This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John G. Whittier, the Poet of Freedom The full story of the part Whittier played in the anti-slavery movement is here set down for the first time in book form. Many interesting and unexpected things plowed up during my researches into such subjects as the mobbings in which Whittier was a sufferer, the burning of Pennsylvania Hall in Phila delphia, the estrangement of years which Garrison's narrow intolerance produced between himself and Whittier, with the subsequent reconciliation of the two, and the story of the rise and fall of the Liberty Party, the lineal predecessor Of the party that saved the Union. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Greenleaf Whittier: His Life and Work To my American friends I feel a word of apology is due for my writing of Whittier without having visited their great Continent. This has not been possible owing to pressure of work, and I must ask them to allow my love for their poet, and for the American people, to overshadow the blemishes that I fear they may discover. I have endeavoured to portray what manner of man Whittier was; his poetic genius, the way in which he met difficulties, financial and otherwise, the sacrifice he made for those whom he loved, the abandon ment of all ambition for the cause of freedom, and the genuine humility and sense of humour which sweetened all his years. As a Quaker, he believed in the Divine Immanence. He believed that God's voice can be heard in all hearts who will be obedient, and his obedience produced his life. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier, Vol. 1 of 2 Mr. Whittier's editorial work upon partisan papers developed a taste for politics and ambition for political preferment, as shown by letters now for the first time published. These letters do not fairly represent him when judged by the tenor of his later life, but without them we could have no true idea of his early manhood, and of the great change which marked his religious, literary, and political life when about twenty-seven years of age. Previous to this time, while irreproachable in morals, no deep conviction of duty seems to have nerved him to self-denying, heroic action. He was evidently looking forward to a political rather than a literary career. Comparatively little has hitherto been known of the first thirty years of his life, beyond the fact that he edited political papers in Boston, Haverhill, and Hartford, and it may surprise his friends of the present generation to find that he was an aspirant for congressional honors, which, but for the constitutional limit as to age, he had a fair prospect of obtaining, in a district where he enjoyed exceptional popularity. As a power in politics, even when working in a small minority, Whittier has never been rightly estimated. In several of his poems he speaks of his consecration to the cause of freedom as involv ing a change in all the motives of his life; butthis has not hitherto been taken so literally as it will now be seen was intended. While his serious work at this period was in politics, he was at the same time winning reputation as a poet, by verses which, though highly complimented by poets and critics of national repute, were suppressed by the more cultivated taste and judgment of his later years. At the age of twenty-five we find him entering upon a contest in which every talent was to be used as a weapon of assault against a system which he had no reason to suppose would be overthrown in his day. In this field, the skill he had acquired in politics was not thrown away, and we can read ily understand why he favored the political wing of the anti-slavery forces. With his genius for statecraft, nothing else could have been expected, and the reader can but admire the skill he exer cised in keeping his despised cause before the peo ple, and compelling the unwilling help of able men, who at heart were opposed to his aims and measures. As the trusted adviser of statesmen, the extent of his influence has never been fully appreciated beyond the circle of his intimate friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Greenleaf Whittier: His Life, Genius, and Writings Who does not admire and love John Greenleaf Whittier? And who does not delight to do him honor? He was a man raised up by Providence to meet an exigency in human history, and an exigency in the experiences of the United States. And hemet the exigency with distinguished success. He was a true exponent of New England life and the New England spirit. He drew his inspiration from the soil where he was born, from the necessities of the times, from the demands of human rights, from the love of God and of man. He was a unique man. We knew not his like before him. We shall see no other like him after him. He was the product of his age; and the age in which he lived belonged to him, and he to and In it. He was a unique literary man. He was so meek and retiring; he was so keenly sensitive to the wrongs done by man to man; he was so devoid of self-seeking;so pure and exalted in motive, and so sturdy a defender of the rights of the oppressed; he was so full of trust in God that we seem never to have seen his equal among men.
