Book excerpt: The present field investigation was designed to test the impact of the degree of inclusion in the daily activities of an organization on part-time/full-time employment status, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job involvement. The research was conducted in a hospital employing part- and full-time nurses. The hypotheses concerning differences in part-time/full-time nurses on inclusion, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job involvement were not supported. The hypotheses concerning the positive relationships of inclusion on the other variables were supported. Implications for future research were discussed.

Book Part Time Versus Full Time Work

Download or read book Part Time Versus Full Time Work written by Ronald John Burke and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing has been described as a stressful occupation with nursing staff reporting high levels of job dissatisfaction in many countries. For various reasons an interesting paradox exists; on the one hand there is a global shortage of nurses which has potential adverse effects on nursing staff job satisfaction and the quality of patient care. On the other hand, many nurses opt for working on a part time basis, which adds to the shortage issue. Some nursing staff have opted to work part-time by choice or out of necessity while some full-time nursing staff would prefer to work part-time. This research explores antecedents and factors related to the decisions of nursing staff to work part time with the intention of identifying reasons that might be addressed and result in their choosing to work full-time and reduce nursing shortages. Data were collected from 2094 nurses in Spain using anonymously completed questionnaires, of which 290 indicated they were currently working part-time. Respondents indicated how important a role in their decision to work part time was played by each of the items. Most common reasons for working part time were: caring for others, personal health issues, losing a full-time job, staying active in the profession, and exploring a new career or occupation. Factor analysis of 15 items yielded Part-time versus full-time work: The case of nurses in Spain 4 a five-factor solution: job loss, career and income benefits, personal needs (caring for others, health issues), exploring new career options, and the unavailability full-time jobs. Full-time and part-time nursing staff were then compared on a number of personal demographic and work situation characteristics, job demands, sources of support, work outcomes and indicators of psychological well-being. Generally, part-time nursing staff was younger, had fewer years of nursing-related tenure, fewer job resources, and indicated lower levels of job involvement, affective commitment and work engagement. Part time and full-time nurses were similar on levels of work and extra-work social support, burnout, psychological well-being and accident propensity. Efforts to encourage and support the transition of part-time nursing staff to full-time nursing staff are offered.

Book The Effects of Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Effects of Job Satisfaction written by Regina M. Matera and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial incentives for conducting this research were the alarming amount of dissatisfaction expressed by nurses about their profession, the increase amount of turnovers in the profession of nursing and the decrease amount of people choosing nursing as a profession. It had been suggested in previous studies that flextime could influence the level of job satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of job satisfaction between full-time registered professional staff nurses who work the twelve hour shift with full time registered professional staff nurses who work the traditional eight hour shift; and to compare the levels of job satisfaction between full time registered professional staff nurses who work the day shift with full time registered professional staff nurses who work the night shift. The hypothesis used in this study were that full time registered professional staff nurses who work the twelve hour shift would have a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nurses who work the eight hour shift and full time registered professional staff nurses who work the day shift would have a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nurses who work the night shift. The level of job satisfaction was measured by scores in Brayfield and Rothe's Index of Job Satisfaction as well as turnover and sick call rates, The Index of Job Satisfaction which measures satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and has been used widely in previous studies, was distributed to forty full time registered professional nurses working in a staff capacity. Fifty percent of the participants worked the eight hour shift and fifty percent worked the twelve hour shift. Half of the population worked the day shift and half the night shift. The response rate was 100%. The hypothesis that full time registered professional staff nurses working the twelve hour shift would have a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nurses working the eight hour shift was proven null. The second hypothesis was weakly supported. Full time registered professional staff nurses working the day shift had a higher level of job satisfaction than full time registered professional staff nursing working the night shift but the difference was not significant at a significance level of .0S. The results of this research project are open to varying interpretations because of some discrepancies seen in the demographic data of the participants, as well as unforeseen discrepancies in external factors which may have led to skewed results.
