Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Nursing school did not adequately prepare me for this role” and “Why didn’t anyone tell me about this when I was a student?” are commonly heard complaints from new nurses during their first two “rite of passage” years following graduation. But this transition to professional practice—fraught with challenges, anxiety, triumphs, and tears—does not have to be so difficult. The Nurse Professional helps novices prepare for their transition into a “real world” role from being a student through graduation, NCLEX success, job search, first job, and beyond. It is the only book to cover all of the steps that new nurses must take to ensure a smooth transition into the professional role. The author is a nurse educator and mentor with extensive experience in recruiting and orienting nurses. Dr. Hunt is also co-founder of the Nurse Advocacy Forum, providing advocacy, support, networking, professional development, leadership, and mentoring to students and new graduate nurses. She offers sound advice regarding the most current issues facing new nurses and practical strategies for obtaining a job of one’s choice, describes steps to take well before graduation to ensure a smooth transition to professional practice, and addresses the various indicators of academic achievement that are required for employment at some nursing facilities. She also discusses the benefits of externships, internships, professional development, and networking, how to develop a winning portfolio, and how to successfully transition into professional practice. This book provides information on workplace bullying and how to deal with it; the importance of self-care, self-advocacy, and networking; writing a résumé; interview skills; and much more. “Top 10 Tips” in each chapter concisely highlight important topics. Samples of useful forms and documents are available in chapter appendices. A PowerPoint presentation and templates for role play/simulation scenarios for faculty use are also available. Key Features: • “Top 10 Tips” in chapters concisely highlight important topics • Samples of useful forms and documents are available in chapter appendices • Delivers specific, practical strategies and exercises for a successful transition and entry into practice • Written by an experienced nurse/educator and nurse mentor who has extensive experience regarding how new nurses transition into practice

Book The Many Roles of the Registered Nurse

Download or read book The Many Roles of the Registered Nurse written by Debra Gillespie and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurses are the largest population of healthcare providers practicing in both urban and remote areas across the globe. Currently, the nursing profession is in the midst of a significant shortage as aging baby boomers retire and a nursing faculty shortage forces many colleges and universities to turn away qualified applicants. As healthcare needs of the population become more complex and technologies advance, our world needs nurses now more than at any other time in history. This book provides the reader with a wide overview of the many vast roles within the nursing profession, showing that the responsibilities are complex, challenging and rewarding. It will allow the reader to understand the current job market for nurses and perhaps even persuade some to choose this rewarding profession.

Book The Effects of Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Effects of Job Satisfaction written by Regina M. Matera and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial incentives for conducting this research were the alarming amount of dissatisfaction expressed by nurses about their profession, the increase amount of turnovers in the profession of nursing and the decrease amount of people choosing nursing as a profession. It had been suggested in previous studies that flextime could influence the level of job satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of job satisfaction between full-time registered professional staff nurses who work the twelve hour shift with full time registered professional staff nurses who work the traditional eight hour shift; and to compare the levels of job satisfaction between full time registered professional staff nurses who work the day shift with full time registered professional staff nurses who work the night shift. The hypothesis used in this study were that full time registered professional staff nurses who work the twelve hour shift would have a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nurses who work the eight hour shift and full time registered professional staff nurses who work the day shift would have a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nurses who work the night shift. The level of job satisfaction was measured by scores in Brayfield and Rothe's Index of Job Satisfaction as well as turnover and sick call rates, The Index of Job Satisfaction which measures satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and has been used widely in previous studies, was distributed to forty full time registered professional nurses working in a staff capacity. Fifty percent of the participants worked the eight hour shift and fifty percent worked the twelve hour shift. Half of the population worked the day shift and half the night shift. The response rate was 100%. The hypothesis that full time registered professional staff nurses working the twelve hour shift would have a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nurses working the eight hour shift was proven null. The second hypothesis was weakly supported. Full time registered professional staff nurses working the day shift had a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nursing working the night shift but the difference was not significant at a significance level of .0S. The results of this research project are open to varying interpretations because of some discrepancies seen in the demographic data of the participants, as well as unforeseen discrepancies in external factors which may have led to skewed results.
