Book excerpt: Bringing to life the musical worlds of New Zealanders both at home and out on the town, this history chronicles the evolution of popular music in New Zealand during the 20th century. From the kiwi concert parties during World War I and the arrival of jazz to the rise of swing, country, the Hawaiian sound, and then rock'n'roll, this musical investigation brings to life the people, places, and sounds of a world that has disappeared and uncovers how music from the rest of the world was shaped by Maori and Pakeha New Zealanders into a melody, rhythm, and voice that made sense on these islands.

Book Larry Brown and the Blue Collar South

Download or read book Larry Brown and the Blue Collar South written by Jean W. Cash and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-01-05 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from Robert G. Barrier, Robert Beuka, Thomas Ærvold Bjerre, Jean W. Cash, Robert Donahoo, Richard Gaughran, Gary Hawkins, Darlin' Neal, Keith Perry, Katherine Powell, John A. Staunton, and Jay Watson Larry Brown is noted for his subjects—rural life, poverty, war, and the working class—and his spare, gritty style. Brown's oeuvre spans several genres and includes acclaimed novels (Dirty Work, Joe, Father and Son, The Rabbit Factory, and A Miracle of Catfish), short story collections (Facing the Music, Big Bad Love), memoir (On Fire), and essay collections (Billy Ray's Farm). At the time of his death, Brown (1951–2004) was considered to be one of the finest exemplars of minimalist, raw writing of the contemporary South. Larry Brown and the Blue-Collar South considers the writer's full body of work, placing it in the contexts of southern literature, Mississippi writing, and literary work about the working class. Collectively, the essays explore such subjects as Brown's treatment of class politics, race and racism, the aftereffects of the Vietnam War on American culture, the evolution of the South from a plantation-based economy to a postindustrial one, and male-female relations. The role of Brown's mentors—Ellen Douglas and Barry Hannah—in shaping his work is discussed, as is Brown's connection to such writers as Harry Crews and Dorothy Allison. The volume is one of the first critical studies of a writer whose depth and influence mark him as one of the most well-regarded Mississippi authors.

Book The letter in the Pale Blue Envelope

Download or read book The letter in the Pale Blue Envelope written by Denise Cundy Borge and published by Denise Cundy Borge. This book was released on with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book goes in many different directions and explores relationships within familes and also between friends. The main character in the book is Charlotte Jameson and much of the story revolves around her. The relationship with her mother Molly went deep and when she was called upon to become her full-time Carer at the small cottage in the village of St. Gilda in Yorkshire, she never hesitated even for a moment even though it meant giving up her life in the city. She worked as a self employed translator so her work could continue. When the letter in the pale blue envelope found its way into her hands she had no way of knowing what extraordinary events and emotions would be triggered by its contents which would set her on a path out of Yorkshire and into Southern Africa. She was faced with revelations which brought about great changes in her life. Finding new worlds with their own culture, language and history in South Africa and Namibia broadened her horisons but she was ultimately drawn back to her roots in Yorkshire. Ultimately she longed for the tranquility of the Yorkshire countryside and returned to St. Gilda only to be caught up in the trauma of the grandchildren of the Hauptmanns, a German family who lived near St. Gilda. Joe, who became Charlotte's friend after a chance meeting, had left London to escape from a failed relationship. He found the tranquility of the Dales suited both himself and his companion of many years, his yellow labrador. Streak was his faithful friend who loved the freedom of rambling around the countryside. Charlotte joined them on many outings and the friendship deepened. When she told him of her impending trip to South Africa, he was filled with misgivings, breathing a sigh of relief when she came home.

Book Blue

  • Author : Joe Domanick
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-08-11

  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Blue written by Joe Domanick and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American policing is in crisis. Here, award-winning investigative journalist Joe Domanick reveals the troubled history of American policing over the past quarter century. He begins in the early 1990s with the beating of Rodney King and the L.A. riots, when the Los Angeles Police Department was caught between a corrupt and racist past and the demands of a rapidly changing urban population. Across the country, American cities faced similar challenges to law and order. In New York, William J. Bratton was spearheading the reorganization of the New York City Transit Police and later the 35,000-strong New York Police Department. His efforts resulted in a dramatic decrease in crime, yet introduced highly controversial policing strategies. In 2002, when Bratton was named the LAPD's new chief, he implemented the lessons learned in New York to change a department that previously had been impervious to reform. Blue ends in 2015 with the LAPD on its unfinished road to reform, as events in Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Ferguson, Missouri, raise alarms about the very strategies Bratton pioneered, and about aggressive racial profiling and the militarization of police departments throughout the United States. Domanick tells his story through the lives of the people who lived it. Along with Bratton, he introduces William Parker, the legendary LAPD police chief; Tom Bradley, the first black mayor of Los Angeles; and Charlie Beck, the hard-nosed ex-gang cop who replaced Bratton as LAPD chief. The result is both intimate and expansive: a gripping narrative that asks big questions about what constitutes good and bad policing and how best to prevent crime, control police abuse, and ease tensions between the police and the powerless. Blue is not only a page-turning read but an essential addition to our scholarship.--Adapted from book jacket.

Book excerpt: When 18 year old Aaron Iturra was shot to death in bed in his Eugene, Oregon home in October of 1994, the first person his grief stricken mother Janyce Iturra turned to was Mary Louise Thompson. Why? Because Thompson, herself the mother of a troubled teen, had become an active campaigner against teen gang activity and a surrogate mother to many local teens. But neighbors were horrified when police arrested this supposed model mother for setting up the hit and persuading two teens to carry out the brutal murder of the sleeping teen. Police discovered that this crusader against gangs had, in fact, been heavily involved with the Hell's Angels as a young woman and had masterminded the criminal activities of a violent local gang called the 74 Hoover Crips. In July of 1996, Thompson was sentenced to life without parole.
