Book excerpt: To accompany a major exhibition at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Amsterdam, 20 scholars and specialists on the early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch have been invited to contribute essays to this publication. Intended to cater to both a general interest readership and to art historians and researchers, the book places an emphasis on significant new scholarship, thus retaining its value amid diverse and evolving perceptions of Bosch and his work. Hieronymus Bosch was unique in creating works of symbolic fantasy using rich forms and colors in a way that makes him the ancestor, 500 years earlier, to the Surrealist painters of the early twentieth century. This volume will help make his work accessible to a wide range of readers, and will considerably advance the scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hieronymus Bosch was painting frightening, yet vaguely likable monsters long before computer games were ever invented, often including a touch of humour. His works are assertive statements about the mental illness that befalls any man who abandons the teachings of Christ. With a life that spanned from 1450 to 1516, Bosch experienced the drama of the highly charged Renaissance and its wars of religion. Medieval tradition and values were crumbling, paving the way to thrust man into a new universe where faith lost some of its power and much of its magic. Bosch set out to warn doubters of the perils awaiting any and all who lost their faith in God. His favourite allegories were heaven, hell, and lust. He believed that everyone had to choose between one of two options: heaven or hell. Bosch brilliantly exploited the symbolism of a wide range of fruits and plants to lend sexual overtones to his themes, which author Virginia Pitts Rembert meticulously deciphers to provide readers with new insight into this fascinating artist and his works.

Book Hieronymus Bosch Between Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Hieronymus Bosch Between Heaven and Hell written by Chris Will and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late-medieval man lived between hope and fear. Heaven was his reward if he was devout, but Hell and all its terrors awaited him if he succumbed to the devil's temptations. In his choice of subject matter Bosch was a child of his times. Although vivid descriptions of the hereafter abounded, Bosch's were different--his rich personal vision and powers of imagination made his work as timeless as the heaven and hell he painted. Here, art historian Chris Will provides insight into Bosch's life and ideas.--From publisher description.

  • Author : Charles D Cuttler

Download or read book Hieronymus Bosch written by Charles D Cuttler and published by Pindar Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Charles D. Cuttler changed from artist to art historian at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, studying under distinguished teachers such as Walter Friedlaender and Erwin Panofsky. A specialist in Flemish painting, he spent the major part of his career teaching at the University of Iowa. He published numerous articles, reviews, and a well known text, Northern Painting. He lectured on Bosch on three continents, and his retirement enabled him to devote time to further research. A result is Hieronymus Bosch: Late Work. This new book presents Cuttler's discoveries on three late triptychs, a major trio of Bosch's maturity: the Haywain, the Lisbon Temptation of St. Anthony, and the Garden of Earthly Delights. He presents Bosch's unique view of Christ and salvation in union with hagiography, the Devotio moderna, and medieval hermeneutics, a revelation of Bosch's immense erudition and overwhelming artistry. Bosch reinforced his concepts with supporting casts of animals, natural and demonic, birds, and other iconographic elements. Analysis of the Berlin painting of St. John the Evangelist's apocalyptic vision of the Virgin Mary, the Madrid Seven Deadly Sins tondo, and the Vienna drawing of the Tree-Man expands our understanding of these themes. Other influences affecting Bosch's art, such as whether he travelled or whether he used contemporary prints, whether he drew upon Dante's Inferno, or religious tracts, and the attitudes of his ambience are also examined. The final chapter presents the author's understanding of Bosch, his religiosity and his genius, in his time and place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible survey on a genius artist, published to accompany the 500th anniversary of Bosch's death Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450-1516) lived and worked in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, where he created enigmatic paintings and drawings full of bizarre creatures, phantasmagoric monsters, and terrifying nightmares. He also depicted detailed landscapes and found inspiration in fundamental moral concepts: seduction, sin, and judgment. This beautiful book accompanies a major exhibition on Bosch's work in his native city, and will feature important new research on his 25 known paintings and 20 drawings. The book, divided into six sections, covers the entirety of the artist's career. It discusses in detail Bosch's Pilgrimage of Life, Bosch and the Life of Christ, his role as a draughtsman, his depictions of saints, and his visualization of Judgment Day and the hereafter, among other topics, and is handsomely illustrated by new photography undertaken by the Bosch Research and Conservation Project Team.

Book All by himself Remarks on painting technique and attributions in regard to Hieronymus Bosch

Download or read book All by himself Remarks on painting technique and attributions in regard to Hieronymus Bosch written by Ron Spronk and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
