Book excerpt: An opulent and scholarly catalogue raisonné of Dine's lifelong adventures in printmaking, from woodcuts to books Within Jim Dine's (born 1935) diverse oeuvre, printmaking plays a consistent and overarching role. For six decades now, the artist's enthusiasm for woodcuts, etching and lithography, for drypoint, monotypes and aquatints has not diminished--on the contrary, since 2001 Dine has produced over 750 prints in which he repeatedly discovers fresh expression for his iconic motifs: the hearts and bathrobes, the antique torsos and flowers, not to mention Pinocchio. I Printis the latest in a series of scholarly catalogues raisonnés on Dine's printed oeuvre and comprehensively documents all works produced since 2001, including information on their dimensions, print runs and papers, the complex printing processes that often combine techniques, as well as the printers and workshops involved in their realization. This opulent publication of nearly 400 pages also lists the artist's books and portfolios that Dine has realized over the past 20 years; it is an indispensable reference for collectors, printmaking enthusiasts and academics alike.

Book Jim Dine Flowers and Plants

Download or read book Jim Dine Flowers and Plants written by Marco Livingstone and published by . This book was released on 1994-08-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unusual techniques underlie the uniqueness of much of Dine's botanical work. On several ceramic jars created to his specifications, Dine has drawn towering foxgloves or a clump of crocuses or a strong old trunk with a tangled network of branches - giving these plants an unexpected context that provokes new thinking. His eagerness to get down his ideas leads Dine to press any blank surface into use: two handsome wooden panels, purchased to become doors, now provide the backgrounds for an imposing thicket of weeds and a glorious bunch of gladiolas.

Book Poet Singing the Flowering Sheets

Download or read book Poet Singing the Flowering Sheets written by Jim Dine and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Pop pioneer Jim Dine was asked by Los Angeles' Getty Museum in 2007 to produce the first contemporary project for the Getty Villa in Malibu by responding in some way to its renowned antiquities collection. Dine was drawn to the collection's ancient Greek sculptures and was given a room in the Villa for which he created three new monumental wood sculptures that he painted brightly in the Hellenistic tradition. Dine also wrote a long poem, which he installed alongside the sculptures, on the gallery wall. Jim Dine: Poet Singing (The Flowering Sheets) documents the entire process with photographs by Dine, Diana Michener and Gerhard Steidl. Jim Dine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1935. He came to prominence in New York in the 1960s with Happenings that he orchestrated along with Claes Oldenburg and Allan Kaprow.

Book Jim Dine Electrolyte in Blue

  • Author : Jim Dine
  • Publisher : Steidl
  • Release : 2021-04-30
  • ISBN : 9783958297524
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Jim Dine Electrolyte in Blue written by Jim Dine and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jim Dine?s bluntly honest words, Electrolyte in Blue is a ?long hate poem? about ?the evil in our now small world and those who unleashed it,? exploring themes of anti-Semitism, racism, climate change, as well as the world leaders he condemns, strong among them Donald Trump. Dine?s fury and disappointment are clear, yet his vision is not merely bleak. He lays his words over luminous etchings, aquatints and lithographs of botanical themes in buoyant color. Luscious foliage, flowers, fruit and vegetables celebrate the natural world and offer solace against the social, political and environmental concerns which Dine voices. The book is based upon the original Electrolyte in Blue, a unique book object in an edition of one, typeset and printed by hand by Ruth Lingen, with whom Dine has collaborated for decades. All in all Electrolyte in Blue is a macabre and glorious document, dark and light, full of compelling contradictions, and with Dine?s ?dilemma of trying to stay human and alive under the present circumstances? at its center.

Book Boy in the World

Download or read book Boy in the World written by Jim Dine and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was 6 years old my mother took me to see the Disney Pinocchio film. It has haunted my heart forever! This talking stick, who became a real human after an eternity of tests given to his then wooden semblance of a soul. Geppetto and the author, Carlo Collodi, gave the boy the chance to come to consciousness and therefore join us in this Vale of Tears. His poor burned feet, his misguided judgment, his constant lying, his temporary donkey ears It all adds up to make the sum of him. (Jim Dine) This book re-tells the story of the famous wooden puppet becoming a boy, but this time not only in a metaphorical way. Jime Dine built a sculpture of his favorite figure for the community of Borås, Sweden. The art works assembled in this book give an idea of the importance of this motive for Jim Dine, and of the creative process of construction up to the inauguration of the sculpture in 2008.

Book Jim Dine Some Drawings

Download or read book Jim Dine Some Drawings written by Jim Dine and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of 85 drawings by Jim Dine illustrates the range and mastery of the artist's draftsmanship over more than four decades. The variety and breadth of the selection shows the intense way Dine observes the world around him and the excitement with which he records it on paper. Dine has said that his ability to draw is both a privilege and the result of hard physical training, compelling him to move inexorably forward to capture the next idea or the next psychological insight in drawings that are extraordinarily human. The selection includes early tool pencil drawings and collages, as well as powerful portrait and figure studies in a variety of media. Also included are large painterly pastels executed with a bravura that places them somewhere between painting and drawing. Dine sees his paintings and drawings as essentially conceived and developed in the same way--requiring the same amount of time, emotion and physicality of medium. The only difference, in the end, is that the drawings are on paper.

Download or read book Jim Dine Grace and Beauty written by Jim Dine and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its fairy-tale yet matter-of-fact title, Grace and Beauty reveals Jim Dine's unquenchable enthusiasm for re-imagining his iconic personal motifs-here the Classical torso, hearts and tools-in experimental combinations of media. The book contains his most recent works, all from 2022: mixed-media assemblages, and monumental bronze and stainless-steel sculptures-"an army of sculptures: flowers, machines, and primitive skulls at once"-which he often adorns with thick coats of explosive color. These are hybrid forms between sculpture and painting whose stark contrasts display the artist's quest for new territories of beauty. Dine introduces each group of works with a short personal text and complements them with a series of documentary photographs taken at Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen, where his sculptures are born-the site of his proud collaboration with the foundry's expert team and the crucible for his ongoing struggle with matter. At 87, I paint what I want and how I want so that now the horse I keep tethered in the studio is completely without a rider. - Jim Dine Co-published with Galerie Templon, Paris
