Book excerpt: At the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda transformed Western thinking. He showed that, far from being an exotic novelty, Hinduism is an important, legitimate spiritual tradition with valuable lessons for the West. Pathways to Joy is a selection of 108 of his sacred teachings on Vedanta philosophy. In accessible and powerful prose, Vivekananda illuminates the four classical yoga paths — karma, bhakti, raja, and jnana — for the different natures of humankind. The messages focus on the oneness of existence; the divinity of the soul; the truth in all religions; and unifying with the Divine within. Invaluable and inspiring, the selections also explore karma, maya, rebirth, and other great revelations of Hinduism.

Download or read book The Gnostic Gospels written by Elaine Pagels and published by Random House. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time The Gnostic Gospels is a landmark study of the long-buried roots of Christianity, a work of luminous scholarship and wide popular appeal. First published in 1979 to critical acclaim, winning the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, The Gnostic Gospels has continued to grow in reputation and influence over the past two decades. It is now widely recognized as one of the most brilliant and accessible histories of early Christian spirituality published in our time. In 1945 an Egyptian peasant unearthed what proved to be the Gnostic Gospels, thirteen papyrus volumes that expounded a radically different view of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ from that of the New Testament. In this spellbinding book, renowned religious scholar Elaine Pagels elucidates the mysteries and meanings of these sacred texts both in the world of the first Christians and in the context of Christianity today. With insight and passion, Pagels explores a remarkable range of recently discovered gospels, including the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, to show how a variety of “Christianities” emerged at a time of extraordinary spiritual upheaval. Some Christians questioned the need for clergy and church doctrine, and taught that the divine could be discovered through spiritual search. Many others, like Buddhists and Hindus, sought enlightenment—and access to God—within. Such explorations raised questions: Was the resurrection to be understood symbolically and not literally? Was God to be envisioned only in masculine form, or feminine as well? Was martyrdom a necessary—or worthy—expression of faith? These early Christians dared to ask questions that orthodox Christians later suppressed—and their explorations led to profoundly different visions of Jesus and his message. Brilliant, provocative, and stunning in its implications, The Gnostic Gospels is a radical, eloquent reconsideration of the origins of the Christian faith.

Book Jesus Christ and Yoga

  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2023-07-24
  • ISBN : 1639612548
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Jesus Christ and Yoga written by Shyam Sundar Goswami and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only through spirituality can man's meanness and smallness be conquered and his divine nature manifested. To transform materialistic influences requires a gigantic spiritual effort and living spiritual inspiration. This can only be achieved by a great spiritual master. Jesus Christ, who, by millions of people is regarded as an incarnation of God, came into our world to teach us spiritual truths by which we can be free from bondage and attain immortality. His teaching does not consist of mere words but is based on his own realization in silent prayer. His spirituality was not like something grafted on his personality; reality and strength were exhibited in his mode of life and his activities. He came to this world as the Divine Light to show the path which leads to God to human beings who forgot about him in their deep immersion in the vast ocean of worldliness. His spiritual life inspires us. This book is an attempt to study the teachings and activities of Jesus Christ for our spiritual development. Interreligious learning is the norm today, and we have much to learn from how people in other faiths see and interpret even our most fundamental and treasured beliefs. But we need to learn well; we need stellar examples of deep learning. Shyam Sundar Goswami's Jesus Christ and Yoga goes deep into the mystery of Jesus in great detail and with great imagination, drawing on every resource available to the Goswami. Jesus is seen differently indeed from this fresh perspective--even as yoga itself is transformed in the light of Christ the great yogi. Goswami's classic study, accessible once more, is now more timely than ever. Francis X. Clooney, SJ, Parkman Professor of Divinity, Harvard University Sri Goswami's remarkable familiarity with the teachings of Jesus, and his citations of corresponding teachings by the seers of ancient India, offer a significant learning experience for both Christians and members of Eastern religions. The notable resonance, albeit not complete, between classical yoga teaching and aspects of Christian theology and spiritual practice takes yoga far beyond being just a physical "feel-good experience" into being a means for acquiring divine knowledge and deepening one's relationship with God. Fr. Thomas Ryan, CSP, author of Prayer of Heart and Body, Meditation and Yoga as Christian Spiritual Practice

Book The Wisdom of Jesus and the Yoga Siddhas

Download or read book The Wisdom of Jesus and the Yoga Siddhas written by Marshall Govindan and published by Kriya Yoga Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is addressed to serious Biblical students, Christians who are interested in comparing Eastern spiritual teachings with those of Christianity, and students of spiritual Yoga, otherwise known as Classical Yoga and Tantra, as well as students and practitioners of meditation and other spiritual disciplines. The discoveries of ancient manuscripts, and their analysis by independent critical scholars using scientific methods, provide much insight into the original teachings of Jesus. The sayings of Jesus, circulated orally during the first decades following his crucifixion are probably the most authentic source of his teachings that we have available today. These sayings are limited to a few dozen parables, aphorisms and sharp retorts, which were repeated in the oral tradition for two or three decades before they were eventually recorded by the anonymous writers of the Gospels. Remarkably, what Jesus taught through his parables and sayings exactly parallels the yogic teachings of the Yoga Siddhas. For those seeking to apply the wisdom of these sayings in their own life, the implications are clear. Seek not to know about God; instead, seek to know God through higher states of consciousness.

Book How Happiness Happens Bible Study Guide

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a path to happiness that always delivers. Our culture tries to convince us there is one way to happiness: aspire, acquire, desire, retire. We're told that happiness depends on what we hang in our closet, park in our garage, and deposit in our bank account. Yet it's a path that always fails to deliver. In this video Bible study, (DVD/video streaming sold separately) bestselling author Max Lucado looks at several compelling passages in the Bible that reveal how the happiest people on earth aren't those who have the most but those who are willing to give the most away. Max also uses Scripture to show us how to address some of the most common sources of unhappiness, such as: Dealing with difficult people. Coping with tough circumstances. Overcoming low self-esteem. Managing stress. God wants to bring joy to the people of this generation. In his Word, he has given us practical and applicable ways to discover that joy by sharing it with others. Although the world can be a lonely and disappointing place, we can be God's representatives to bring about a cascade of kindness! While we won't be able to solve every problem, we can bring a few smiles to a few faces—and in this way, we might even initiate our own quiet revolution of joy. How Happiness Happens is perfect for small groups of friends or church groups who want to get to know each other better, and for introverts and extroverts alike. This study guide includes: Video teaching notes and discussion questions. Bible exploration. Weekly personal study and reflection materials. Book The Inner Yoga of Happiness

Download or read book The Inner Yoga of Happiness written by Dennis Hill and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we do what we do? Isn’t everything we do, ultimately, to bring us happiness? Think about it. All our planning, all our actions, all our manipulations, all our accumulations, are so that we can just be happy. When we get what we want, really, how long does it last? Is there a way that we can be happy all the time? The drive to fulfill our desires, in practice, does not bring us lasting happiness; so, what can we do? There is one practice that is most essential in revealing the bliss of the Self—and that is meditation. This is the fundamental practice of mystics in all cultures that shows us the happiness that lies just behind the mind and shines its joyous radiance when the mind is at peace. If we will just spend some time every day in this sublime equanimity, we will get everything. The traditional path to the inner yoga of happiness, which is taught in yoga philosophy (Advaita Vedanta), is simply the practice of meditation. In this practice, we distill the inner caprice of thought down to simple stillness. As we get longer stretches of this stillness, we become acquainted with the fullness of our essential being. In this fullness arises spontaneous joy, contentment, and wisdom. This is the happiness that is always there in every moment. This book is a journal of clues along the way in the pursuit of enduring inner happiness, independent of outer circumstances. Also available from this author: Yoga Sutras: The Means to Liberation

Book Truth Realization

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Truth Realization written by Andrew Gordon Lacey and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-06-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people in the Christian community, Jesus is the one and only Son of God, but there is very little evidence, even in the Bible, that Jesus made this claim, regarding himself as the "Son of Man", which means a "person". Jesus recognized not only the all-importance of God the Father, but also that we (including him) are all "gods" in the making, that we are Divine, with the ability to use our Father's Power. This view has similarities to the "Dual Teaching" and "Non-Dual Teaching" schools of Yoga. The purpose of this book is to examine the path of Yoga and the concept of Liberation, particularly in relation to the teachings of Jesus and subsequent practices in Christian Mysticism. It has been claimed by other parties that Jesus was a Yogi of the Indian spiritual paths, the term "Hinduism" being a relatively-modern name given to a variety of such paths. There is certainly evidence supporting this contention in what Jesus taught and stories regarding his travels outside of Judea. Whilst Jesus may not have been purely a Yogi of the Indian traditions, having come across a number of spiritual viewpoints during his living in various countries, his teachings and performance of supernormal feats show that he had extraordinary learning and may have influenced, and been influenced by, the writings of Patanjali, the "father" of Indian Yoga. Indeed, Jesus' core teachings can be looked upon as a form of Yoga, the ultimate aims of which are to lead a good life and achieve heavenly existence. A sceptical but open mind is required in interpreting religious, spiritual, philosophical and scientific beliefs. There is a core of truth in pretty much all belief systems, and indeed a lot of inaccuracies and downright lies, the challenge for the spiritual seeker being to find or develop the right path. This is ideally achieved through wide reading and research, and making up one's own mind as to what is correct. Through learning and challenging of ideas, the truth-seeker can become "Enlightened" and take personal responsibility for his or her path in life, but with the full understanding of the limitations of what can be known, and free of the influences of national culture, religions, politics, viewpoints of friends and associates, and other external influences. The correct way to lead one's life is through one's own choices, there essentially being only one rule, which is to avoid harm to oneself or others (all forms of life) as far as is practically possible. This entails having an outlook primarily of selflessness rather than selfishness, and eliminating all acquired viewpoints and teachings which promote any kind of discontent or harm, even if they are stated to come from God, which they do not. Life is a game or illusion, and the purpose of the game is to attain ultimate happiness, which the Enlightened know is achieved through escaping our Earthly existence and not returning unless we wish to help others stuck in this realm of experience.
