Book excerpt: Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Some of his breathtaking seascapes show how he was familiar with and employed similar techniques as the photograph. His paintings are also a great introduction to Spanish history. Most of his paintings of boats and the sea capture the fishermen in Valencia, who fished from the beach. He has painted several masterpieces of the returning boats being pulled to the beach. The oxen used to pull the boats are captured so strong, so life like, with so much love. He also painted the waiting fisherwomen and the children happily playing. He painted scenes from the lives of the fishermen. Sorollas paintings are extremely powerful and colorful and although he is usually labelled an impressionist, he is also often very naturalist and detailed. The reader is kindly referred to our book about Sorollas landscapes. This book is not a catalogue, the authors have put together a narrative and the reader may find some of the paintings in our other books as well.

He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Joaquín Sorolla painted the most wonderful beach scenes and fisheries scenes from his native Valencia. His picture The Return from Fishing (1894) was much admired at the Paris Salon and was acquired by the state for the Musée du Luxembourg. It indicated the direction of his mature output. A special exhibition of his works-figure subjects, landscapes and portraits-at the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris in 1906 eclipsed all his earlier successes and led to his appointment as Officer of the Legion of Honour. The show included nearly 500 works, early paintings as well as recent sun-drenched beach scenes, landscapes, and portraits, a productivity which amazed critics and was a financial triumph. Though subsequent large-scale exhibitions in Germany and London were greeted with more restraint, while in England in 1908 Sorolla met Archer Milton Huntington, who made him a member of The Hispanic Society of America in New York, and invited him to exhibit there in 1909. The exhibition comprised 356 paintings, 195 of which sold. Sorolla spent five months in America and painted more than twenty portraits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first fireboats from the late 18th century were tugboats, fitted with firefighting equipment. Modern fireboats are capable of pumping sometimes tens of thousands of gallons of water per minute and are very fast. Fireboats are used for fighting fires on docks and shore side warehouses or even wildfires as they can directly attack fires when close by. Fureboats also have an effectively unlimited supply of water available, pumping directly from below the hull. Fireboats are most usually seen by the public when welcoming a fleet or historical ships with a display of their water moving capabilities, throwing large arcs of water in every direction. We honor all service members on 4th of July and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.

Following the success of his one man exhibitions in France 1906, to a lesser degree Germany 1907, England 1908 but especially the USA 1909 portrait commissions flooded in. But even before Paris Sorolla produced a large number of portraits. Many of his most important sitters were male, but Sorolla did exquisite female portraits as well. Among his most successful portraits were those of female sitters whom he invariably imbued with an elegance and beauty that rank them alongside the portraits of his contemporaries Giovanni Boldini, Anders Zorn and John Singer Sargent.

Book Sorolla and the sea

Download or read book Sorolla and the sea written by Joaquín Sorolla and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little gem dedicated to Sorolla and the Mediterranean. Sorolla and the Sea brings together 24 works by Joaquin Sorolla, accompanied by a text by Manuel Vicent, which make up a gleaming portrait of the Mediterranean sea, as present in the painter's oeuvre as the eternal longing for one's childhood. A see that evokes play, freedom and pleasure, but also bears witness to the struggle for survival: golden oxen in the middle of the waves pulling the fishing boats, drenched sailors carrying fish crates amid the swell, fishmongers waiting in the beach with their baskets held against their hips and mustard-coloured latin-rigs of boats pulling their nets in pairs. Sorolla and the Sea is a pleasure for the senses. A book to enjoy and gift. A homage to the sea, to its light and colours, but also to the passions and struggles of the sea men and women. A little gem dedicated to Sorolla. AUTHOR: Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) is one of the most widely recognised Spanish Painters. He excelled in portraiture, landscape and painting of historical and social themes. His best known work is characterised by a skilled representation of people and landscapes under the bright sun of his homeland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new survey of the best works by the elusive and spectacular Spanish Impressionist Joaquín Sorolla. Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla’s major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla’s life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist’s previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.

The responsible bodies for operating and equipping fire departments are the German communities ("Gemeinden") and cities ("Städte"). By law, they are required to operate fire-fighting forces. In cities, this is usually performed by the Fire Prevention Bureau, one of the higher-ranking authorities. There are three kinds of firefighters in Germany: the predominant number of Germany's 1,383,730 firefighters are members of voluntary fire brigades (Freiwillige Feuerwehr), a lesser number are working in professional fire brigades and the smallest are the drafted members of a Compulsory Fire Service (Pflichtfeuerwehr), established just in a few places nationwide. Here we look at some of their flashy vehicles. We hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.

Law enforcement is as old as human society and the giving of laws itself. In ancient China, Babylon and Egypt there were special law enforcement bodies. The authors have made a similar book on American police cars and the styles are quite different between the two countries. We hope you will enjoy our selection of photos. Germany is divided into 16 political units. and we show police vehicles from all of them.
