Believes in some instances Knox has allocated more land than the claimants will ever demand. He has also advised the Winslow family that their interest is well worth [dollar sign] 30,000. Says although the claim may appear high, given the quantity of land in question the price equals no more than 52 cents per acre and only 45 cents per acre if the land in Frankfort is taken into account. Goes into further detail regarding various land claims, paying particular attention to Governor Shirley's claims which is the largest claim contested. States Shirley's claim is so situated and has so many claims against that he doubts Shirley's grandchildren will ever trouble themselves to administer upon it. Continues to discuss the Winslow family's shares, the German settler's claims, along with claims in Frankfort, St. Georges, and Waldoboro. Provides an estimate of land belonging to the Winslow family.

Book Acadia Maine and New Scotland Marginal Colonies in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Acadia Maine and New Scotland Marginal Colonies in the Seventeenth Century written by John G. Reid and published by Heritage. This book was released on 1981-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acadia, Maine, and New Scotland were similarly conceived as major colonizing attempts by France, England, and Scotland, respectively. In this comparative study, Professor Reid explores the colonizing styles of the parent countries and describes the interaction of the Europeans with the native peoples and with the physical environment of the northeastern seaboard. Colonial development is traced from the earliest attempts throught the elaborate schemes of each country in the 1620s, which produced the first serious idsjunction between European concept and American reality. During the crucial, formative years between 1630 and 1650, the three emerged as marginal colonies, still unable to harmonize with their environment. The author discusses the demise of New Scotland by 1650 and the fragile conditions of Acadia and Maine, which resulted from the pressures of potent external forces. As the century went on, Acadia and Maine were open to the conflicting influences of the European governments, the powerful neighbouring colony of Massachusetts, adn the native peoples of the region. A complex and destructive series of wars was the culmination. Although nothing major differences, Reid emphasizes the similarities among the colonies, each of which failed to fulfil the expectations of its parent country: he reflects on this failure as an important exception to the seemingly ineluctable progress of European colonization in America.

Book Three Centuries and the Island

Download or read book Three Centuries and the Island written by Andrew Hill Clark and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1959-12-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is one of the first in the field of historical geography to be published in Canada. Written after exhaustive research, it uses a particular approach to the study of historical agricultural geography which concentrates on the use of basic distributional evidence for the description and interpretation of the changing character of any region through any period of time. By the analysis of over 1200 maps, some of which form part of the text of the book, Professor Clark studies agriculture as the dominant economic activity of Prince Edward Island and traces with remarkable clarity through the changing patterns of land culture throughout the province. The book begins with a description of the natural geography of the Island which, despite its small size, shows surprising variety. It goes on to prove the necessity for careful consideration of the background of habit and prejudice of groups of different origin when studying the changing geographies of land use. The settlement of the Island is traced from the time it was used as a summer campground by the Micmac Indians. Details of the arrival of the first Acadians, the transfer to British rule, and the subsequent influx of Scottish, Irish, Loyalist, and English stock are given together with evidence of the effect their coming had on the agriculture of the region. One hundred and fifty-five maps and sixteen tables to illustrate the distribution of population by area and origin, changes in kind and distribution of crops, census of livestock, etc., from the early eighteenth century to the present day, and from the days when the potato was unknown as a crop through the fur-farming era. The author presents this study as part of his life-work, a programme of research on the settlement overseas in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries of the people from the British Isles. He is descended from Prince Edward Island settlers and writes of the province from a background of personal knowledge of, and affection for, the land of his forbears.
