Book excerpt: His most recent study is of Johann Kilian the religious leader of the Texas Wends who generally has been identified as the symbol of that community. As a university graduate, Kilian was by far the most educated member of the group and many of his letters and documents have been preserved. He accepted the call of the Wendish leaders to become the pastor of the congregation which would provide the cohesion for the community in Texas. This study is the examination of his life which led up to the call and then to his life in Texas. In spite of his prominence, his will did not always prevail, and he was subject to the democratically arrived-at decisions of the congregational assembly. Nevertheless, his biography serves not only as the study of an important person, but it also parallels the history of the Wendish community in Texas.

As most researchers know, the Bremen lists were destroyed during the fire storm of that city during World War II. In the case of this work, however, Mr. Smith was able to recover fourteen Bremen lists because they had been reprinted in the obscure weekly newspaper from Rudolstadt, Thuringia, entitled the "Allgemeine Auswanderungs-Zeitung" (which can be found in the rare-book collection at Yale University). The compiler has transcribed the names of all persons bound for America from each of the fourteen lists. The emigrants, who are arranged alphabetically, are identified by place of origin and sometimes by the number of persons in the passenger's family or the names of traveling companions.

In an attempt to explain how such violence could take place in a prosperous and forward-looking community, the author first examines the growth of Thorndale as a small agricultural town on the railroad and then connects Thorndales geographical setting in central Texas with its tradition of violence. This particular lynching was unusual in that it took place at night, thereby complicating apprehension of the members of the mob. However, as a result of intervention by the governor, four men were arrested for the crime and three were tried. The lynching was also unusual because the victim was of Mexican heritage thereby inciting the Mexican community to voice its outrage and demand justice. The nature of its reaction testifies to the political awareness of the Mexican minority and also provides an insight into its perception of Anglo society.

Book excerpt: Fritz and Annie Lippe Family--German Cotton Farmers in Early 1900s Texas describes the childhood of Fritz and Annie beside the Brazos River in east Texas, their families' move west, their courtship and marriage, and the rearing of their eleven children on rented farms. In some years, the cotton crop was profitable. In other years, drought, boll weevils, or floods destroyed the crop. The children missed the first few weeks of school in the fall because picking the cotton took priority over education. The family raised most of their own food--vegetables from the garden; hogs for meat, lard, and soap; cattle for meat, milk and butter; and chickens for meat and eggs. They grew corn, grinding it into cornmeal to make bread. Money from the cotton sale was used to buy the few items that were not made or grown, such as coffee, sugar, and farm tools. Their many narrow escapes from death due to accidents, injuries, and illnesses are described here. It is amazing that all of the children lived to adulthood. Annie almost died after giving birth to one of the younger children, but she recovered and lived to the age of 103. Every Lippe son and son-in-law served in the military, some of them during World War II, some in combat. All returned safely. Several grandchildren and their spouses also served. Eight of the eleven children and the wives of two deceased sons contributed photographs and stories of life on the family farms. The author inherited many letters and photos from her mother, who was Fritz and Annie's eldest daughter. The book also contains stories of Fritz and Annie's children as adults. They all became hardworking solid citizens and remained true to the faith in God instilled in them by their parents.
