Book Jewish Claims Against East Germany

Download or read book Jewish Claims Against East Germany written by Angelika Timm and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive history of Jewish negotiations with East Germany regarding restitution and reparations for Nazi war crimes. Angelika Timm analyzes the politics of old and new anti-Semitism and the context in which they grew under the officially propagated ideology of antifascism. Investigating the mass of unpublished, newly available archival data from the United States, Israel, and the former German Democratic Republic, and more than forty personal interviews, Timm fills a critical gap in the scholarship on postwar Germany. She analyzes the role of the Holocaust and the image of Jews in the historical consciousness and political culture of East Germany and chronicles the efforts of Jewish organizations, especially the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, to negotiate reparations with the East German state. The unique relationship between ideology and Realpolitik defined the manner in which East Germany confronted the crimes of its past and allowed anti-Semitism to reemerge.

Book Confronting the Perpetrators

Download or read book Confronting the Perpetrators written by Marilyn Henry and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1951, an ad hoc consortium of Jewish organizations received, together with the State of Israel, an invitation to negotiate with West Germany for "moral and material amends" for Nazi-era damages. The consortium became the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, known as the Claims Conference. Over a half-century, the Conference's vigorous pursuit of claims against Germany led to compensation for hundreds of thousands of victims of Nazism. The activities of the Conference expanded from support of individual victims to allocations to special goals, including support for Righteous Gentiles, commemoration of the Holocaust, study and research, etc. Dwells on problems faced by the Conference in dealing with the governments of East Germany and Austria, which before the 1990s did not recognize their countries as successors of the Nazi state, as well as with big companies in West Germany, which did not recognize their responsibility for their part in the Nazi program of "annihilation through work", and thus did not want to compensate their former workers.

Book East German Film and the Holocaust

Download or read book East German Film and the Holocaust written by Elizabeth Ward and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Germany’s ruling party never officially acknowledged responsibility for the crimes committed in Germany’s name during the Third Reich. Instead, it cast communists as both victims of and victors over National Socialist oppression while marginalizing discussions of Jewish suffering. Yet for the 1977 Academy Awards, the Ministry of Culture submitted Jakob der Lügner – a film focused exclusively on Jewish victimhood that would become the only East German film to ever be officially nominated. By combining close analyses of key films with extensive archival research, this book explores how GDR filmmakers depicted Jews and the Holocaust in a country where memories of Nazi persecution were highly prescribed, tightly controlled and invariably political.

Book In the Shadow of the Holocaust

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Holocaust written by Thomas C. Fox and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates six German Jewish writers'' negotiation of Jewish-German-Communist identity in post-Holocaust East Germany. This study investigates the negotiation of Jewish-German-Communist identity in post-Holocaust Germany, specifically East Germany. After an introduction to the political-historical context, it highlights the conflicted writings of six East German Jewish writers: Anna Seghers (1900-1983), Stefan Heym (1913-2001), Stephan Hermlin (1915-1997), Jurek Becker (1937-1997), Peter Edel (1921-1983), and Fred Wander (1917-2006). All were Holocaust survivors. All lost family members in the Holocaust. All were important writers who played a leading role in East German cultural life, and all were loyal citizens and committed socialists, although their definitions of and maneuvers regarding Party loyalty differed greatly. Good soldiers, they viewed their writing as contributing to the social-political revolution taking place in East Germany. Informed by Holocaust and trauma studies, as well as psychology and deconstruction, this study looks for moments when Party discipline falters and other, repressed, thoughts and emotions surface, decentering the works. Some recurring questions addressed include: What is the image of Germans? Do the works evidence revenge fantasies? How does the negotiation of ostensibly mutually exclusive identities play out? Is there acknowledgment of the insufficiency of Communist theory to explain antisemitism, as well as recognition of Stalinist or other forms of Communist antisemitism? Although these writers ultimately established themselves in East Germany, attaining positions of privilege and even power, their best works nonetheless evince an acute sense of endangerment and vulnerability; they are documents both created and marked by trauma.chology and deconstruction, this study looks for moments when Party discipline falters and other, repressed, thoughts and emotions surface, decentering the works.
