Book John Knox and the British Reformations

Download or read book John Knox and the British Reformations written by Roger A. Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998. John Knox is one of the towering figures of the European reformation, his name synonymous with hard-line evangelical Protestantism, and his influence spreading far beyond his native Scotland. Yet no scholarly biography of Knox has appeared for over 20 years, and no attempt has been made to re-evaluate his contribution to the reformation in the light of the massive advances in scholarship made in recent years. This volume, therefore, seeks to reassess Knox's career in the context of the European Reformation as a whole, but with particular reference to his impact in Scotland and England. The 13 contributors, all acknowledged authorities in the field, together provide a significant reappraisal of Knox and his role in the British Reformations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Knox's First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women, one of the most notorious political tracts of the sixteenth century, has been more often referred to than read. Its true significance as one of a series of pamphlets which Knox wrote in 1558 on the theme of rebellion is therefore easily overlooked. This new edition of his writings includes not only The First Blast, but the three other tracts of 1558 -The Letter to the Regent of Scotland, The Appellation to the Scottish Nobility, and The Letter to the Commonalty of Scotland - in which Knox confronted the problem of resistance to tyranny. Related material, mostly drawn from Knox's own History of the Reformation in Scotland, illuminates the development of his views before 1558 and illustrates their application in the specific circumstances of the Scottish Reformation and the rule of Mary Queen of Scots. This edition thus brings together for the first time all of Knox's most important writings on rebellion.

Book excerpt: While the Reformed tradition originated with Huldrych Zwingli and was more fully developed with John Calvin, it was John Knox who made significant contributions to this movement as it unfolded in Scotland. John Knox: An Introduction to His Life and Works traces the life and thought of John Knox in a succinct and readable way. While a number of biographies tell the story of the famous Scottish reformer, professors Kyle and Johnson take the reader in a different direction, offering an interpretation of his writings. They take a chronological approach to his works--leading the reader through his early years, his exile, and his return to Scotland--allowing them to speak for themselves, an approach that also tells the story of Knox's life and ideas.

Book John Knox

Book excerpt: John Knox has seldom been taken seriously as a literary figure; in fact it is often assumed that he was hostile to 'art' of any kind. This study analyses John Knox's style of writing and suggests that Knox was one of the most highly rhetorical of all the sixteenth-century prose writers, although his prose was never decorative. Early chapters set Knox in his proper context by focusing on Scottish prose from John Ireland's Meroure of Wyssdome, through to The Complaynt of Scotland, before examining Knox's admonitory public epistles, his personal correspondence, and his more exclusively theological tracts. The final two chapters are devoted to his magnum opus, The Historie of the Reformatioun of Religioun in Scotland, the first truly great work of Scots prose, and show that Knox's talents represent the culmination of homiletic and historiographical traditions, the maturation of incipient religious forces in the sixteenth century and, as far as prose is concerned, the earliest establishment in Scotland of a fully rounded literary personality.

Book John Knox s History of the Reformation in Scotland

Download or read book John Knox s History of the Reformation in Scotland written by James Kirk and published by Bloomsbury T&T Clark. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 1280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new scholarly, fully annotated edition of John Knox's classic History of the Reformation in Scotland is long overdue. Knox, a key figure in the international Reformation and the establishment of the Protestant Church in Scotland, began this work as a defence of the revolutionary stage of the Scottish Reformation (1558-60), and extended it to include accounts of earlier Scottish reformers and the personal rule of Mary Queen of Scots (1561-1567). The 'History' is the premier contemporary narrative account of the Scottish Reformation and key to any study of the period. Its value is enhanced by Knox's inclusion of documentary sources (many of which are otherwise unrecorded), and its scope benefits from Knox's experience as a reformer in England, Germany and Switzerland. It is also an important source of information on Knox's career and his relationship with leading figures of his day. The last scholarly edition in the original orthography was edited by David Laing in 1847. The present edition aims to reproduce Knox's text using the earliest surviving manuscript, dated to 1566, taking account of variations in all other early manuscripts. The result is an extensive revision of the Laing text, which it will replace as the standard edition. This will be a vital requirement for all libraries and collections in religion and history throughout the world. The work includes an Introduction, full indexes to persons (with biographical details), places and subjects, over two hundred references to biblical quotations and allusions, a map and glossary.
