REPUBLICAN A1ID NATIONALIST. In Hocember, l8ll, three young men from South Carolina took their seats in the House of Representatives for the first time. They were Tilliam Lowndes, lang&on Cheves, and John C. Calhoun. These remarkable and brilliant statesmen were ardently patriotic, and, like Henry Clay, represented the national tendencies of the younger element of the Republican fiarty of the South and '.Vest. All were advocates of the war of 18l2, and vigorously upheld the measures designed to carry it to a successful conclusion. The close of the war revealed the Federalist party weak and becoming weaker; the Republican party strong and growing stronger. The latter had moreover, been converted, in a great measure, to centralization and loose construction. Calhoun was one of those whom the wave of nationalization, that swept the country, bere along on its very crest. T7ith sincerity and enthusiasm, he supported all the national measures now brought forward in congress, just as he had favored the war with England and its vigorous prosecution. His advocacy of the national bank, of internal improvements by the general government, and of a protective tariff is not so significant as the ultimate object which he so ardently desired to secure by the passage of these measures. This underlying purpose was nothing less than the strengthening of the bond of union, and all the ties that attached the people to the central givernment. The great end he had in view was to produce a sentiment in favor of the Union so strong that it could never be broken. When speaking in favor of the tariff bill in l8l6, he argued that it was calculated to bind together more elosely the widely-spread Republic; that it would increase the mutual dependence and...

Book John C Calhoun

Download or read book John C Calhoun written by Hermann Von Holst and published by . This book was released on 1890 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman von Holst's John C. Calhoun is a biography of the divisive and influential Southern statesmen who dominated much of the American political discourse in the years prior to the Civil War. The work covers the subject's life from his youth, through his introduction to American politics, to his tenure as Vice President under Andrew Jackson and in the U.S. Senate as the "Great Nullifier". The work concludes with his participation in the debates about the Mexican War and its consequences. Throughout the work, von Holst is critical of Calhoun as the Southern statesmen schemed for the dissolution of the Union. As was the case with American political history during the period, the issue of slavery dominates the biography. Von Holst presents Calhoun as a proud defender of the institution and by extension a defender of state sovereignty and the right to secede. He takes Calhoun at his word, reprinting several of the Southerner's speeches in which he states the absolute necessity of protecting Southern "Liberty", even at the cost of disunion.

Book excerpt: John Caldwell Calhoun March 18, 1782 - March 31, 1850) was an American statesman and political theorist from South Carolina, and the seventh Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832. He is remembered for strongly defending slavery and for advancing the concept of minority rights in politics, which he did in the context of defending white Southern interests from perceived Northern threats. He began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. By the late 1820s, his views reversed and he became a leading proponent of states' rights, limited government, nullification, and opposition to high tariffs-he saw Northern acceptance of these policies as the only way to keep the South in the Union. His beliefs and warnings heavily influenced the South's secession from the Union in 1860-1861.
