Book What Did Jesus Look Like

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

Book John Through Old Testament Eyes

Download or read book John Through Old Testament Eyes written by Karen H. Jobes and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Testament commentary steeped in the Old Testament Through Old Testament Eyes is a new kind of commentary series that illuminates the Old Testament backgrounds, allusions, patterns, and references saturating the New Testament. These links were second nature to the New Testament authors and their audiences, but today's readers often cannot see them. Bible teachers, preachers, and students committed to understanding Scripture will gain insight through these rich Old Testament connections, which clarify puzzling passages and explain others in fresh ways. In John Through Old Testament Eyes, Karen Jobes reveals how the Old Testament background of the Gospel of John extends far beyond quotes of Old Testament scripture or mention of Old Testament characters. Jobes discusses the history, rituals, images, metaphors, and symbols from the Old Testament that give meaning to John's teaching about Jesus--his nature and identity, his message and mission--and about those who believe in him. Avoiding overly technical discussions and interpretive debates to concentrate on Old Testament influences, volumes in the Though Old Testament Eyes series combine rigorous, focused New Testament scholarship with deep respect for the entire biblical text.

Book Seeing Through the Eyes of Jesus

Download or read book Seeing Through the Eyes of Jesus written by John Baggett and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than looking at Jesus -- the popular conception of the "historical Jesus" -- John Baggett contends that we should instead look with Jesus at the realities of God and neighbor as he perceived them. Baggett incorporates the witness of the key human relationships of Jesus, looking at why those earliest believers and friends considered him divine. Baggett then asks how Christ's transcendence can ultimately translate to significance for life and faith in today's story.

Book Reading the Gospel of John through Palestinian Eyes

Download or read book Reading the Gospel of John through Palestinian Eyes written by Yohanna Katanacho and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians from diverse cultural, religious, and political contexts have been studying the Gospel of John for almost two thousand years. In this insightful reflection on the Fourth Gospel, Rev Yohanna Katanacho invites us to encounter the text anew, this time from the perspective of a twenty-first century Palestinian Christian. Challenging the claim that Christ belongs to a particular denomination, nation, or race, Katanacho presents the Gospel of John as introducing a new world order. In John’s account of Jesus’s life, the rich history of Judaism is reinterpreted in light of the inclusive Christ, the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies, teachings, and promises. Walking us through the reinterpretation of holy space, holy time, holy history, holy community, holy land, and life itself, Katanacho demonstrates how John’s gospel establishes a new identity for the people of God – an identity defined not by race or nationality but by suffering and love. Containing questions for reflection designed with preachers in mind, this accessible book will be a great help for Christians seeking to mine the beautiful riches of spiritual truth in this often-complicated gospel.

Book Seeing Through the Eyes of the Spirit

Download or read book Seeing Through the Eyes of the Spirit written by John Oti and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-06-23 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeing through the Eyes of the Spirit is a Bible-based practical approach to the place of dreams, visions, and revelations in the lives of those who are believers in Christ Jesus. It is obvious that some, even among Christians, have problems believing in dreams and revelations as a critical component of spirituality in the times we now live. However, a close and a thorough examination of the Bible in general and the book of Acts provides the evidence that what God did in the past does happen in our time because God has not changed. Moreover, further evidence in the book of Hebrews notes, Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In other words, those who are believers in Christ do experience seeing through visions and receiving revelations from God. Regardless of the skepticism of the modern and postmodern worldview, God moves in supernatural ways to accomplish his plans on earth. Furthermore, everyone who has read Acts and the entire New Testament will also come to the conclusion that the ability to see through dreams and visions did not end with the apostles of the Lamb or the early church fathers. Rather, visions and revelations are a commonplace phenomenon for anyone in any age who has had a genuine encounter with the living Christ. Without a doubt, there are those who claim to have visions and who have made such claims when their experiences have not been proven to be biblically based or an authentic, divine experience from God. However, just because such people misrepresent the gospel does not negate the fact those with visions and revelations in this time truly had such encounters from God. Seeing through the Eyes of the Spirit is a signature of my own experiences in many years of the ministry. I trust that the testimony and the teachings from the holy scriptures in this book will inspire future Christian leaders to be more prepared for supernatural encounters from the Lord.

Book Eyes on Jesus Through John s Gospel

Download or read book Eyes on Jesus Through John s Gospel written by Tim MacIntosh and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you want to draw closer to Jesus ... hear his voice, watch his life, know his heart? COME ON A JOURNEY through John’s Gospel. As one of Jesus’ closest disciples—a key member of his inner circle—John was an eyewitness of his life and ministry. He heard Jesus’ teaching, experienced the miracles, witnessed his character, stood grieving at the cross and then believing (in utter amazement) at the empty tomb. Early on, John declares, “We have seen his glory.” By implication, he wants us to see that glory too. That’s why he writes. So come on the journey. Eyes on Jesus: Through John’s Gospel will lead you through John’s account in a series of daily devotionals that strike a healthy balance between theological understanding and personal application. Ideal for personal or group study, each devotional entry includes a prayer to “jump-start” readers’ conversation with God and a point of reflection to encourage discussion, contemplation, and transformation. Eyes on Jesus—that’s the point.

Book Reading James with New Eyes

Download or read book Reading James with New Eyes written by Robert L. Webb and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters of James, 1 and 2 Peter, and Jude are among the most neglected letters of the New Testament. Thus, methodological advances in New Testament study tend to arise among the Gospels or Pauline letters. But now these letters are beginning to receive increased attention in the scholarly community. Reading James With New Eyes is the first of four volumes that incorporate new research in this area. The essays collected here examine the impact of recent methodological developments in New Testament studies to the letter of James, including, for example, rhetorical, social-scientific, socio-rhetorical, ideological and hermeneutical methods, as they contribute to understanding James and its social context. Each essay has a similar three-fold structure, making them perfect for use by students: a description of the methodological approach; the application of the methodological approach to James; and a conclusion identifying how the methodological approach contributes to a fresh understanding of the letter.
