In the midst of the Cold War, the Werkstatt initiated a democratic field of experimentation beyond the pale of traditional vocational and political-institutional standards. Those same years witnessed the establishment of infrastructures in West Germany that paved the way for the emancipation of photography as an art form: Documenta 6 (1977), the first photo galleries and photography journals and a number of pathbreaking exhibitions. Berlin, Hanover and Essen played important roles in that process. This book presents the story of German photography in the 1970s and '80s, its international ties, its protagonists and its networks.

With the construction of the new building by Schulz & Schulz architects, St Trinitas has returned to the center of the city: pro-m-inently situated right across from the monumental town-hall built in 1905. A series of about 120 carefully selected photographs follow the continuous changes at the construction-site between 2012 and 2015. The evolving new architecture also provides the backdrop for a selection of portraits: teenagers celebrating their holy confirmation, workmen of multinational origin as well as the artists that were commissioned to develop works for the building. As photographer Jason Fulford (born 1973) recently learned firsthand, mushrooms have a way of growing and spreading wherever they touch ground. It all started when a friend of Fulford's gave him a box, found at a flea market, full of photos of mushrooms--unassuming pictures taken by an unknown but almost certainly amateur photographer, apparently as notes for some mycological studies. Fulford's art photographs (aside from his well-known book Dancing Pictures, which depicted people getting down to their favorite songs) are usually of staid, quasi-mute objects: a smashed Dorito chip overrun with ants, two bronzed doorknobs spooning, the blank back of a street sign. Yet these mushroom images got stuck in Fulford's mind, like a bad song sometimes does, and they started to grow in his own work. The Mushroom Collector combines some of the original flea-market mushroom pictures with his own images and text by the artist about the project.

Each book gathers images made in Northern Italy and Sardinia between 2009 and 2011, and each includes a short text by Marlene Klein. An unexpected approach runs through all the details of the books, from the way elements repeat, or don't, to the choice of materials and color. Since these three books are each a different trim size but include photos that are reproduced at the exact same size, the collective project functions as a study of the way that ink on paper can inform perception.
