Book Job Specific Investment and the Cost of Dismissal Restrictions

Download or read book Job Specific Investment and the Cost of Dismissal Restrictions written by Mr.H. Takizawa and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a search and matching labor market equilibrium model, this paper quantifies lost labor productivity and consumption per worker that emerges from the restrictions on dismissals. Dismissal restrictions hamper the efficient reallocation of workers, with workers remaining longer in jobs. But the restrictions also tend to induce job-specific investments. A calibration exercise applied to Portugal suggests that the restrictions on dismissal slow the pace of worker reallocation and cause substantial losses of labor productivity and consumption. Although lower worker mobility induces job-specific investment that offsets part of the labor productivity and consumption losses, the size of this offsetting effect is, at most, modest.

Book Germany In An Interconnected World Economy

Download or read book Germany In An Interconnected World Economy written by Mr.Ashoka Mody and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany has been a central player in discussions on the future architecture of Europe, and has been called on to play a larger role in supporting global and, especially, European recovery from the financial crisis that triggered the Great Recession. This book focuses on the possible economic role of Germany and shows that the quantitative effects of a German fiscal stimulus would be small on the heavily indebted euro area periphery countries that most need the boost. The book finds that Germany itself faces a growth challenge and that efforts to raise its own growth potential are important for Germany, and that more rapid growth of domestic demand will more powerfully stimulate European economic growth through its expanded demand for imports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economic Impact Group (EIG) was created to support the work on the DCFR with insights from law and economics. It brings together a number of leading European law and economics scholars. The Group looked at the main elements of the DCFR with two questions in mind: from an economic perspective, is it sensible to harmonize private law across Europe for this specific element, and is the solution chosen in the DCFR optimal? This book presents the outcome of the work of the EIG. It deals with key issues such as the function of contract law, contract formation, good faith, non-discrimination, specific performance versus damages, standard contractual terms and consumer protection in contract law. The EIG complements the work of the drafters of the DCFR with insightful and critical assessments, based on the well-established law and economics literature.

Book Defense Acquisitions Termination Costs are Generally Not a Compelling Reason to Continue Programs or Contracts That Otherwise Warrant Ending

Download or read book Defense Acquisitions Termination Costs are Generally Not a Compelling Reason to Continue Programs or Contracts That Otherwise Warrant Ending written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's long-term fiscal imbalances will likely make DOD's 1.6 trillion planned investment in new weapon systems unsustainable. Thus, it is critical that DOD retains the flexibility to end programs and contracts when necessary and appropriate. Although the federal government generally has the legal right to terminate contracts for convenience, defense stakeholders have sometimes expressed concerns that it will cost more to terminate a contract than to complete it. To address this perception, GAO examined (1) how expected contract termination costs and other factors affect DOD decisions on whether to end programs and contracts; (2) the circumstances under which it would cost more to terminate a contract for convenience than to complete it; and (3) the options DOD has for retaining value or reducing costs, when DOD ends programs or contracts. To do this, GAO examined DOD data on terminated contracts over $100 million; reviewed laws, regulations, and guidance; and met with key DOD officials. GAO recommends that DOD review, and as needed amend, guidance on terminations across the military services and DOD agencies to ensure that termination guidance identifies the conditions under which it is appropriate to end programs or contracts, and provides knowledge needed to use terminations as an investment portfolio tool. DOD agreed.

Book The Legal and Economic Consequences of Wrongful Termination

Download or read book The Legal and Economic Consequences of Wrongful Termination written by James N. Dertouzos and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 1988 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there has been an uproar over wrongful termination litigation, the aggregate legal costs are not large, even compared with the number of involuntarily terminated employees who are not otherwise protected by collective bargaining agreements, civil service regulations, or explicit employment contracts. The direct costs may understate the effects of wrongful termination suits. The fear of such suits could prevent managers from being flexible in adjusting to business cycles, new investment opportunities, or evolving technologies. In response to wrongful termination suits, administrative costs may rise substantially. Costly procedural changes could be balanced by benefits stemming from more efficient utilization of human resources, making everyone better off.
