Book Pioneering Cartoonists of Color

Download or read book Pioneering Cartoonists of Color written by Tim Jackson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syndicated cartoonist and illustrator Tim Jackson offers an unprecedented look at the rich yet largely untold story of African American cartoon artists. This book provides a historical record of the people who created seventy-plus comic strips, many editorial cartoons, and illustrations for articles. The volume covers the mid-1880s, the early years of the self-proclaimed Black press, to 1968, when African American cartoon artists were accepted in the so-called mainstream. When the cartoon world was preparing to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the American comic strip, Jackson anticipated that books and articles published upon the anniversary would either exclude African American artists or feature only the three whose work appeared in mainstream newspapers after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968. Jackson was determined to make it impossible for critics and scholars to plead an ignorance of Black cartoonists or to claim that there is no information on them. He began in 1997 cataloging biographies of African American cartoonists, illustrators, and graphic designers, and showing samples of their work. His research involved searching historic newspapers and magazines as well as books and “Who's Who” directories. This project strives not only to record the contributions of African American artists, but also to place them in full historical context. Revealed chronologically, these cartoons offer an invaluable perspective on American history of the Black community during pivotal moments, including the Great Migration, race riots, the Great Depression, and both World Wars. Many of the greatest creators have already died, so Jackson recognizes the stakes in remembering them before this hidden, yet vivid, history is irretrievably lost.

After four years of college, everything is great until the night my boyfriend breaks things off. Reeling and angry, I wander into a small bar and perch on a stool next to an older man. He’s hotter than summer in the Deep South and he goes by the name Steel. We can’t resist the spark between us. One night. No strings, no muss, no fuss. Except for one snag… When I find Steel again, my ex is bumming cash from the man he calls Dad. Even worse, he’s one of my dad’s oldest enemies. Once Steel knows who I am, he’s more interested in my ties to the Riot MC than in the secret I have to tell him. He’s the father of the baby I’m carrying. My extended Riot family wants to protect me at all costs, but it’s hard to say whose hold I want to break out from more–theirs or Steel’s. From Karen Renee, author of the Riot MC series, the next generation is here... let the ride begin.

Book excerpt: “For those looking for a throwback to the writings of Stephen King . . . The Equinox by MJ Preston . . . [brings] horror back to its core” (Philip C. Perron, Dark Discussions Podcast). It has existed for centuries. A dark curse held captive by an ancient ritual, a creature of insatiable hunger possessing the ability to change shape at will. During the spring and fall equinox it would break through the walls, separating our worlds to feed. Now it walks among us, unrestrained, and very hungry. Daniel Blackbird has been chasing the murderous shapeshifter known as The Walker across North America for over a decade, obsessed with vengeance. As the Walker leaves a bloody trail of eviscerated victims in its wake, Blackbird finds himself drawn to the prairie town of Thomasville where a string of child murders is being investigated. There, the chief of police, David Logan has uncovered a mass grave in the cornfield of a local farmer named Stephen Hopper. Hopper has confessed, even identified the graves, but claims that he is merely the caretaker of this macabre burial ground and that a creature who he thinks is the devil is responsible. As Chief Logan grapples with the unthinkable, Blackbird sets out for the prairie town which, as the Equinox approaches, is destined to become a killing ground where cultures and worlds will collide . . . “A tale that horrifies while dispensing generous dollops of Native American mysticism . . . an explosion of tension and violence.” —Horror World
