Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I did come to Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1947. My mother woke my brother and me one night and said, "We are running far away from your father." He was very abusive and would beat her black and blue many times. Mom was afraid that he would kill her one day when he would come home drunk. She saved us all. To all you boys, please remember that a good man will never strike a woman or hurt her in any way! Many of these experiences are taken from my early years in Daytona and Ormond Beach. Harold is my lifelong friend. Susan is my cousin. She never had any of these experiences. I just think she is a great girl, and I wanted to include her as a main character to share in this story. Please, I do not recommend that any of my young readers try to catch snakes or alligators. These are wild things. To my older readers, what are you thinking? They are extremely dangerous and can and will kill you. Do not do it! Growing up in Florida was great. We had no air-conditioning and no TV. We had just a radio, and the mystery stories came on at night. That was our only entertainment. The movies cost nine cents, popcorn was ten cents, and sodas were five cents; and you could earn extra money by collecting cola bottles for the two- cent deposit. We only wore shoes when we went to church and school.

Download or read book From the River written by Joe Booth and published by Class Five Mind. This book was released on 2020-07-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the River is written from an insider's perspective to address the issue of substance abuse among adventure athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. While there are numerous books written about recovery, very few that speak directly to the heart and soul of adventure athletes. From the River fills this gap. Outdoor enthusiasts seeking inspiration and practical guidance on how to win their battles against alcohol or drug abuse will appreciate the honesty, metaphors, and advice included in this guidebook for sobriety. Using whitewater kayaking as a metaphor for life, From the River is broken up into two sections - "Section I: Class Five Mind" and "Section II: From the River." In Section I, I call upon my background in psychology, education, and my struggle with substance abuse to offer science-based, practical advice on how to break the chains of addiction by developing a mindset based on five principles that every adventure athlete can relate to - Commitment, Courage, Humility, Flow, and Resilience. In Section II, I share lessons and anecdotes from my years on the river teaching cancer survivors and blind veterans how to whitewater kayak. This section also contains detailed and thrilling accounts of overcoming my mental challenges of paddling Class V whitewater. For many of the people rushing outside to find refuge from their stressful lives, addiction continues to be an anchor holding them down. As the sober movement becomes more mainstream, outdoor enthusiasts are looking for resources that they can relate to. From the River is written for this population by one of their own. A story of recovery and redemption, this book blends neuroscience, personal stories, and practical advice to the reader who is struggling with addiction.

Book Living Life as an Adventure

Download or read book Living Life as an Adventure written by Esther Davis Lang and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The author was living in a Senior Independent Living Center in Severna Park MD, when the Covid 19 pandemic struck. Everything was locked down. She was bored. What better time to write about “what was it like back when” as her family had been urging her to do. She begins her book by inviting you to a holiday dinner, speaking to the reader, personally. Her keen sense of humor is obvious as she tells of growing up in a small town in the hills of western Maryland. It was 1924. In 1941, when attending college, WWII was raging on two fronts. She wanted to help. She spent 2 summers working at a Women’s Land Army Camp, harvesting crops. The army desperately needed Physical Therapists. Having the required biology credits, she accepted the Army’s offer for training, at an army hospital and became a Physical Therapist. She describes working with soldiers with amputated legs and peripheral nerve injuries. They were not pitied but encouraged to find humor even in such situations. She writes of her excitement and wonder as she travels to Norway, the Passion Play in Germany, the Canyons and Parks in the west. There are funny tales of tent camping with her brother and sister-in-law. She drove her “little red sable” and followed them, using a CB to communicate, (calling M & M, this is Red Sable, over) In her book Esther Davis Lang has made history interesting, funny and easy to read.

Book The River of the West The Adventures of Joe Meek The Mountain Years

Download or read book The River of the West The Adventures of Joe Meek The Mountain Years written by Frances Fuller Victor and published by Tamarack Books. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Meek is one of the West's irresistible characters dashing, devil-may-care, cheeky, irreverent, more fun than a playful grizzly cub. Unlike so many of the West's other great characters, he comes down to us not as a myth, says the editor, but as "simply a right kind of fella." It is our good luck that Joe knew how to yarn his mountain experiences truly and colorfully and with only a mite of stretching, and that he happened to cross trails with Frances Fuller Victor, who had the sense to see the worth of his tale as Joe told it, in the raw. The first of two volumes of "The River of the West" deals with Joe's years as one of the legendary mountain men, the fur trappers of the Rocky Mountains. A facsimile of the original edition published in 1870, this reissue includes the original illustrations and offers a new introduction, map, notes, bibliography, and index.

Book Bicycling with Butterflies

Download or read book Bicycling with Butterflies written by Sara Dykman and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What a wonderful idea for an adventure! Absolutely inspired, timely, and important.” —Alistair Humphreys, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and author of The Doorstep Mile and Around the World by Bike Outdoor educator and field researcher Sara Dykman made history when she became the first person to bicycle alongside monarch butterflies on their storied annual migration—a round-trip adventure that included three countries and more than 10,000 miles. Equally remarkable, she did it solo, on a bike cobbled together from used parts. Her panniers were recycled buckets. In Bicycling with Butterflies, Dykman recounts her incredible journey and the dramatic ups and downs of the nearly nine-month odyssey. We’re beside her as she navigates unmapped roads in foreign countries, checks roadside milkweed for monarch eggs, and shares her passion with eager schoolchildren, skeptical bar patrons, and unimpressed border officials. We also meet some of the ardent monarch stewards who supported her efforts, from citizen scientists and researchers to farmers and high-rise city dwellers. With both humor and humility, Dykman offers a compelling story, confirming the urgency of saving the threatened monarch migration—and the other threatened systems of nature that affect the survival of us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western medicine has not been particularly successful at getting people relief from conditions like depression, chronic pain, migraine headaches, addiction, and PTSD. Dr. Tafur helps us to understand why. I have watched people spend years in frustration and thousands of dollars consulting an army of specialists, without getting real relief from their problem. Because these and others are diseases deeply connected with the state of our emotional bodies. Too often, the Western medical approach fails to address the emotional dimension of illness. This is where traditional plant medicines, with their ability to alter consciousness and open channels of communication to our emotions, offer so much promise. The stories shared here demonstrate the astonishing-mystical, colorful, metaphysical-effects of ayahuasca and Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine. Follow Dr. Tafur through the Amazon jungle as he develops a breakthrough understanding of how psychoactive plants interact with the complex network that connects our minds and hearts to our physical anatomy. What Dr. Tafur presents here is nothing short of a paradigm shift for modern medicine, where sacred plants, used properly in ceremony, take their place as important tools in the doctor's medicine chest, offering the missing elements of emotional and spiritual healing that have eluded us for so long.
