Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Brown Soldier of Fortune: A Critique Reporting to his associate that he would not write the sketch, he said that he could find but little in the record of his life which gave him creditable distinction, and that he did not wish to write the discreditable things about him which it contained. Later he gathered up the threads of Brown's life and has woven them, conscientiously, into the web of history. The story reveals little which is creditable to Brown or worthy of emulation and much that is abhorrent. But he indulges the hope that he has made it clear that his conceptions of the character have not been inspired by prejudice, blind or otherwise, for he has examined the records in the case; an examination which has led him through all the existing testimony concern ing Brown; except. That he has not explored the writings which have been put forth bv those who have sought, viciously, to attack Brown's character. The opinions therefore which he has set forth are convictions resulting from serious investiga tion and thought. In 1859 the character was impressed upon his attention in a personal way. An older brother, Joseph E. Wilson, was a member of the company of marines that made the assault on the engine-house at Harper's Ferry, on the morning of October 18th; and from him he heard the story of the fight, and about Brown.

Book John Brown

Download or read book John Brown written by Alfred S. Roe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Brown: A Retrospect Nearly two thousand years ago, at the hour of noon, a motley throng of people might have been seen pouring forth from the gates of a far Eastern city and moving towards a hill called Calvary. Amidst soldiers and civilians, both friends and foes, the central figure is that of a man scarcely more than thirty years of age. He has all the attributes, in form and features, of true manliness. A disinterested judge has just declared that he finds nothing amiss in him but the rabble cry out, all the more, crucify him. While ardently loved by a devoted few in that tumultuous crowd, he is, to all the rest, an object of severest scorn, the butt of ribald jest. Wearing his crown of thorns, he is made to bear, till he faints un der his burden, the very instrument of his torture. His Roman executioners, giving to him the punishment accorded to thieves and robbers, have imposed upon him the most ignominious fate possible, - death upon the cross. A century before, Cicero had said It is an outrage to bind a Roman citizen to scourge him is an atrocious crime to put him to death is almost parricide but to crucify him - what shall I call it? Book excerpt: John Brown Gordon’s career of prominent public service spanned four of America’s most turbulent decades. Born in Upson County, Georgia, in 1832, Gordon practiced law in Atlanta and, in the years immediately preceding the Civil War, developed coal mines in northwest Georgia. In 1861, he responded to the Confederate call to arms by raising a company of volunteers. His subsequent rise from captain to corps commander was unmatched in the Army of Northern Virginia. He emerged from the Civil War as one of the South’s most respected generals, and the reputation that Gordon earned while “wearing the gray” significantly influenced almost every aspect of his life during the next forty years. After the Civil War, Gordon drifted into politics. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2873 and quickly established himself as a spokesman for Georgia and for the South as a whole. He eloquently defended the integrity of southern whites while fighting to restore home rule. In addition to safeguarding and promoting southern interests, Gordon strove to replace sectional antagonisms with a commitment to building a stronger, more unified nation. His efforts throughout his post-war career contributed significantly to the process of national reconciliation. Even in the wake of charges of corruption that surrounded his resignation from the Senate in 1880, Gordon remained an extremely popular man in the South. He engaged in a variety of speculative business ventures, served as governor of Georgia, and returned for another term in the Senate before he retired permanently from public office. He devoted his final years to lecture tours, to serving as commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans, and to writing his memoirs, Reminiscences of the Civil War. Utilizing newspapers, scattered manuscript collections, and official records, Ralph Eckert presents a critical biography of Gordon that analyzes all areas of his career. As one of the few Confederates to command a corps without the benefit of previous military training, Gordon provides a fascinating example of a Civil War citizen-soldier. Equally interesting, however, were Gordon’s postwar activities and the often conflicting responsibilities that he felt as a southerner and an American. The contributions that Gordon made to Georgia, to the South, and to the United States during this period are arguably as important as any of his career.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. John Brown: A Biography and a Criticism I have sometimes been inclined to think that Dr. John Brown had thrown so much of his own beautiful character into his writings that any other memorial of him was not only superfluous, but might even be in danger of impairing the true im pression of him which had already been sufficiently given by himself. And it is therefore with some hesitation that I venture upon the attempt to record what an intimacy of over fifty years may enable me to recall of a very remarkable and a very attractive personality. Something, however, as it seems to me, is still wanted to define the exact character and value of his literary work. One generally hears him spoken of as the author of Rab and. His right and his might, at the close of the account, were one and the same. He has fought with all his might, and in exact proportion to all his right he has prevailed. His very death is no victory over him. He dies indeed; but his work lives, very truly lives. A heroic Wallace, quartered on the scaffold, cannot hinder that Scotland become, one day, a part of England: but he does hinder that it become, on unfair terms, a part of it; commands still, as with a god's voice, from his old Valhalla and Temple of the Brave, that there be a just real union as of brother and brother, not a false and merely semblant one as of slave and master.
