Book Strategies for Survival

Download or read book Strategies for Survival written by William Dusinberre and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategies for Survival conveys the experience of bondage through former enslaved people's own words. The source of this landmark content is a remarkable series of interviews conducted in Virginia in 1937 by WPA workers. Most of the interviewers were themselves Black; as a result, the subjects spoke with exceptional candor. William Dusinberre explores these interviews to re-create for the modern reader enslaved people's strategies for survival within the severe constrictions bondage imposed upon their lives. Religion and escape were the chief ways of coping with the indignity of family disruption, contempt, and the harsh realities of slavery. We see great creativity and variety in such responses to oppression, but we are forced to acknowledge the dispiriting realties of enslaved existence and the limits of enslaved people's resistance and agency.

Book Transforming Post Communist Political Economies

Download or read book Transforming Post Communist Political Economies written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-03-02 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking new volume focuses on the interaction between political, social, and economic change in Central and Eastern Europe and the New Independent States. It includes a wide selection of analytic papers, thought-provoking essays by leading scholars in diverse fields, and an agenda for future research. It integrates work on the micro and macro levels of the economy and provides a broad overview of the transition process. This volume broadens the current intellectual and policy debate concerning the historic transition now taking place from a narrow concern with purely economic factors to the dynamics of political and social change. It questions the assumption that the post-communist economies are all following the same path and that they will inevitably develop into replicas of economies in the advanced industrial West. It challenges accepted thinking and promotes the utilization of new methods and perspectives.

Book Survival Strategies

Download or read book Survival Strategies written by George G. Wynne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published 1979, this is a most unusual contribution to comparative urban systems. It examines Paris and New York in terms of future prospects for each city in the face of draconian social, economic, and political changes, and takes as axiomatic that the struggles of New York and Paris are those of super cities: namely struggles to survive as world centers and not just as national metropolitan areas of worth. The volume covers such vital areas as planning for older cities like Paris and New York, problems in the internal management system of each city, the relationship between inner cities and suburbs, and issues involved in regional planning in which the two world cities provide models for their nations and the world as a whole. The work is unusual in that it not only appraises organizational issues, but sociological and architectural ones as well. Hence, the issue of blacks in New York, or Arabs in Paris, is addressed with considerable candor and insight. The relationship between substandard housing in each of the cities is examined with the clear understanding of the racial dynamics at work in each of these centers. This work gives intellectual and practical substance to Gottman's notion of megalopolis, and places in sharp comparative relief problems which all too often are seen as local and parochial in character. This volume represents the first world-cities approach to real world cities, and as such, is a pioneering effort that will be greeted with great enthusiasm by scholarly and general readers alike. The authors gathered for this effort represent leading practitioners from both France and the United States, and hence the volume is a joy to read no less than to ponder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative justice seeks to solve the problem of violence at the grassroots level, without relying on punishment, incarceration, or policing. Community-based approaches to preventing crime and repairing its damage have existed for centuries. However, in the putative atmosphere of contemporary criminal justice systems, they are often marginalized and operate under the radar. Beyond Survival puts these strategies front and center as real alternatives to today’s failed models of confinement and “correction.” In this collection, a diverse group of authors focuses on concrete and practical forms of redress and accountability, assessing existing practices and marking paths forward. They use a variety of forms—from toolkits to personal essays—to delve deeply into the “how to” of transformative justice, providing alternatives to calling the police, ways to support people having mental health crises, stories of community-based murder investigations, and much more. At the same time, they document the history of this radical movement, creating space for long-time organizers to reflect on victories, struggles, mistakes, and transformations.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Octavia Butler, here is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help to shape the futures we want. Change is constant. The world, our bodies, and our minds are in a constant state of flux. They are a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, Emergent Strategy teaches us to map and assess the swirling structures and to read them as they happen, all the better to shape that which ultimately shapes us, personally and politically. A resolutely materialist spirituality based equally on science and science fiction: a wild feminist and afro-futurist ride! adrienne maree brown, co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements, is a social justice facilitator, healer, and doula living in Detroit.

Book Economic Survival Strategies of Turkish Migrants in London

Download or read book Economic Survival Strategies of Turkish Migrants in London written by Olgu Karan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Survival Strategies of Turkish Migrants in London by Olgu KARAN is about economic survival in the Turkish and Kurdish communities of North London with some interesting comparisons to the longer established Turkish Cypriot community. It is to be welcomed that the study spans macro and micro levels. Also to be welcomed is that it eschews the idea that identity and culture is fixed and unchanging, providing some fascinating and important examples to the contrary, and that it moves beyond essentially culturalist approaches to entrepreneurship and even more so, mainstream individualist ones. Dr Karan noticed that two ethnic communities in conflictual relationships with each other in home country (Turkey) are marshalling collective resources in a very cooperative way across ethnic boundaries and forming small business ventures and thus contributing to the empowerment and upgrading of their households and communities.

Book The Working Woman s Legal Survival Guide

Download or read book The Working Woman s Legal Survival Guide written by Steven Mitchell Sack and published by Legal Strategies. This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women have special needs and job concerns. This book was written to save you money and aggravation". In the course of writing 14 other legal books, mostly dealing with labor subjects, it became clear to Steven Mitchell Sack that many workers are unable to obtain valuable legal advice and strategies at a low cost. The desire to provide such information for the people who need it most prompted him to write this practical, easy-to-follow guide for working women. Female workers enjoy a unique status in the eyes of the law. As a protected class, you cannot be discriminated against on the basis of your sex, or harassed on the job. Unfortunately, many women are not aware of their rights and how to use them effectively. This book was written to give them the edge. The author addresses specific job issues that pertain primarily and sometimes exclusively to women. It contains practical strategies in areas where women are commonly misinformed or exploited, including pregnancy, child care, discrimination, sex harassment, equal pay and overtime issues, part-time positions, and problems affecting consultants and independent contractors. The text is easy to read and includes checklists, sample letters, plus actual agreements and documents used by employment lawyers. It also contains lists of agencies, groups, and organizations to contact for additional assistance. The glossary will help you understand important legal terms and concepts.
