Book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement Series Volume 20

Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement Series Volume 20 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive new volume of the retirement papers of Thomas Jefferson During the period covered by the 575 documents in this volume, Jefferson advises President James Monroe on what later becomes known as the “Monroe Doctrine.” He also approves of the Greek independence movement in correspondence with the scholar and political leader Adamantios Coray. Jefferson says that the “most dangerous blot” on the U.S. Constitution is the provision under which a vote by the states in the House of Representatives decides elections not settled by the Electoral College. With his allies in Virginia’s General Assembly, he succeeds in converting the University of Virginia’s loans from the state Literary Fund into an outright grant and obtains an additional $50,000 for books and scientific instruments. He seeks advice on regulating and equipping the institution, helps to obtain its architectural capitals, and designs its gymnasia. Jefferson describes coffee as “the favorite beverage of the civilised world” and advises a namesake child to “Adore God. reverence and cherish your parents. love your neighbor as yourself; and your country more than life. be just. be true. murmur not at the ways of Providence, and the life into which you have entered will be the passage to one of eternal and ineffable bliss.”

Book Turkish Origin Migrants and Their Descendants

Download or read book Turkish Origin Migrants and Their Descendants written by Ayhan Kaya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses Muslim-origin immigrant communities in Europe, and the problematic nature of their labelling by both their home and host countries. The author challenges the ways in which both sending and receiving countries encapsulate these migrants within the religiously defined closed box of “Muslim” and/or “Islam”. Transcending binary oppositions of East and West, European and Muslim, local and newcomer, Kaya presents the multiple identities of Muslim-origin immigrants by interrogating the third space paradigm. Turkish Origin Migrants and Their Descendants analyses the complexity of the hyphenated identities of the Turkish-origin community with their intricate religious, ethnic, cultural, ideological and personal elements. This insight into the life-worlds of transnational individuals and local communities will be of interest to students and scholars of the social sciences, migration studies, and political science, especially those concerned with Islamization of radicalism, populism, and Islamophobia in a European context.

Book The Radetzky March

  • Author : Joseph Roth
  • Publisher : Abrams
  • Release : 2002-08-01
  • ISBN : 1590208447
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book The Radetzky March written by Joseph Roth and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author’s masterpiece, an epic saga of a family and an empire in decline, is “full of psychological penetration and tragic force” (The New Yorker). The Radetzky March, Joseph Roth’s classic novel of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, follows three generations of the privileged von Trotta family as Europe advances inexorably toward World War I. With a breadth and richness that draws comparison to Tolstoy, it encompasses the entire social fabric of Austro-Hungarian society. Shot through with dark humor and tragic irony, The Radetzky March is an unparalleled portrait of a civilization in decline, and as such a universal story for our times. “A masterpiece . . . The totality of Joseph Roth’s work is no less than a tragédie humaine achieved in the techniques of modern fiction. No other contemporary writer, not excepting Thomas Mann, has come close to achieving the wholeness . . . that Lukács cites as our impossible aim.” —Nadine Gordimer
