Nothing is quite as intriguing as "End Times" Nothing is quite as intriguing as "End Times" prophecy being fulfilled before your eyes. This author offers "defined options" to the reader; that is, what does the reconstruction of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem have to do with me and my life? Will these events place me in the position of having to make choices and what are the implications of those choices? If Biblical prophecy is true (and so far it has been fulfilled, down to the smallest detail) then your life will, within 3 1/2 years of the re-building of Solomon's Temple, never be the same. Events will unfold very quickly. The first 3 1/2 years will be peaceful. The Muslims, the Jews, the Christians and all other world religions will feel that world peace has broken out. It is at the end of the 3 1/2 year period that the Great Tribulation will begin and it will start when the anti-Christ (not a devilish looking person, but a very handsome, very persuasive man) declares religion, temples, mosques and churches as places that must be destroyed. He will tell the world that religion is a silly, divisive pursuit, designed to sway and control the masses and what is needed is a "one world" economic and political system devoid of false gods. People will be required to accept the Mark of the Beast, (not some ugly tattoo, but an implanted chip on their right hand or forehead) in order to have transactions. No "chip", no buying and selling. Those who know their Bible know that this is a critical turning point in history. If you accept the Mark of the Beast, if you buy into the compelling rational view of the one world economy with a single political system, you will be sealing your death sentence with God. God expressly forbids His children to succumb to the one who has desecrated His Temple and forbidden all forms of worship. God will send "two witnesses" to oppose the anti-Christ. They will have the power to withhold rain for this entire 3 1/2 year period and no one will be able to destroy these two. They will become the enemy of the anti-Christ and the people, due to the drought and due to their pronouncements of impending doom. At the end of 3 1/2 years they will be killed, their bodies will lie in the street for 3 days and the world will celebrate their death, celebrating and sending each other gifts. The celebration is premature. At the end of the third day, these two rise up and ascend into heaven and shortly thereafter the Battle of Armageddon commences. God's enemies will be destroyed and His people will be protected. Then there will be a 1000 year period of peace. The promised land, from the Nile to the Tigris-Euphrates will be restored and Israel will live in peace. Satan will be bound for this millennium period. At the end of 1000 years, some of those who were not pure blooded Israelites, will, along with Satan who has been loosed for one final attack on God's people, mobilize to destroy Israel. However, God will step in and destroy all of His enemies. Then the Great White Throne Judgment will commence. Jesus Christ and His angels will separate the sheep from the goats, the saints from the sinners and those who are sinners will be consigned to Hades and the earth and everything on it will be destroyed. Then New Jerusalem, heaven, will descend and all of God's people will be eternally with God in perfect peace and harmony, forever.

For millennia, they have defied odds by overcoming the travails of exile, persecution, and recurring plans for their annihilation. Many have attempted to explain this singular success as a result of divine intervention. In this engaging book, David N. Myers charts the long journey of the Jews through history. At the same time, it points to two unlikely-and decidedly this-worldly--factors to explain the survival of the Jews: antisemitism and assimilation. Usually regarded as grave dangers, these two factors have continually interacted with one other to enable the persistence of the Jews. At every turn in their history, not just in the modern age, Jews have adapted to new environments, cultures, languages, and social norms. These bountiful encounters with host societies have exercised the cultural muscle of the Jews, preventing the atrophy that would have occurred if they had not interacted so extensively with the non-Jewish world. It is through these encounters--indeed, through a process of assimilation--that Jews came to develop distinct local customs, speak many different languages, and cultivate diverse musical, culinary, and intellectual traditions. Left unchecked, the Jews' well-honed ability to absorb from surrounding cultures might have led to their disappearance. And yet, the route toward full and unbridled assimilation was checked by the nearly constant presence of hatred toward the Jew. Anti-Jewish expression and actions have regularly accompanied Jews throughout history. Part of the ironic success of antisemitism is its malleability, its talent in assuming new forms and portraying the Jew in diverse and often contradictory images--for example, at once the arch-capitalist and revolutionary Communist. Antisemitism not only served to blunt further assimilation, but, in a paradoxical twist, affirmed the Jew's sense of difference from the host society. And thus together assimilation and antisemitism (at least up to a certain limit) contribute to the survival of the Jews as a highly adaptable and yet distinct group.

Book excerpt: David Rudolph's primary aim is to demonstrate that scholars overstate their case when they maintain that 1 Cor 9:19-23 is incompatible with a Torah-observant Paul. A secondary aim is to show how one might understand 1 Cor 9:19-23 as the discourse of a Jew who remained within the bounds of pluriform Second Temple Judaism. Part I addresses the intertextual, contextual and textual case for the traditional reading of 1 Cor 9:19-23. Weaknesses are pointed out and alternative approaches are considered. The exegetical case in Part II centres on interpreting 1 Cor 9:19-23 in light of Paul's recapitulation in 1 Cor 10:32-11:1, which concludes with the statement, Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Given the food-related and hospitality context of 1 Cor 8-10, and Paul's reference to dominical sayings that point back to Jesus' example and rule of adaptation, it is argued that 1 Cor 9:19-23 reflects Paul's imitation of Jesus' accommodation-oriented table-fellowship with all. As Jesus became all things to all people through eating with ordinary Jews, Pharisees and sinners, Paul became all things to all people through eating with ordinary Jews, strict Jews (those under the law) and Gentile sinners. This Cambridge University dissertation won the 2007 Franz Delitzsch Prize from the Freie Theologische Akademie.

Extensive empirical evidence is used to analyze the social construction of violent and aggressive human behavior, using a sociology of deviance perspective. Political assassinations and executions are placed within their particular cultural matrix to describe how this specific form of killing has been conceptualized as part of an alternative system of justice. "The taking of a human life is generally regarded as the ultimate evil. Given this fact, it is important to examine and understand how it is explained, justified, and cloaked in a 'vocabulary of motives.' Such acts are, in the author's words, 'socially constructed and interpreted,' dependent on the observer's location in a specific 'symbolic-moral universe.'Moreover, such acts (political assassination specifically) are manifestations of struggles that represent attempts to legitimate these world-views, rhetorical devices that serve to define 'boundary-markers' between such universes — moral crusades that attempt to validate one view vis-a-vis another. This general approach to political assassinations is original. Its application to assassinations by Israelis is original. The fact that the book is empirical marks it off from many speculations on the subject. A number of the author's findings make a distinct contribution.
