Download or read book Leaving the Jewish Fold written by Todd Endelman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-22 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of conversion and assimilation of Jews in Europe and America from the eighteenth century to the present Between the French Revolution and World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews left the Jewish fold—by becoming Christians or, in liberal states, by intermarrying. Telling the stories of both famous and obscure individuals, Leaving the Jewish Fold explores the nature of this drift and defection from Judaism in Europe and America from the eighteenth century to today. Arguing that religious conviction was rarely a motive for Jews who became Christians, Todd Endelman shows that those who severed their Jewish ties were driven above all by pragmatic concerns—especially the desire to escape the stigma of Jewishness and its social, occupational, and emotional burdens. Through a detailed and colorful narrative, Endelman considers the social settings, national contexts, and historical circumstances that encouraged Jews to abandon Judaism, and factors that worked to the opposite effect. Demonstrating that anti-Jewish prejudice weighed more heavily on the Jews of Germany and Austria than those living in France and other liberal states as early as the first half of the nineteenth century, he reexamines how Germany's political and social development deviated from other European states. Endelman also reveals that liberal societies such as Great Britain and the United States, which tolerated Jewish integration, promoted radical assimilation and the dissolution of Jewish ties as often as hostile, illiberal societies such as Germany and Poland. Bringing together extensive research across several languages, Leaving the Jewish Fold will be the essential work on conversion and assimilation in modern Jewish history for years to come.

Book Immigration and Asylum 3 volumes

Download or read book Immigration and Asylum 3 volumes written by Matthew J. Gibney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-06-21 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and timely examination of the history and current status of immigrants and refugees—their stories, the events that led to their movement, and the place of these movements in contemporary history and politics. Immigration and Asylum: From 1900 to the Present is an accessible and up-to-date introduction to the key concepts, terms, personalities, and real-world issues associated with the surge of immigration from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. It focuses on the United States, but is also the first encyclopedic work on the subject that reflects a truly global perspective. With contributions from the world's foremost authorities on the subject, Immigration and Asylum offers nearly 200 entries organized around four themes: immigration and asylum; the major migrating groups around the world; expulsions and other forced population movements; and the politics of migration. In addition to basic entries, the work includes in-depth essays on important trends, events, and current conditions. There is no better resource for exploring just how profoundly the voluntary and forced movement of asylum seekers and refugees has transformed the world—and what that transformation means to us today.

Book Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science 1904 2015

Download or read book Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science 1904 2015 written by Christopher T. Husbands and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an original overall account of the history of sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where the first sociology course as part of a conventional university degree programme in the UK was taught. Thus, the book is unique in its contribution to an important part of the history and development of sociology in the UK. The chapters discuss the names that – at least until the post-war period – are identified as central to the early phase of British sociology. Husbands documents the impact and influence of these leading figures through material in numerous previously little-used archives. Also explored are the culture of LSE Sociology students, their attitudes, political orientations, and academic attainments. The reputation and influence of LSE Sociology on the general development of the subject in the UK are also assessed. The book will be of interest to sociology students and scholars wanting to know about the discipline’s history, as well as to those with a broader interest in higher education policy.
