Book The Jobless Future

Download or read book The Jobless Future written by Stanley Aronowitz and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jobless Future challenges beliefs in the utopian promise of a knowledge-based, high-technology economy. Reviewing a vast body of encouraging literature about the postindustrial age, Aronowitz and DiFazio conclude that neither theory, history, nor contemporary evidence warrants optimism about a technological economic order. Instead, they demonstrate the shift toward a massive displacement of employees at all levels and a large-scale degradation of the labor force. As they clearly chart a major change in the nature, scope, and amount of paid work, the authors suggest that notions of justice and the good life based on full employment must change radically as well. They close by proposing alternatives to our dying job culture that might help us sustain ourselves and our well-being in a science- and technology-based economic future. One alternative discussed is reducing the workday to fewer hours without reducing pay.

Book Jobless Citizens

Download or read book Jobless Citizens written by Marco Giugni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines patterns of political engagement of long-term unemployed youth. The authors show how unemployment affects the personal, social, and political life of young people. Focusing on the case of Geneva in Switzerland, the study shows the importance of socioeconomic, relational, psychological, and institutional resources for the political engagement of unemployed youth. The book shows specifically how the relationship between unemployment and the political engagement of unemployed youth is mediated by a number of factors: their socioeconomic status and more generally their individual background, their level of deprivation and the associated degree of subjective well-being; the social capital that unemployed youth draw from involvement in voluntary associations and interpersonal networks and relations, and the political learning stemming from interactions with welfare institutions and their perception of such interactions. Students and scholars in areas including Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Youth Studies and Social Policy will find this study of interest.

Book Jobless in Gainesville

Download or read book Jobless in Gainesville written by Rene G. Parent and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing is a conversation with life, our life. It's my hope you recognize yourself within the pages, within the story, within the conversation. I've written a letter to my niece who sweats jobless in Gainesville. I've written on parts of my life as a stay at home parent. I've written on the writing process itself. Though seasons change, what remains is our unity, the human connection, the people who people our lives. I've written on finding meaningful work and finding our place in the sun. Work uniquely defines us. Finding our ideal place to live is a luxury we give to ourselves. I've written on the writing process. Writing is a conversation, more the listening part however. Much like music, and those distant planes, life is readily available as backdrop to our writing. Still we must pause to notice. Enjoy listening along. May it be music to your ears, compelling to read, empowering to your life. My wife says it's called listening.

Book Hysteresis in Unemployment and Jobless Recoveries

Download or read book Hysteresis in Unemployment and Jobless Recoveries written by Dmitry Plotnikov and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops and estimates a general equilibrium rational expectations model with search and multiple equilibria where aggregate shocks have a permanent effect on the unemployment rate. If agents' wealth decreases, the unemployment rate increases for a potentially indefinite period. This makes unemployment rate dynamics path dependent as in Blanchard and Summers (1987). I argue that this feature explains the persistence of the unemployment rate in the U.S. after the Great Recession and over the entire postwar period.

Book A Fiscal Stimulus and Jobless Recovery

Download or read book A Fiscal Stimulus and Jobless Recovery written by Mr.Cristiano Cantore and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyse the effects of a government spending expansion in a DSGE model with Mortensen-Pissarides labour market frictions, deep habits in private and public consumption, investment adjustment costs, a constant-elasticity-of-substitution (CES) production function, and adjustments in employment both at the intensive as well as the extensive margin. The combination of deep habits and CES technology is crucial. The presence of deep habits magnifies the responses of macroeconomic variables to a fiscal stimulus, while an elasticity of substitution between capital and labour in the range of available estimates allows the model to produce a scenario compatible with the observed jobless recovery.

Book SINGLE with a kid JOBLESS AND DROWNING

Download or read book SINGLE with a kid JOBLESS AND DROWNING written by Kanimoli Ramaiah and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my life journey - the hardest part; at 40 I was a single mother who had a kid to raise, huge debts, a life to live and I was jobless. There weren't any pre set formula to fall back upon. Reality hit harder than a truck would at the speed of 130 kilometers per hour. What transpired in the subsequent 13 months have been recorded in this book. No economics class or commerce subject could have prepared one for such travails. It was a time I discovered who were my true friends and what was my strength. It would be a lie if I say I had not contemplated suicide at the lowest point during the journey. I did but I decided to fight back with all I had - I had nothing left except the fighting spirit. Hardest lessons learnt were about people who had basked in my suffering. Greatest lesson learnt was that options are aplenty around us, it is up to us to grab what we can and pull ourselves out of the abyss. I had emerged unscathed from that battle, wiser and most important of all - very shrewd. I have recorded my 13 months' journey as a guide to those women who are in similar predicament. Believe me, there are ways to raise funds and continue your life, than to fall victim to anyone who is out to take a free ride on you!
