Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians who refused to bow the knee to the state church have always been persecuted by state churches. We who call ourselves Baptist need to know what we believe and why. History is an important window into what God used to form His people. This book is intended to provide a look back into the history of the Baptists, both in England and the USA. We read of persecution by state church rulers who fled the persecution of the state church in Europe. John Clarke's Ill News From New England recounts the tribulations faced by Baptists in the New World during the 17th century. It's not always been peaceful in this country for people who value peace with God over peace with men.John Clarke (October 1609 - 20 April 1676) was a physician, Baptist minister, co-founder of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, author of its influential charter, and a leading advocate of religious freedom in America.

Book John Clarke and His Legacies

Download or read book John Clarke and His Legacies written by Sydney James and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Clarke and His Legacies is the first full-length biography of John Clarke (1609&–76), a principal founder of colonial Rhode Island. Although Roger Williams usually gets most of the attention, Sydney James shows that Clarke made a lasting contribution to the colony&—perhaps more so than Williams. Williams was the first Baptist minister in America, but he left his church after a very short time. And although Williams won the first charter for Rhode Island, the charter soon had to be replaced. Clarke, however, founded the first Baptist church in Newport, where he continued to contribute to the Baptist community. And in 1663 he procured the royal charter that would remain the foundation of government in Rhode Island until 1842. This inquiry into Clarke's life engages a variety of intriguing topics. It surveys a formative stage in American Baptist history, one that spurned dependency upon government more thoroughly than any part of the United States does today. Through the experience of Clark, we see pioneering American religious volunteerism, problems of church-state relations, and the peculiar nature of colonial relations with the parent country.

Book Shaping North America 3 volumes

Download or read book Shaping North America 3 volumes written by James E. Seelye Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 1167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating multivolume set provides a unique resource for learning about early American history, including thematic essays, topical entries, and an invaluable collection of primary source documents. In 1783, just months after the United States achieved independence from Great Britain, General George Washington was compelled to convince his officers not to undertake a military coup of the Congress of Confederation. Had the planned mutinous coup of the Newburgh Conspiracy gone forward, the American experiment may have ended before it even began. The pre-colonial and colonial periods of early American history are filled with accounts of key events that established the course of our nation's development. This expansive three-volume set provides entries on a wide variety of topics and themes in early American history to elucidate how the United States came to be. Written in straightforward language, the encyclopedic entries on social, political, cultural, and military subjects from the pre-Columbian period through the creation of the Constitution (roughly 1400–1790) will be useful for anyone wishing to deeply investigate the who, what, where, when, and why of early America. Additionally, the breadth of primary documents—including personal diaries, letters, poems, images, treaties, and other legal documents—provides readers with firsthand sources written by the men and women who shaped American history, both the famous and the less well known. Each of the three volumes also presents thematic essays on highlighted topics to fully place the individual entries within their proper historical context and heighten readers' comprehension.
