Book excerpt: The major significance of the German naturalist-physician Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752–1840) as a topic of historical study is the fact that he was one of the first anthropologists to investigate humankind as part of natural history. Moreover, Blumenbach was, and continues to be, a central figure in debates about race and racism. How exactly did Blumenbach define race and races? What were his scientific criteria? And which cultural values did he bring to bear on his scheme? Little historical work has been done on Blumenbach’s fundamental, influential race work. From his own time till today, several different pronouncements have been made by either followers or opponents, some accusing Blumenbach of being the fountainhead of scientific racism. By contrast, across early nineteenth-century Europe, not least in France, Blumenbach was lionized as an anti-racist whose work supported the unity of humankind and the abolition of slavery. This collection of essays considers how, with Blumenbach and those around him, the study of natural history and, by extension, that of science came to dominate the Western discourse of race.

Seine lange Lebensspanne wirkte als Brücke zwischen der Biologie Carl von Linnés und der Biologie Charles Darwins. Die vorliegende Bibliographie dokumentiert und erschließt das wissenschaftliche Werk Blumenbachs, das von entscheidender Bedeutung für unser Verständnis der Wissenschaftskultur Europas im späten 18. und frühen 19. So stellt er im ersten Teil seines Werkes Schriften zusammen, die von der Methodik der Naturgeschichte über die Naturgeschichte der Erde und die Zwecke der Schöpfung bis zur Naturgeschichte des Menschen reichen, während der zweite Teil als Fortsetzung und Prüfstein dieser theoretischen, methodischen und inhaltlichen Erträge besteht. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird nicht nur ein Reprint dieser Schriften vorgelegt, sondern auch eine Darstellung und Kontextualisierung des Werkes und seiner Wirkung. Über zwei Jahrhunderte nach der Erstveröffentlichung wird Blumenbach die längst überfällige Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt und ein verdienter Platz in der Wissenschaftskultur des 19. Jahrhunderts zugesprochen. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752–1840) is most famous for his triptych "De generis humani varietate nativa", "Handbuch der Naturgeschichte" and "Über den Bildungstrieb". In his on a first glance rather inconspicuous work "Beyträge zur Naturgeschichte" Blumenbach improves and develops the concepts and insights about natural history contained in the works listed above und subjects them to an open, theoretically substantial and methodologically disciplined empirical research. In the first part of his work he compiles papers reaching from the methodology of natural history to the natural history of Planet Earth, the purposes of Creation and the natural history of mankind, while the second part serves as continuation and touchstone of these theoretical, methodological and textual proceeds. This work includes not only the reprints of Blumenbach’s papers, but also a presentation and contextualization of the work as a whole and its influence. Over two centuries after its first publication the "Beyträge" finally receive the attention and place in the scientific culture of the 19th century that they so well deserve.
