environments of all Americans.

  • Author : Shyon Baumann
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Wine to Water

Download or read book Wine to Water written by Doc Hendley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The captivating story of an ordinary bartender turned humanitarian who’s changing the world through clean water. Doc Hendley never set out to be a hero. A small-town bartender, Doc loved his Harley, music, and booze. Then he learned about the world’s water crisis, and decided to help by hosting fundraisers. But he wanted to do more and soon found himself traveling to one of the world’s most dangerous hot spots: Darfur, Sudan. Doc was immediately cast into a crisis zone. The Sudanese government was wiping out entire villages through horrific state-sponsored genocide—and one of the chief weapons was water. By dumping corpses in water sources and shooting up water bladders, Janjaweed terrorists doomed hundreds of thousands of citizens to dehydration, disease, and death. At just twenty-five years old, Doc was inexperienced, untrained, and in constant danger—but he stepped up to save lives. Alternatively begging international organizations for funding and dodging trigger-happy Janjaweed, Doc began drilling and repairing wells, bringing drinking water to those who desperately needed it. Wine to Water is his story about braving tribal warfare in far-flung regions of the world, and an inspirational tale of how one ordinary person can make a difference.

Book Rfd 3

  • Author : Harry Addison
  • Publisher : Pelican Publishing
  • Release : 1994-10-01
  • ISBN : 9781565541146
  • Pages : 95 pages

Download or read book Rfd 3 written by Harry Addison and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1994-10-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In RFD #3, Harry Wayne Addison, an eloquent spokesman of his rural north Louisiana heritage, addresses many of that tradition's values, their importance to his life, and their application to a broad range of human relationships. Perhaps north Louisiana's premier native-born humorist, Addison is renowned throughout the area as a gifted after-dinner speaker, annually making some seventy-five appearances throughout Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. In this volume, Addison comments wittily, often wryly, and always perceptively about incidents, events, and character-building circumstances of his rural upbringing. The title of this book is derived from one such anecdote. Nostalgic in tone and earthy in approach, RFD #3 focuses upon topics such as love, friendship, politics, religion, and family life through a series of vignettes gleaned from his country boyhood. His staunch belief that children should be raised by the book rather than by the belt inspired him to write his first volume, Write That Down for Me, Daddy. A native of Mansfield, Louisiana, Addison was reared in the small community of Swartz, near Monroe. A real-estate agent for the city of Monroe, Addison was past president of the West Monroe Kiwanis Club and past chairman of the library board of the West Monroe Chamber of Commerce.
