Landing a tenure-track position is no easy task. Achieving tenure is even more difficult. Under what policies and practices do faculty find greater clarity about tenure and experience higher levels of job satisfaction? And what makes an institution a great place to work? In 2005–2006, the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education surveyed more than 15,000 tenure-track faculty at 200 participating institutions to assess their job satisfaction. The survey was designed around five key themes for faculty satisfaction: tenure clarity, work-life balance, support for research, collegiality, and leadership. Book excerpt: The purpose of this literature review was to inform researchers of those predictive factors of job satisfaction previously identified for part-time faculty in higher education. They used the information gathered to help develop a survey instrument that was administered to 700 part-time faculty at their own institution. The results of the study, and an explanation of the technical elements of the instrumentation, became the subject of two other peer-reviewed publications. The review of the literature focused on studies from the 1990s to the present (2007), which surprisingly yielded only a few that were devoted to a study of job satisfaction for part-time faculty in higher education. It also briefly examined the theoretical constructs of two motivational theorists, Frederick Herzberg and Abraham Maslow. The most important research conducted so far on job satisfaction for part-time faculty was completed by Judith Gappa (Princeton University) and David Leslie (Florida State University) in 1993. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has also conducted a study known as the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF) every five or six years, i.e., 1988, 1993, 1999, and 2004, that includes a section for part-time faculty. This review examined three other academic studies and one on employee job satisfaction conducted by The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)--something it has done each year beginning in 2007. It became evident to the researchers, after this review of the literature, that the following factors most appeared to predict job satisfaction for part-time faculty: autonomy, teaching schedule, pay, work preference, faculty support, recognition, status, class facilities, quality of students, and job security.

Universities create and cultivate knowledge for the sake of building a modern world. The academic staff is the key resource within higher education institutions. A positive and healthy university structure results in increased academic staff's job satisfaction and better job motivation. According to this, the main purpose of this research was to investigate the possible relationship between job motivation and job satisfaction among academic staff. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and Job Motivation Questionnaire (JMQ) were administered to a sample of 100 (50 males and 50 females) university employees. The results indicated that the academic staff was highly motivated with their job. At the same time the results showed that academicians were more satisfied with their salary, co-workers, promotion, operating procedures and supervision, but dissatisfied with fringe benefits, contingent rewards, nature of work and communication. This research offers practical suggestions to the educational institutions and human resource managers on how to pay, promote, retain and maintain equity in the universities. Therefore, the objects of satisfaction differ from person to person. One more core element in satisfaction is, ‘it may not be in the external objects but depends upon personality traits’. One object may provide satisfaction to a particular person but the same object may not. Many times extremely opposite feeling can be perceived. Hence, This research have some unique objectives like : To understand different practices applied and services provided to HR and to know the extent of satisfaction in staff& its impact on their performance and to analyze growth and development of the staff on the basis of practices implemented by the college. This research concludes that Job satisfaction among teachers is ultimately impacting on student’s growth and development because a satisfied teacher can provide fruitful knowledge to the students. This study concludes that for accomplishment of institutional objective, there is need of satisfied workforce. Therefore, job satisfaction of teacher is the urge of the time. Significantly, job satisfaction and performance is very important to the continuing progress of educational institutes.
