Book excerpt: Dialogue participants demonstrate strong motivations for contributing to interreligious dialogue, based on a firm belief that encountering the other generates understanding – the contact thesis. Interreligious dialogue meets with both suspicion and cynicism: the former because it may result in loss of identity, and the latter because important issues may be ignored. The hitherto unanswered question is how Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue affects the identities of its participants. In this study Rachel Reedijk analyses identity construction in an interreligious context against the backdrop of the dominant either/or discourse regarding religious diversity – and, for that matter, multiculturalism – in Western society. The conceptual framework of this study is constituted by the debate on essentialism and constructivism in the social sciences. She argues that, under the right circumstances, interreligious dialogue can move beyond polemics and apologetics and prepare the ground for understanding in the dual sense of prejudice reduction and interreligious hermeneutics.

Book excerpt: This research is about interfaith dialogue among Jews, Christians, and Muslims in New York City. This research was inspired from the global mainstream, that religion is a cause of conflict and from my experience in my country where it is so diverse in terms of religion and culture. This has encouraged me to be more aware of pluralism. Learning from the peacemaker0́9s experience in New York City developed my understanding and respect for other religions, and enhanced my efforts to try to maintain the peace that we have, through my roles as an individual, a teacher, a leader, and a peacemaker. This study revealed that the obstacles in building interfaith dialogue for Jews, Christians and Muslim are prejudices, language differences, the fact that not everybody has equal time flexibility in their lives, a history of distrust, violence, theological perspectives, social and political differences, misunderstanding of the religious texts, lack of experience, and a misunderstanding of historical events. In addition, there are some activities that could be acceptable in building dialogue such as praying together, going to different worship services, celebrating other faith0́9s holidays, such as Passover, Easter or Ramadan, and social, cultural and intellectual activities. This research might be applicable for developing the interfaith dialogue in New York City through the compilation of the experience of some peacemakers. For future research it would be interesting to study interfaith dialogue including various religions in New York City, because this research was only focused on three religions. In future research I would include all religions in New York City, so that the analysis will be more comprehensive. I am also interested in studying more about intra-faith, because there are conflicts in my country and in other Islamic countries, such as the conflict between Shi0́9ah-Sunni in Iraq, or the case of Ahmadiyyah in Indonesia.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to give form to a theology that hyphenates two traditions that have not only been in constant conflict during most of their historical encounters but are also presented as opposite blocks in the threatening ‘clash of civilizations’ at the beginning of the third millennium: Islam and Christianity. Based on experiences of dialogue between the three Abrahamic faiths, this book analyzes historical and contemporary processes of interreligious dialogue between Christians and Muslims in order to arrive at a concept of dialogue as ‘mutual emulation.’ It shows how, in their theologies of religious others, Judaism, Christianity and Islam have based their images of others on their self-images. This characteristic makes traditional theologies of religion quite unsuitable for interreligious dialogue. Consequently, the author of this book develops a model in which comparative theology and interreligious dialogue are connected by studying – as a Christian theologian – the theological and spiritual sources of his Muslim dialogue partners. These exercises in comparative Muslim-Christian theology comprise both the medieval (Aquinas, al-Ghazali, Rumi) and the modern periods (Said Nursi, Fethullah Gülen, Tariq Ramadan). An interlude on Teresa of Avila’s poem Nada te turbe shows how Christians may recover important insights from their own tradition by reading these Muslim theological and spiritual sources.
