Book John Dewey s Theory of Art Experience and Nature

Download or read book John Dewey s Theory of Art Experience and Nature written by Thomas M. Alexander and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Alexander shows that the primary, guiding concern of Dewey's philosophy is his theory of aesthetic experience. He directly challenges those critics, most notably Stephen Pepper and Benedetto Croce, who argued that this area is the least consistent part of Dewey's thought. The author demonstrates that the fundamental concept in Dewey's system is that of "experience" and that paradigmatic treatment of experience is to be found in Dewey's analysis of aesthetics and art. The confusions resulting from the neglect of this orientation have led to prolonged misunderstandings, eventual neglect, and unwarranted popularity for ideas at odds with the genuine thrust of Dewey's philosophical concerns. By exposing the underlying aesthetic foundations of Dewey's philosophy, Alexander aims to rectify many of these errors, generating a fruitful new interest in Dewey.

Book John Dewey and the Artful Life

Download or read book John Dewey and the Artful Life written by Scott R. Stroud and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetic experience has had a long and contentious history in the Western intellectual tradition. Following Kant and Hegel, a human’s interaction with nature or art frequently has been conceptualized as separate from issues of practical activity or moral value. This book examines how art can be seen as a way of moral cultivation. Scott Stroud uses the thought of the American pragmatist John Dewey to argue that art and the aesthetic have a close connection to morality. Dewey gives us a way to reconceptualize our ideas of ends, means, and experience so as to locate the moral value of aesthetic experience in the experience of absorption itself, as well as in the experience of reflective attention evoked by an art object.

Book Democratic Education and the Public Sphere

Download or read book Democratic Education and the Public Sphere written by Masamichi Ueno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers John Dewey’s philosophy of democratic education and his theory of public sphere from the perspective of the reconstruction and redefinition of the dominant liberalist movement. By bridging art education and public sphere, and drawing upon contemporary mainstream philosophies, Ueno urges for the reconceptualization of the education of mainstream liberalism and indicates innovative visions on the public sphere of education. Focusing on Dewey’s theory of aesthetic education as an origin of the construction of public sphere, chapters explore his art education practices and involvement in the Barnes Foundation of Philadelphia, clarifying the process of school reform based on democratic practice. Dewey searched for an alternative approach to public sphere and education by reimagining the concept of educational right from a political and ethical perspective, generating a collaborative network of learning activities, and bringing imaginative meaning to human life and interaction. This book proposes educational visions for democracy and public sphere in light of Pragmatism aesthetic theory and practice. Democratic Education and the Public Sphere will be key reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate studies in the fields of the philosophy of education, curriculum theory, art education, and educational policy and politics. The book will also be of interest to policy makers and politicians who are engaged in educational reform.

Book Dewey and the Aesthetic Unconscious

Download or read book Dewey and the Aesthetic Unconscious written by Bethany Henning and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dewey was the most celebrated and publicly engaged American philosopher in the twentieth century. His naturalistic theory of “experience” generated new approaches to education and democracy and re-grounded philosophy’s search for truth in the needs of life as it is shared and lived. However, interpretations of Dewey after the linguistic turn have either obscured or rejected the considerable role that he gives to the non-discursive dimension of experience. In Dewey and the Aesthetic Unconscious: The Vital Depths of Experience, Bethany Henning argues that much classical American philosophy implicitly recognizes an unconscious dimension of mind that is distinct from Freud’s theory. Although the unconscious that emerges within American thought has never been treated systematically, it found its fullest expression in Dewey’s work, particularly in his theory of aesthetic experience. This dimension of mind illuminates the continuity between nature and culture, and it provides us with an account of why artwork is often successful at communicating meanings from the ecological and intimate dimensions of life, where discourse often fails. If the relationship between the human and the organic world has emerged as the definitive question of twenty-first century life, then the aesthetic unconscious stands as a resource for our ecological and intimate well-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does much to disple the old canard that John Dewey was guilty of "scientism" and a reverent worship of technological progress. Indeed, Dewey predated the Frankfurt school in his warnings about the dangers inherent in a machine culture. With new advances come new problems, and these can only be dealt with through an instrumentalist approach. Dewey also argued that we have no guarantee of success. Natural events can terminate human life and human greed, laziness, or error could have the same result.
