Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years, a seismic shift has occurred in jewelry design and manufacturing. As digital design, digital model-making, and prototyping have elbowed their way into common practice, they have proven themselves to be both invaluable and disruptive to the jewelry profession. Bringing together the perspectives of artisans, educators, students, mavens from the realm of fine jewelry, renegades from the Wild West of the maker movement, and innovators from the digital engineering sector, Digital Meets Handmade addresses a wide range of topics in jewelry design, delving into the broad conversation around how digital technologies and virtuoso handcraft can coalesce in jewelry as wearable art. While one might expect a collision of cultures—"fine jewelry" craftspeople versus digital engineers—the result instead is a dazzling array of critical thinking, with stunning illustrations that foretell the future of jewelry.

Book Contemporary American Jewelry Design

Download or read book Contemporary American Jewelry Design written by Ettagale Blauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phenomenon of Studio Goldsmithing When the history of art in the 1980s is written, much of it will be etched in gold. This is the time of the contemporary goldsmith, an artist who chooses to work in precious metals rather than oils or marble. The contemporary jeweler-as-artist has only recently become a re cognized force. With rare exceptions, the whole field is little more than thirty years old. But it is only within the past fifteen years that these jewelers have entered the jewelry mainstream. The phenomenon of contemporary goldsmithing embraces an eclectic group of artists, each with a unique vision, each taking a per sonal path to jewelry producing. They have as little relationship to the typical, mass-produced jewelry as a champagne maker has to a bottler of orange soda. They approach a piece of art, not a piece of metal. The work is personal and a perfect expression of the "back to the land" movement that spawned it. Many of these goldsmiths were looking not merely for a way to make a living but for a way to make a life that was worthy of living. Running a business while trying to remain a creative metalsmith at the same time is the ongoing challenge. The jeweler-artists have solved or resolved these often conflicting needs in slightly different ways and in a beautiful variety of techniques and styles. Their meth ods, their growth, and their work are discussed here.

Book Jewelry Making and Design

Download or read book Jewelry Making and Design written by Augustus F. Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewelry Making and Design: An Illustrated d104 Book for Teachers, Students of Design, and Craft Workers in Jewelry An abundance of illustrated material will be found, consisting of drawings, designs and photographs of finished work, executed by students of all ages, including the High School, the Art School and the Professional Craftsman. The various materials and processes involved are described in detail, and the necessary equipment for individual or for school use is outlined and illustrated. The numerous designs in the book are shown with the idea of leading the student to think and design for himself and not to copy. Deliberate copying checks the student's development and stunts his individuality. The chapter on Hub and Die Cutting is in cluded in this book to show the modern method of producing a piece of jewelry by machine, that the reader may understand the process, and not that he will attempt the cutting of a hub or die without some experience in steel work. It is hoped that this volume will be found especially helpful to students of jewelry, craftsmen and teachers who are applying design to various materials. The author's thanks are due the following persons who have assisted in the successful completion of the book. To Josephine Beane Rose, for untiring assistance in correcting the text and reading the proof. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
