Book Dictionary of Louisiana French

Download or read book Dictionary of Louisiana French written by Albert Valdman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 2218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane.

Download or read book Value in Art written by Henry M. Sayre and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How did art critics come to speak of light and dark as, respectively, "high in value" and "low in value." In this book, Henry Sayre traces the origins of this usage in one of art history's most famous and racially charged paintings, Manet's Olympia. Masterfully researched and argued, this bold study reveals the extraordinary weight of history and politics that Manet's painting bears, and the presence of slavery at modernism's roots. Sayre shows that it was Émile Zola who introduced a new "law of values" to art criticism in an 1867 essay on Manet. Unpacking the intricate contexts of Zola's essay and of several related paintings of Manet, Sayre argues that Zola's use of the economic metaphor of "value" was doubly coded. On the one hand, it was a feint that deflected attention away from Olympia's actual subject and toward the painting's formal qualities. On the other, Sayre argues, "value" for Zola was a trope for the political economy of slavery and the Second Empire's complicity in the ongoing slave trade in the Americas. Value in Art is a surprising and necessary intervention in our understanding of modern art's emergence in relation to issues of race"--

Her little child is her only companion. Her brother te turns from the war, and the same evening Faust and the fiend also return, the-latter, with devilish intent, singing an insulting serenade. Valentine rushes out, fights with Faust, falls and dies, cursing his sister. Next comes the church scene, where the poor girl, trying to pray, is confused, bewildered, and finally frightened into insanity by the mocking voices of demons near her, who remind her that she is lost, and cannot pray, that there is no mercy left for her. Osman Durrani and Gerald Strauss discuss contexts of the Faust Book, given in the English translation The Historie of the Damnable Life and Deserved Death of Doctor John Faustus. David Wootton compares Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus and the English Faust Book. Klaus L. Berghahn’s analysis of transformations of the theme and seventeenth- and eighteenth-century performance announcements contextualize the popular Puppet-Play of Doctor Faust. Works of Faustian music include the ballad The Just Judgment of God shew’d upon Dr. John Faustus, Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust, and Gounod’s Faust. Essays by Henry Bacon and Steven R. Cerf engage the Faust theme in Romantic music and twentieth-century opera. Osman Durrani introduces 19th-Century American Fausts, represented by Hawthorne’s The Birthmark, and excerpts from Ethan Brand and Melville’s Moby Dick. Faust themes in the 20th and 21st centuries are represented by Valéry’s My Faust, Shapiro’s The Progress of Faust, Osman Durrani’s overview of Faust globalized, and Paul M. Malone’s work on the Faust theme in rock opera. A reading list is included.
