Book excerpt: Hieronymous Bosch (c. 1450-1516) was a remarkable artist from the Netherlands who left an indelible mark on the imagination of the world. He was one of the few artists who rose above the conventions of his time and created a new visual language of macabre symbolism, sometimes a literal translation of verbal metaphors found in the Bible. He gave his imagination free rein in works, his paintings populated with grotesque scenes using images of demons and other fantastical creatures to portray the lacking morality of man. Bosch produced at least sixteen triptychs, of which eight are fully intact, and another five in fragments. His most famous work, The Garden of Earthly Delights, depicts the decline of the world through sin, a beautiful garden becoming a dark, fiery nightmare. Like so many of his pieces, it serves as a visual lecture on morality. Hertogenbosch, a city in the Netherlands and Bosch's hometown, celebrates the life and works of the artist in 2016, starting with the largest retrospective ever of Bosch's work being exhibited at the Noordbrabants Museum, 12th February - 8th May. Theatre, dance and musical extravaganzas inspired by Bosch's work will be performed around the city, including a spectacular light show that will be presented on the city's market square. Book excerpt: In Christian tradition, Epiphany is celebrated on 6 January to mark the revelation of the divine nature of Jesus to the three kings from the East. This feast was an extremely popular theme in fine art around the year 1500. It has left us with a large number or festive portrayal, in which the artists excel themselves in their efforts to depict exotic figures and their clothing and attributes. Hieronymus Bosch portrayed the theme a number of times. Two of his own paintings have survived. One of them is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the other is in the Museo del Prado (Madrid). Both paintings were copied and imitated from early on, so we know that they were appreciated. This early appreciation from Bosch's own time is striking. Over thirty early copies remain, making Bosch's interpretation one of the most popular compositions from the Low Countries of the later Middle Ages. The Bosch Research and Conservation Project has studies a number of these copies very closely. What Bosch achieved with the representation of the adoration of the magi is presented here in an accessible way and placed in the correct artistic and cultural/historical context, so that this book is well worth reading, and looking at, for both art historians and the general public.

From 1548 their firm “At the Sign of the Four Winds” issued hundreds of important etchings and engravings. Prints after frescoes and paintings by Italian artists Raphael and Bronzino, the first series of classical ruins, antique sculpture, as well as designs by such Northern artists as Maarten van Heemskerck and Frans Floris were distributed all over Europe and helped to spread Renaissance ideals of beauty. It was Cock who spotted the talent of Pieter Bruegel, an artist who would eventually supply Cock with more than sixty designs for prints.
