Between 1997 and 2005, Manaka Sensei produced a series of articles for his students dealing with various topics related to the arts studied within the Jinenkan including the techniques, histories and strategies of the various martial Ryuha (lineages). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highest level of consciousness in martial arts is mushin, or "no mind," a state that provided the samurai with no fear of death. To achieve this state is considered the summit of martial arts and Zen practice. But how do you get there? Traditionally the answer has been to train again and again. With twenty years of experience and a black belt in Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu karate, Dr. Ernst Arnold does not dispute the vital importance of training. Instead he combines traditional thought with modern scientific knowledge to help students understand and reach mushin. After providing basic principles of Zen thought, Dr. Arnold dissects the teachings of four of the most respected masters of traditional martial arts: Miyamoto Musashi, Gichin Funakoshi, Masutatsu Oyama, and Bruce Lee. From there he moves into the modern scientific world, explaining what the masters intuitively understood and adding practical strategies of his own. Mushin offers new ways to see and train while upholding traditional approaches. By combining the old with the new, he hopes to point the way to readers to make the leap from martial artisans to true artistry.

Book An Experiment in Criticism

Download or read book An Experiment in Criticism written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Professor Lewis believed that literature exists above all for the joy of the reader and that books should be judged by the kind of reading they invite. He doubted the use of strictly evaluative criticism, especially its condemnations. Literary criticism is traditionally employed in judging books, and 'bad taste' is thought of as a taste for bad books. Professor Lewis's experiment consists in reversing the process, and judging literature itself by the way men read it. He defined a good book as one which can be read in a certain way, a bad book as one which can only be read in another. He was therefore mainly preoccupied with the notion of good reading: and he showed that this, in its surrender to the work on which it is engaged, has something in common with love, with moral action, and with intellectual achievement. In good reading we should be concerned less in altering our own opinions than in entering fully into the opinions of others; 'in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself'. As with all that Professor Lewis wrote, the arguments are stimulating and the examples apt"--Publisher description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete translation of the ultimate Ninja manual—a comprehensive guide to the arts of the ninja, including espionage, warfare, assassination, and more In 1676, a ninja named Fujibayashi collected and combined information from the ninja clans of Iga—regarded to be the homeland of the ninja—and compiled it into an authoritative book. Known as The Bansenhukai, Fujibayashi's book has now been translated into English by the Historical Ninjutsu Research Team and is widely considered to be the ‘bible’ of ninjutsu, the arts of the ninja. The Book of Ninja begins with an in-depth introduction to the history of Fujibayashi's scripture. The teachings themselves, appealingly rendered in this translation, then take us into the secrets of guerrilla warfare and espionage. We learn how to become the ultimate spy, whether through a network of spies or by hiding in plain sight. Through the stealth and concealment tactics of night-time infiltration, through weapon and tool building skills, and through mission planning, we can learn much both about warfare and about adopting the right mindset for tackling our own inner and outer enemies. Adding to the mix for the spycraft lover, there are sections on capturing criminals, performing night raids, making secret codes and signs, and even techniques for predicting the weather, and using an esoteric Buddhist system of divination. An exciting and engaging tome of lost knowledge, The Book of Ninja is the final say in the world of the ninja and the ultimate classic for samurai and ninja enthusiasts alike.
