Book excerpt: John Keble was one of the founders of the Oxford Movement, which in the 1830s undertook the project of re-asserting and broadening the catholic basis of Anglicanism. The 150th anniversary of Keble's death in 1866 is an occasion to revisit his contribution to Anglicanism. The present tract is based on an extensive study of his writings-poetry, sermons, and scholarship. Extensive, but not exhaustive, since Keble had the prodigious productivity typical of the energetic Victorians, and I have not bound myself to read every word he wrote. There are so many different compilations of his sermons, for example, that it is difficult to keep count, but something like 600 different sermons seem to have appeared in print.It is his writings as poet and as preacher that explain why Keble has found a place in the Anglican calendar. These two aspects are not separable, because Keble's poetry is full of religious teaching, often expounded in a sermon-like manner, and his sermons have an eloquence and intensity that make them more poetic than his writing in verse. It is on these parts of his written record that I have inevitably concentrated.I make no claim to have undertaken original biographical research into Keble, but, for the sake of completeness and context, in the first section I briefly sum up the well-known facts of his life, adding my own commentary on what we can learn from those facts. In this section too I add comments on Keble's contribution as a scholar.Anthony Miller
