They were tilliam Lowndes, Langdon Cheves, and John C. Calhoun. These remarkable and bril liant statesmen were ardently patriotic, and, like Henry Clay, represented the national tendencies of the younger element of the Republican party of the South and West. REPUBLICAN A1ID NATIONALIST. In Hocember, l8ll, three young men from South Carolina took their seats in the House of Representatives for the first time. They were Tilliam Lowndes, lang&on Cheves, and John C. Calhoun. These remarkable and brilliant statesmen were ardently patriotic, and, like Henry Clay, represented the national tendencies of the younger element of the Republican fiarty of the South and '.Vest. All were advocates of the war of 18l2, and vigorously upheld the measures designed to carry it to a successful conclusion. The close of the war revealed the Federalist party weak and becoming weaker; the Republican party strong and growing stronger. The latter had moreover, been converted, in a great measure, to centralization and loose construction. Calhoun was one of those whom the wave of nationalization, that swept the country, bere along on its very crest. T7ith sincerity and enthusiasm, he supported all the national measures now brought forward in congress, just as he had favored the war with England and its vigorous prosecution. His advocacy of the national bank, of internal improvements by the general government, and of a protective tariff is not so significant as the ultimate object which he so ardently desired to secure by the passage of these measures. This underlying purpose was nothing less than the strengthening of the bond of union, and all the ties that attached the people to the central givernment. The great end he had in view was to produce a sentiment in favor of the Union so strong that it could never be broken. When speaking in favor of the tariff bill in l8l6, he argued that it was calculated to bind together more elosely the widely-spread Republic; that it would increase the mutual dependence and...

Book Life of John C Calhoun

Download or read book Life of John C Calhoun written by R. M. T. Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of John C. Calhoun: Presenting a Condensed History of Political Events From 1811 to 1843 Including the Period from his Infancy until he entered Congress. The object of the present memoir of john caldwell calhoun is not to present a biography of the man, but to describe him as a statesman; to draw and to develop his character in that capacity, and to trace his emi nent public services during a long career in one of the most eventful pe riods of human history. To dwell on a character like his, distinguished by every trait that should win esteem and command admiration, would be to the biographer a most attractive labour; but the pleasure of depicting a private life elevated by spotless purity and integrity, and a severe sim plicity of tastes and habits, must be relinquished - except so far as occa sioual reference to his early history may become necessary - for the high er duty of portraying his intellectual features, and of explaining his mo tives and conduct as a public man. It is not our aim to commend him to public affection, Or to enlist popular sympathy in his behalf, but rather to show to the world, not for his sake, but for its own instruction, the deep influence of this master-mind upon the great political events of his age. A fair and impartial review of the career of this eminent statesman in connexion with public affairs, is necessary to a thorough understanding of the course of our own government for nearly two thirds of its existence. Such a review, it is believed, would be no unacceptable offering at the present time. Throughout the whole period from 1811 up to the pres ent time he has served the Union in the various capacities of Represent ative, Secretary of War, Vice-president, and Senator. He has taken a prominent and influential part in all the great questions which have arisen during that long interval; and, although he has asked a release from farther public service, it is not impossible that he may be destined to close his career as a statesman in another and a higher station. With faculties unclouded, with physical powers unimpaired, with a judgment matured by observation and experience, with an intrepidity untamed by the many trying vicissitudes of his extraordinary life, and with an activity whose energies are unabated by time, it is probable that. The American people will not dispense with such services as he might render in the highest sphere open to American statesmen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches of John C. Calhoun: Delivered in the House of Representatives, and in the Senate of the United States I hold that there is a distinction in this respect between a state of peace and war. In the latter, the right of with holding the supplies ought ever to be held subordinate to the energetic and successful prosecution of the war. I go fur ther, and regard the withholding of supplies, With a'view of forcing the country into a dishonorable peace, as not only to be, what it had been called, moral treason, but very little short of actual treason itself. It was this which rendered the attempt to withhold supplies by the Federal party, dur ing the late war, so odious. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John C. Calhoun and the Secession Movement of 1850 It has been truly said that state rights apart from sectionalism have never been a serious hinderance to the progress of national unity; on the other hand sectionalism is by its very nature incipient dis union, as its ultimate goal is political independence for a group of states.ll Prior to the Civil War there were numerous instances of the assertion of state rights. Almost every state in the Union at some time declared its own sovereignty but on other occasions denounced as treasonable similar declarations by other states. Only, however, when the doctrine of state rights has been laid hold of as an effective Shibboleth by some particular section of the country, to give an appearance of legality to its opposition to measures of the federal government, has the doctrine threatened the integrity of the Union. Book John C Calhoun s Theory of Republicanism

Download or read book John C Calhoun s Theory of Republicanism written by John G. Grove and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John C. Calhoun (1782–1850), the South Carolinian who served as a congressman, a senator, and the seventh vice president of the United States, is best known for his role in southern resistance to abolition and his doctrine of state nullification. But he was also an accomplished political thinker, articulating the theory of the “concurrent majority.” This theory, John G. Grove contends, is a rare example of American political thought resting on classical assumptions about human nature and political life. By tracing Calhoun's ideas over the course of his political career, Grove unravels the relationship between the theory of the concurrent majority and civic harmony, constitutional reform, and American slavery. In doing so, Grove distinguishes Calhoun's political philosophy from his practical, political commitment to states' rights and slavery, and identifies his ideas as a genuinely classical form of republicanism that focuses on the political nature of mankind, public virtue, and civic harmony. Man was a social creature, Calhoun argued, and the role of government was to maximize society's ability to thrive. The requirements of social harmony, not abstract individual rights, were therefore the foundation of political order. Hence the concurrent majority permitted the unique elements in any given society to pursue their interests as long as these did not damage the whole society; it forced rulers to act in the interest of the whole. John C. Calhoun's Theory of Republicanism offers a close analysis of the historical development of this idea from a basic, inherited republican ideology into a well-defined political theory. In the process, this book demonstrates that Calhoun's infamous defense of American slavery, while unwavering, was intellectually shallow and, in some ways, contradicted his highly developed political theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John C. Calhoun: Being a View of the Principal Events of His Career and an Account I desire to die in the discharge of my duty; I have an unshaken reliance upon the providence of God. - Calhoun. It is a serious misfortune to run half a century ahead of the knowledge of the day; and if a man is bent on doing this, he should make up his mind to meet the consequences, and count the cost. Men of moderate intellect disapprove, the timid are alarmed, foes are excited, and friends stand aloof. A man, so determined to abide by Truth, through evil report and good report, must be content to brave the pity of some, the sneers of others, and the raucorous hatred of all who live and prosper by existing error. - Thomas Cooper.
