Book Old Bohemian and Moravian Jewish Cemeteries

Download or read book Old Bohemian and Moravian Jewish Cemeteries written by Jiri Fiedler and published by . This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the territories of Bohemia and Moravia, in the course of the last 1,000 years, over 600 Jewish religious communities came into being. As a consequence of dramatic historical events, however many of them ceased to exist. In spite of the fact that Jews settled in Bohemia and Moravia as early as the 10th century, with the only exception of Prague, none of the medieval Jewish cemeteries have lasted to this day. Jewish cemeteries are often the only memory of once important Jewish communities in the former Czechoslovakia. Dilapidated, desolate, overgrown by weeds, this photo book will preserve their messages.

Download or read book Rabbis and Revolution written by Michael Miller and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Habsburg province of Moravia straddled a complicated linguistic, cultural, and national space, where German, Slavic, and Jewish spheres overlapped, intermingled, and sometimes clashed. Situated in the heart of Central Europe, Moravia was exposed to major Jewish movements from the East and West, including Haskalah (Jewish enlightenment), Hasidism, and religious reform. Moravia's rooted and thriving rabbinic culture helped moderate these movements and, in the case of Hasidism, keep it at bay. During the Revolution of 1848, Moravia's Jews took an active part in the prolonged and ultimately successful struggle for Jewish emancipation in the Habsburg lands. The revolution ushered in a new age of freedom, but it also precipitated demographic, financial, and social transformations, disrupting entrenched patterns that had characterized Moravian Jewish life since the Middle Ages. These changes emerged precisely when the Czech-German conflict began to dominate public life, throwing Moravia's Jews into the middle of the increasingly virulent nationality conflict. For some, a cautious embrace of Zionism represented a way out of this conflict, but it also represented a continuation of Moravian Jewry's distinctive role as mediator—and often tamer—of the major ideological movements that pervaded Central Europe in the Age of Emancipation.

Book The Holocaust in Bohemia and Moravia

Download or read book The Holocaust in Bohemia and Moravia written by Wolf Gruner and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to Hitler’s occupation, nearly 120,000 Jews inhabited the areas that would become the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; by 1945, all but a handful had either escaped or been deported and murdered by the Nazis. This pioneering study gives a definitive account of the Holocaust as it was carried out in the region, detailing the German and Czech policies, including previously overlooked measures such as small-town ghettoization and forced labor, that shaped Jewish life. Drawing on extensive new evidence, Wolf Gruner demonstrates how the persecution of the Jews as well as their reactions and resistance efforts were the result of complex actions by German authorities in Prague and Berlin as well as the Czech government and local authorities.
