Nous voilà propulsés malgré nous dans le cadre des mathématiques floues et de la morphologie mathématique, des théories qui nous permettront de mieux appréhender l'essence du jeu et de savoir comment les hommes tentent actuellement de programmer des machines pour simuler un véritable adversaire.La morphologie mathématique nous conduira à parler de la dilatation et de l'érosion des figures, comme on l'utilise en traitement d'images. Les mathématiques sont très présentes dans ce domaine... Nous atteindrons les limites d'une telle approche, pour ensuite nous intéresser à la méthode de diffusion du potentiel de Zobrist, mise en oeuvre en 1969 pour créer les premiers programmes informatiques qui jouent au go. Ce sera l'occasion de présenter le modèle de Bruno Bouzy et de son programme de jeu INDIGO qui a fait l'objet de sa thèse de doctorat en informatique en 1995 sous le titre Modélisation cognitive du joueur de go. Les algorithmes ont évolué, mais l'approche de Bouzy nous explique comment on peut les construire.
