Book Managing Human Resources

Download or read book Managing Human Resources written by Stephen Bach and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition is a comprehensive, authoritative set of essays. It is more detailed and analytical than the mainstream treatments of HRM. As in previous editions, Managing Human Resources analyses HRM, the study of work and employment, using an integrated multi-disciplinary approach. The starting point is a recognition that HRM practice and firm performance are influenced by a variety of institutional arrangements that extend beyond the firm. The consequences of HRM need to incorporate analysis of employees and other stakeholders as well as the implications for organizational performance.

Book Responding to Change in Jobcentres

Download or read book Responding to Change in Jobcentres written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-02-13 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for Work and Pensions' network of jobcentres has coped well in the face of the economic downturn but it must improve how it tracks and understands performance. In six months (between September 2008 and March 2009), Jobseeker's Allowance claimant numbers increased by two-thirds (from 0.9 million to 1.5 million). The Department relaxed requirements about the activities that jobcentre staff needed to undertake during 2008-09 and 2009-10, which meant jobcentres were able to prioritize checking eligibility for benefits and making sure claimants were paid. However, although the Department has continued to pursue efficiency, variations in case load across jobcentres suggest further gains may be possible. The Department has simplified its performance measures and now primarily targets the move by claimants away from benefits, or 'off-flow'but this gives no information about how individual jobcentres perform in supporting claimants to work. In 40 per cent of cases, the reason for moving off benefits is simply not recorded or claimants may have moved onto other benefits, been imprisoned or ceased claiming without taking up work. The Department has yet to decide how to adapt off-flow measures after the introduction of Universal Credit, which merges out-of-work and in-work benefits. The need to understand performance has been increased by the Department's move away from nationally mandated processes towards encouraging jobcentre staff to tailor support for claimants. While flexibility encourages local innovation, the Department needs to broaden its evaluation of new approaches and improve performance measures if greater flexibility is to lead to better services.

This book was released on 2005-11-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Commission published a Green Paper ("An EU approach to managing economic migration") in January 2005, setting out proposals for a common EU policy for the admission of immigrants for employment and migrant workers' rights. In light of this consultation paper, the Committee's report examines the issue of economic migration to the EU and the level at which it should be regulated, and discusses whether Member States should retain the freedom to decide on issues of economic migration independently of each other. The report is mostly concerned with migration into the EU, but also looks at some aspects of intra-EU movement; it does not consider illegal immigration or asylum issues. Issues discussed include: wider economic issues, the impact of globalisation, EU enlargement, options for control of migrant workers, the UK's position on the Commission's Green Paper, the case for a common EU policy, and the rights of migrant workers.

Download or read book Youth Unemployment and the Youth Contract written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Work and Pensions Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report comments positively on some aspects of the design of the Youth Contract. It builds on the types of interventions which have been shown to have a positive impact: increased Jobcentre Plus (JCP) adviser support; work experience placements; and apprenticeships. It also welcomes the inclusion of a new scheme for 16-17 year-olds, the large majority of whom do not receive support from JCP as they are ineligible for Jobseekers Allowance (JSA). The Committee acknowledges that the Government has sensibly focused wage incentives - the key new element of the Youth Contract - on longer term young unemployed claimants and there is an attempt to achieve sustainable job outcomes by linking wage incentives to the Work Programme payment structure, in which providers are financially incentivised to keep participants in work and off benefits in the longer term. However the Youth Contract on its own it will not be enough to address the current unacceptably high level of youth unemployment. A significant impact can only be made if all the targets are met. In particular, past experience shows that 160,000 wage incentives is a very ambitious target in the current economic climate. And 250,000 additional work experience placements for young people may also be unrealistic

Book Getting in staying in and getting on

Download or read book Getting in staying in and getting on written by Liz Sayce and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review, looking at disability employment support, and entitled "Getting in, staying in and getting on", seeks to ensure that disabled people have the opportunities and support needed to meet their employment aspirations. The focus of the review has set out a number of recommendations for employment support and the author has focused on three areas to promote this objective. (1) To set out the types of support that today's young disabled people will want in a future economy; (2) Enshrining the right to work objectives as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; (3) To make a case for cross-Government work to unlock the big enablers of employment, that is "Getting in, staying in and getting on" , which includes raising the aspirations of what disabled people can achieve. For "getting in" this should include more disabled people doing apprenticeships, work experience and work placements; for "staying in" there should be better promotion for Access to Work for retension and for "getting on" there should be greater encouragement of disabled people in setting up businesses and gaining skills for career development. The publication is divided into 5 chapters, with appendices.

Book Is Work Good for Your Health and Well being

Download or read book Is Work Good for Your Health and Well being written by Gordon Waddell and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-09-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing employment and supporting people into work are key elements of the Government's public health and welfare reform agendas. This independent review, commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions, examines scientific evidence on the health benefits of work, focusing on adults of working age and the common health problems that account for two-thirds of sickness absence and long-term incapacity. The study finds that there is a strong evidence base showing that work is generally good for physical and mental health and well-being, taking into account the nature and quality of work and its social context, and that worklessness is associated with poorer physical and mental health. Work can be therapeutic and can reverse the adverse health effects of unemployment, in relation to healthy people of working age, for many disabled people, for most people with common health problems and for social security beneficiaries.
