Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behold the cormorant: silent, still, cruciform, and brooding; flashing, soaring, quick as a snake. Evolution has crafted the only creature on Earth that can migrate the length of a continent, dive and hunt deep underwater, perch comfortably on a branch or a wire, walk on land, climb up cliff faces, feed on thousands of different species, and live beside both fresh and salt water in a vast global range of temperatures and altitudes, often in close proximity to man. Long a symbol of gluttony, greed, bad luck, and evil, the cormorant has led a troubled existence in human history, myth, and literature. The birds have been prized as a source of mineral wealth in Peru, hunted to extinction in the Arctic, trained by the Japanese to catch fish, demonized by Milton in Paradise Lost, and reviled, despised, and exterminated by sport and commercial fishermen from Israel to Indianapolis, Toronto to Tierra del Fuego. In The DevilÕs Cormorant, Richard King takes us back in time and around the world to show us the history, nature, ecology, and economy of the worldÕs most misunderstood waterfowl.

Birds – The Inside Story offers an absorbing insight into the lives of southern African birds, exploring a range of interesting topics that include: • The mechanisms of flight – did you know that albatrosses can fly thousands of kilometres without flapping their wings? • Intricate courtship rituals – did you know that some males offer females ‘nuptial gifts’ of food to strengthen the pair bond? • Nests and nest building – did you know that Sociable Weavers build nest ‘mansions’ that can accommodate up to 500 birds at one time? • Ingenious strategies for survival – did you know that African Jacana chicks hide from predators by submerging themselves in water, leaving only their bills sticking out? • The mysteries of migration – find out how birds navigate using the sun, the stars and the magnetic field of the Earth. Birds – The Inside Story will tell you more about these and many other fascinating aspects of the avian world. Richly illustrated with colour photographs and finely detailed illustrations that bring the subject to life, this book is bound to captivate bird enthusiasts of all ages.

Book Shaping Natural History and Settler Society

Download or read book Shaping Natural History and Settler Society written by Tanja Hammel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life and work of Mary Elizabeth Barber, a British-born settler scientist who lived in the Cape during the nineteenth century. It provides a lens into a range of subjects within the history of knowledge and science, gender and social history, postcolonial, critical heritage and archival studies. The book examines the international importance of the life and works of a marginalized scientist, the instrumentalisation of science to settlers' political concerns and reveals the pivotal but largely silenced contribution of indigenous African experts. Including a variety of material, visual and textual sources, this study explores how these artefacts are archived and displayed in museums and critically analyses their content and silences. The book traces Barber’s legacy across three continents in collections and archives, offering insights into the politics of memory and history-making. At the same time, it forges a nuanced argument, incorporating study of the North and South, the history of science and social history, and the past and the present.

Book An Entirely Different World Russian Visitors to the Cape 1797 1870

Download or read book An Entirely Different World Russian Visitors to the Cape 1797 1870 written by Boris Gorelik and published by Van Riebeeck Society for the Publication of Southern African Historical Documents. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian view of the Cape as represented in this volume may be unique. During the period in question, Russia had no cultural, political or economic ties with South Africa. Russians saw the Cape only as a convenient stopover en route to the Far East, to their country’s distant domains that could not be reached by sea otherwise. The Cape was one of the ‘exotic’ lands they would visit on such journeys, their first and only introduction to the African continent. Although amazed and perplexed by the ‘entirely different world’ they found here, Russian travellers would often draw unexpected parallels between life in their motherland and the realities of the Cape Colony. The selections include memoirs of such important Russian personalities as Yuri Lisyansky, Vasily Golovnin, Ivan Goncharov and Konstantin Posyet. Most of the texts appear in English for the first time.

Book The Birdman of Koshkonong

Download or read book The Birdman of Koshkonong written by Martha Bergland and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thure Kumlien was one of Wisconsin’s earliest Swedish settlers and an accomplished ornithologist, botanist, and naturalist in the mid-1800s, though his name is not well known today. He settled on the shore of Lake Koshkonong in 1843 and soon began sending bird specimens to museums and collectors in Europe and the eastern United States, including the Smithsonian. Later, he prepared natural history exhibits for the newly established University of Wisconsin and became the first curator and third employee of the new Milwaukee Public Museum. For all of his achievements, Kumlien never gained the widespread notoriety of Wisconsin naturalists John Muir, Increase Lapham, or Aldo Leopold. Kumlien did his work behind the scenes, content to spend his days in the marshes and swamps rather than in the public eye. He once wrote that he was not “cut out for pretensions and show in the world.” Yet, his detailed observations of Wisconsin’s natural world—including the impact of early agriculture on the environment—were hugely important to the fields of ornithology and botany. As this carefully researched and lovingly rendered biography proves, Thure Kumlien deserves to be remembered as one of Wisconsin’s most influential naturalists.
