It retells some classic old Jewish jokes and introduces 40 stand-up comedians who are relatively new on the comedy circuit, with more than 50 direct links to video clips of their acts. Vol. 2: Israel is a Funny Country This second book in the series explores the multifaceted nature of humor in Israel, some of which is intentional and some of which is unintentional. Either way, the quirks of Israeli life contribute to making that life interesting and fulfilling. In the pages of this volume, we take a look at humorous slices of Israeli life, funny TV commercials, unusual stories about food, surprising rabbinic bans on daily activities, simchas as they can only be celebrated in Israel, endearing aspects of Israeli culture, a look at the growing phenomenon of flash mobs, and a glimpse of a few unusual Israeli sports. Vol. 3: Humor in Jewish Life (You Can't Make This Stuff Up) This third book in the series explores the funny, often hilarious situations that occur in everyday Jewish life, including anecdotes from the daily newspapers and blogs that are unbelievable but true. The book includes 67 anecdotes, most linked to online video clips totaling more than 3 hours. It covers funny incidents involving Jews of all denominations, unusual religious rituals, funny stories involving Jewish food, weddings, TV, music, dance, theater, story telling, and seniors having fun. Vol. 4: Jewish Traces in Unexpected Places This fourth book in the series presents anecdotes and associated video clips that reveal the myriad ways that Jewish culture, religion, humor, music, song, and dance have found expression in parts of the world that, at first glance, might not seem supportive of Jewish Life. Vol. 5: Yiddish is a Funny Language This fifth book in the series presents anecdotes and associated video clips that illustrate the colorful humor associated with the Yiddish language. Whether it's Yiddish jokes, Yiddish words and expressions, Yiddish song and dance, Yiddish in theater and film, or Yiddish cooking, you will chuckle at the ways this language of an Eastern Europe that was thought to be long gone has permeated modern Jewish life around the world today. Book The Kustanowitz Kronikle 25 Years of Purim Parody

Download or read book The Kustanowitz Kronikle 25 Years of Purim Parody written by Al Kustanowitz and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1987, IBM introduced its first laser printer, ushering in a new world of desktop publishing for users of the IBM Personal Computer (PC). Al Kustanowitz was an early user of the new printer and associated desktop publishing software. As a member of the IBM marketing team for the new technology, he created examples to demonstrate how it could be used for business and home printing. One of those examples was a family newsletter that he called The Kustanowitz Kronikle. When Purim came around the next year, Al, long a fan of creating Purim parodies, came up with the first Purim issue of the Kronikle. It was distributed to a small group of family and friends. Once bitten by the Purim parody bug, he worked to create an even funnier issue year after year. As the years went by, the distribution list grew and grew. When the Kustanowitz Kids overcame their embarrassment and started to share the Purim Kronikle with their friends, they were recruited to contribute funny parody descriptions of the most popular movies of the previous year. Because the Academy Awards were presented shortly after Purim, they appeared as the Kronikle's Oscar picks. In 2004 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences moved their telecast from March to February, before Purim. So with the Oscars already awarded, the Kronikle created its own Silver Gragger awards to be announced each year on Purim. This book is a collection of the first 25 years of the Purim Kustanowitz Kronikle. Future issues will be posted each Purim on Al's blog, Jewish Humor Central (www.jewishhumorcentral.com).

Featuring photographs of comedians such as Larry David, Fran Lebowitz, Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, Lenny Bruce, Sarah Silverman, Joan Rivers and George Burns, the book's portraits are accompanied by one-liners such as: "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." (Groucho Marx); "When I was a boy the Dead Sea was only sick." (George Burns); "It was a Jewish porno film ... one minute of sex and nine minutes of guilt." (Joan Rivers); "You know who wears sunglasses inside? Blind people and assholes." (Larry David); "I am not the type who wants to go back to the land; I am the type who wants to go back to the hotel." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the host of NPR affiliate’s Forum with Michael Krasny, a compendium of Jewish jokes that packs the punches with hilarious riff after riff and also offers a window into Jewish culture. Michael Krasny has been telling Jewish jokes since his bar mitzvah, and it’s been said that he knows more of them than anyone on the planet. He certainly states his case in this wise, enlightening, and hilarious book that not only collects the best of Jewish humor passed down from generation to generation, but explains the cultural expressions and anxieties behind the laughs. "What’s Jewish Alzheimer’s?" "You forget everything but the grudges." "You must be so proud. Your daughter is the President of the United States!" "Yes. But her brother is a doctor!" "Isn’t Jewish humor masochistic?" "No. And if I hear that one more time I am going to kill myself." With his background as a scholar and public-radio host, Krasny delves deeply into the themes, topics, and form of Jewish humor: chauvinism undercut by irony and self-mockery, the fear of losing cultural identity through assimilation, the importance of vocal inflection in joke-telling, and calls to communal memory, including the use of Yiddish. Borrowing from traditional humor and such Jewish comedy legends as Jackie Mason, Mel Brooks, and Joan Rivers, Larry David, Sarah Silverman, Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Schumer, Let There Be Laughter is an absolute pleasure for the chosen and goyim alike.

Book excerpt: From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on the secret genius of irrational behavior. Have you ever been pissed because you're not pretty enough, and then gotten even more pissed that someone didn't find you as pretty as you think you are? Have you ever obsessed over the size of your thighs while eating dessert, all the while saying you'll work out extra tomorrow? Or spent endless hours wondering why you have to bear the brunt of other people's insecurities? I mean, after all, I'm pretty great. Why cope with insecurities I don't already have? That last one's just me? All right, then. But if the rest sounds familiar, you are experiencing Girl Logic: a characteristically female way of thinking that appears contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world. You end up considering every repercussion of every choice (about dating, career, clothes, lunch) before making a move toward what you really want. And why do we attempt these mental hurdles? Well, that's what this book is all about. The fact is, whether you're obsessing over his last text or the most important meeting of your career, your Girl Logic serves a purpose: It helps push you, question what you want, and clarify what will make you a happier, better person. Girl Logic can be every confident woman's secret weapon, and this book shows you how to wield it.

Book Yes I Can Say That

    Book Details:
  • Author : Judy Gold
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2020-07-28
  • ISBN : 006295377X
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Yes I Can Say That written by Judy Gold and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No one makes me laugh harder than Judy Gold. If I had to pick one comedian to write a book about free speech, it would be Judy." – Amy Schumer From award-winning comedian Judy Gold, a concise, funny, and thoughtful polemic on the current assault on comedy, that explores how it is undermining free speech and a fundamental attack against the integrity of the art. From Mae West and Lenny Bruce to Richard Pryor and Howard Stern to Kathy Griffith and Kevin Hart, comedians have long been under fire for using provocative, often taboo subjects to challenge mores and get a laugh. But in the age of social media, comedians are at greater risk of being silenced, enduring shaming, threats, and damaged careers because of angry, censorious electronic mobs. But while comedians’ work has often been used to rile up detractors, a new threat has emerged from the left: identity politics and notions like "safetyism" and trigger warnings that are now creating a cultural and political standard that runs perilously close to censorship. From college campuses to the Oscars, comics are being censured for old jokes, long-standing comedy traditions, unfinished bits and old material that instead of being forgotten, go viral. For comics like Judy Gold, today’s attacks on comics would have Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce "rolling in their graves." "No one has the right to tell comics what they can or cannot joke about. Do you tell artists what they can or cannot paint?" she asks. Freedom of speech is fundamental for great stand-up comedy. Humor is the most palatable way to discuss a subversive or taboo topic, but it better be funny. A comic's observations are deliberately delivered to entertain, provoke, and lead to an exchange of ideas. "We are truth tellers." More important, the tolerance of free speech is essential for a healthy democracy. In addition to offering readers a quick study on the history of comedy and the arts (noting such historical reference points as The Hays Code) and the threats to them, Gold takes readers on a hilarious ride with chapters such as "Thank God Don Rickles is Dead," as well as her singular take on "micro-aggressions," such as: Person: "OMG! You’re a lesbian? I had no idea. I mean you wear make-up. When did you become a lesbian?" Judy Gold: "Coincidently, right after I met you!" (micro-assault!) In this era of "fake news," partisan politics, and heated rhetoric, the need to protect free speech has never been greater, especially for comics, who often serve as the canaries in the coalmine, monitoring the health of our democracy. Yes I Can Say That is a funny and provocative look at how safe spaces are the very antithesis of comedy as an art form—and an urgent call to arms to protect our most fundamental Constitutional right. There's a good reason it was the FIRST amendment.
