Book excerpt: Eight strangers were clustered around the campfire of the caravanserai - silhouetted, ragged, and ripened by adventure. As the flames licked the darkness, sparks spitting up into the nocturnal firmament, the traveller dressed in orange cleared his throat and told his tale... And so starts Jinnlore, one of the eight extraordinary Caravanserai Stories - short tales that take the reader on a journey of enchantment and delight. Inspired by his Afghan grandfather's first book, Eastern Moonbeams, published a century ago, Tahir Shah's The Caravanserai Stories are part of the heritage of folklore, of which The Thousand and One Nights is a foundation stone. Shah says: 'Teaching stories such as these have been used throughout much of the world since the dawn of human society. Indeed, teaching stories, fables, legends, and wider folklore are like encoded documents of humanity - constituting a repository of knowledge amassed over millennia.' Regarded as one of the most important and prolific storytellers working today, Tahir Shah's body of work comprises more than sixty books, many of them containing tales and folklore gleaned from all corners of the world.

Download or read book Senses Affects and Archaeology written by José Roberto Pellini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senses and affects, despite what some schools of thought in modern science think, are not only a physiological tool that captures the stimuli present in the world, but are also an apparatus that constantly updates our position in the world. They are material-discursive practices that we employ on a daily basis in the interpretation and evaluation of the world, a material-discursive practice that limits, delimitates, includes and excludes, arranges and rearranges the elements we grasp and interpret within the assemblies in which we are participating. That is why it is so important to understand how we are educated within these material-discursive practices, for this is the first step towards freeing our sense-affective processes and decolonizing our worldview. An archaeology of the senses and affects is aesthetically decolonized. It recognizes that we have been educated within a senso-affective aesthetic that normalizes and colonizes our behaviour. An archaeology of the senses and affects fights against epistemological violence like that manifested in the thinking that people in the past, as well as the present, thought and acted like Westerners.

Jinn eviction as it occurs in the maraboutic institution reproduces ideologies and social hierarchies of traditional society through the use of a variety of healing symbols and rituals. These symbols are delved into for the benefit of understanding the perennial cultural foundations of the discourse and practice of power in Morocco. Download or read book Global Trends for the 21st Century written by Adnan Khan and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim ummah globally does not set trends and when it does it is usually not the right ones. Today the Muslims are divided into over 50 states and none engages in global politics and neither does any of them set the global agenda and thus affect global politics. If the ummah lived under the Khilafah assessing global trends would have practical ramifications as our assessment of the trends would lead to the Khilafah to take a position on global issues and act internationally based on this. But without the Khilafah, this exercise is not fruitless. We cannot start this exercise on the day the Khilafah is established, that would be very short sighted. But the plots and plans against the Ummah and Islam all take place in a global context, the ferocity and success of these plots will be affected by the emerging trends. Not comprehending global trends led to disaster in the past. This is why a report analysing the key global trends for remainder of the 21st century is a necessity for Muslims engaged in the work to bring about change. It is a necessity for the ummah as a whole in order to realise its position in the world

Download or read book Competitive Archaeology in Jordan written by Elena Corbett and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of archaeology in Jordan and Palestine, Competitive Archaeology in Jordan explores how antiquities have been used to build narratives and national identities. Tracing Jordanian history, and the importance of Jerusalem within that history, Corbett analyzes how both foreign and indigenous powers have engaged in a competition over ownership of antiquities and the power to craft history and geography based on archaeological artifacts. She begins with the Ottoman and British Empires—under whose rule the institutions and borders of modern Jordan began to take shape—asking how they used antiquities in varying ways to advance their imperial projects. Corbett continues through the Mandate era and the era of independence of an expanded Hashemite Kingdom, examining how the Hashemites and other factions, both within and beyond Jordan, have tried to define national identity by drawing upon antiquities. Competitive Archaeology in Jordan traces a complex history through the lens of archaeology's power as a modern science to create and give value to spaces, artifacts, peoples, narratives, and academic disciplines. It thus considers the role of archaeology in realizing Jordan's modernity—drawing its map; delineating sacred and secular spaces; validating taxonomies of citizens; justifying legal frameworks and institutions of state; determining logos of the nation for display on stamps, currency, and in museums; and writing history. Framing Jordan's history in this way, Corbett illustrates the manipulation of archaeology by governments, institutions, and individuals to craft narratives, draw borders, and create national identities.

Download or read book The Life of Music in North India written by Daniel M. Neuman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1990-03-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel M. Neuman offers an account of North Indian Hindustani music culture and the changing social context of which it is part, as expressed in the thoughts and actions of its professional musicians. Drawing primarily from fieldwork performed in Delhi in 1969-71—from interviewing musicians, learning and performing on the Indian fiddle, and speaking with music connoisseurs—Neuman examines the cultural and social matrix in which Hindustani music is nurtured, listened and attended to, cultivated, and consumed in contemporary India. Through his interpretation of the impact that modern media, educational institutions, and public performances exert on the music and musicians, Neuman highlights the drama of a great musical tradition engaging a changing world, and presents the adaptive strategies its practitioners employ to practice their art. His work has gained the distinction of introducing a new approach to research on Indian music, and appears in this edition with a new preface by the author.
