Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsomely illustrated book is the first monograph devoted to the work of Joel Perlman (b. 1943), an acclaimed sculptor in steel and bronze, whose works are represented in the permanent collections of America's top museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Perlman's best works from the 1970s to the present day — from the austerely abstract Chevy Short (For Jeannie Day), shown at the 1973 Whitney Biennial, to the lyrical Sky Spirit, a monumental commission completed in 2004 — are depicted in here in stunning full-page photographs, most in full color. All readers with an interest in contemporary sculpture will appreciate not only the book's striking illustrations but also its thoughtfully written text, which relates Perlman's art to his life. Author Philip F. Palmedo, drawing on extensive interviews with his subject and his subject's colleagues, engagingly describes how each chapter of Perlman's life — from his early days of teaching alongside Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski in the Bennington College art department to his struggle, ultimately very successful, to establish himself in SoHo's vibrant 1970s art scene — served to strengthen his commitment to his own abstract, Modernist aesthetic. This thoughtful narrative, which seamlessly synthesizes Perlman's intimate art-world anecdotes and Palmedo's own keen critical observations, is beautifully complemented by an insightful foreword by renowned art dealer André Emmerich, whose gallery represented Perlman for twenty years.

Sam soon discovers a cave containing a nest of unknown origin, and upon showing her dad, it’s thought to be evidence of Bigfoot. Charlie dismisses the discovery and spirals out of control, insisting the evidence points is extraterrestrial. In his greed, he sabotages Jack's work, but not before Sam discovers that neither Bigfoot or aliens are responsible for the nest. What lies inside makes Sam a believer in all things magic. Charlie, upon learning the truth about the cave and nest, does everything in his power to capture the elusive creature named Ash, but is met with resistance by the rest of the group. Book The Book of Demra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joel Henderson
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-11-03
  • ISBN : 9781662461019
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book The Book of Demra written by Joel Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The description of a unique series of true-life experiences of a man in the throngs of a life between desperation and exuberance points to the work of fate in providing his transformation. Living his selfish, hedonistic life, the birth of his daughter provides the path of his transformation. The doctors say his daughter should be institutionalized, that she would never know anything or be able to do anything. She communicates to him that his path is to be her arms, legs, voice, and shelter as her time on earth proceeds. He sees for the first time why he was put on earth and changes his life to provide her the help she requires. The book describes his life in his desperate world of drugs, crime, and death and moves to his life after he is transformed. It shows his movement through the educational world until he completes his PhD and until he establishes his place as a professor in a California university. All the while, his daughter is still providing the direction, and in retrospect, he believes she is controlling the events that will provide her a place on earth. The description of these unique events and the adventures that are unveiled led down predetermined paths in a complicated life. The events that are depicted, while they are happening, are just living life, but in retrospect, it is a pattern of events that make it appear that there is fate or predetermination that is the cause. Looking back, it seems that his daughter is moving him and those around her to satisfy her needs. This point of view is opposite of that generally seen where a person who is disabled is being helped by others. In this story, the person who is disabled is shown to be producing what she needs to survive on earth because it is clear where she came from was a different space. She has her spiritual being that is now being housed on earth, and she has to navigate earthly realities while preserving the spiritual presence that she brought to earth. The true stories that provide the basis for showing directions of paths of lives are amazing and, at times, unbelievable, but they are true.

Download or read book Visionary Journeys written by Xioafei Tian and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the parallel and yet profoundly different ways of seeing the outside world and engaging with the foreign at two important moments of dislocation in Chinese history, namely, the early medieval period commonly known as the Northern and Southern Dynasties (317–589 CE), and the nineteenth century. Xiaofei Tian juxtaposes literary, historical, and religious materials from these two periods in comparative study, bringing them together in their unprecedentedly large-scale interactions, and their intense fascination, with foreign cultures. By examining various cultural forms of representation from the two periods, Tian attempts to sort out modes of seeing the world that inform these writings. These modes, Tian argues, were established in early medieval times and resurfaced, in permutations and metamorphoses, in nineteenth-century writings on encountering the Other. This book is for readers who are interested not only in early medieval or nineteenth-century China but also in issues of representation, travel, visualization, and modernity.
