Book Footbinding as Fashion

  • Author : John Robert Shepherd
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies of the practice of footbinding in imperial China have theorized that it expressed ethnic identity or that it served an economic function. By analyzing the popularity of footbinding in different places and times, Footbinding as Fashion investigates the claim that early Qing (1644–1911) attempts by Manchu rulers to ban footbinding made it a symbol of anti-Manchu sentiment and Han identity and led to the spread of the practice throughout all levels of society. Detailed case studies of Taiwan, Hebei, and Liaoning provinces exploit rich bodies of previously neglected ethnographic reports, economic surveys, and rare censuses of footbinding to challenge the significance of sedentary female labor and ethnic rivalries as factors leading to the hegemony of the footbinding fashion. The study concludes that, independently of identity politics and economic factors, variations in local status hierarchies and elite culture coupled with status competition and fear of ridicule for not binding girls’ feet best explain how a culturally arbitrary fashion such as footbinding could attain hegemonic status.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jin Ko-Niu: A Brief Sketch of the Life of Jessie M. Johnston for Eighteen Years W. M.A. Missionary in Amoy, China Probably many into whose hands this little in memoriam may fall will, not unnaturally, exclaim, "Where is its raison d'etre? The life sketched in the following pages is devoid of novelty or even of special incident." This was also the feeling of those dearest to Jessie, combined with the difficulty of reproducing her personality, joyous and eager in the days of health - patient and cheery when deprived of it, the only uniqueness being that in both she was so natural: no haloed saint, but a happy Christian girl and woman. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional folk medicine practices in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea OCo all located in Northeast Asia OCo are comparable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Triangle region that joins Burma, Thailand, and Laos is one of the global centers of opiate and methamphetamine production. Opportunistic Chinese businessmen and leaders of various armed groups are largely responsible for the manufacture of these drugs. The region is defined by the apparently conflicting parallel strands of criminality and efforts at state building, a tension embodied by a group of individuals who are simultaneously local political leaders, drug entrepreneurs, and members of heavily armed militias.Ko-lin Chin, a Chinese American criminologist who was born and raised in Burma, conducted five hundred face-to-face interviews with poppy growers, drug dealers, drug users, armed group leaders, law-enforcement authorities, and other key informants in Burma, Thailand, and China. The Golden Triangle provides a lively portrait of a region in constant transition, a place where political development is intimately linked to the vagaries of the global market in illicit drugs.Chin explains the nature of opium growing, heroin and methamphetamine production, drug sales, and drug use. He also shows how government officials who live in these areas view themselves not as drug kingpins, but as people who are carrying the responsibility for local economic development on their shoulders.
