Book The Framework of the Story of Jesus

Download or read book The Framework of the Story of Jesus written by Karl Ludwig Schmidt and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available for the first time in English, Karl Ludwig Schmidt's The Framework of the Story of Jesus (Der Rahmen der Geschichte Jesu) has been a foundation of New Testament studies. Through meticulous analysis, Schmidt demonstrates that the Synoptic Gospels are collections of individual stories that circulated orally and independently in the earliest Christian communities. Schmidt shows persuasively how, in their oral forms, most of these traditions existed apart from any sequence or specific temporal or geographic location, and that the chronology and locations now evident in the Gospels were applied by the evangelists while collecting and recording the oral traditions. Across much of the twentieth century and even into the present day, Schmidt's thesis has undergirded Gospel interpretation. Yet as long as The Framework of the Story of Jesus remained untranslated, Schmidt's ideas have been open to neglect and misinterpretation among Anglophone scholars. Discussion of the Synoptic Gospels and broader New Testament study will be enriched by engagement with the evidence and argument as originally presented.

Book Evangelien harmonien des Mittelalters

Download or read book Evangelien harmonien des Mittelalters written by August den Hollander and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book The Quest of the Historical Jesus

Download or read book The Quest of the Historical Jesus written by Albert Schweitzer and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned scholar and author Albert Schweitzer’s world-changing study of the true life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth The Christian religious tradition has shaped much of our world for two millennia. But separate from the practice of Christianity is the factual life of Jesus himself. In this groundbreaking study, philosopher and Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer delves into biblical text and historical evidence to deconstruct the many myths of Jesus’s life that have been propagated through the centuries. A seminal work, Schweitzer’s book brings into focus the social and political currents of Jesus’s time to rebut previous authors’ hypotheses and form an entirely new one of his own. A milestone text in its time, Schweitzer’s book was so dominant that virtually no new scholarly investigations of the historical Jesus were published for decades after its initial release. Now, more than a century later, The Quest of the Historical Jesus remains the standard against which religious academic studies are measured. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Book The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus

Download or read book The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus written by David W. Chapman and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2015 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this volume set themselves one task, to trace the extra-biblical primary texts that are relevant for understanding Jesus' trial and crucifixion. With that goal in mind, the book is built on three major themes: (1) Jesus' trial / interrogation before the Sanhedrin, (2) Jesus' trial before Pontius Pilatus, and (3) crucifixion as a method of execution in antiquity. In chronologically sequential order (where possible), the authors select and arrange an overwhelming amount of extra-biblical primary texts -- 462 to be exact -- underneath these three categories (75, 46, and 341 texts respectively)."--Brian J. Book Jesus Tradition in the Apostolic Fathers

Download or read book Jesus Tradition in the Apostolic Fathers written by Stephen E. Young and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation reevaluates the tradition of Jesus' sayings in the Apostolic Fathers in light of the growing recognition of the impact of orality upon early Christianity and its writings. At the beginning of the last century it was common to hold that the Apostolic Fathers made wide use of the canonical Gospels. While a number of studies have since called this view into question, many of them simply replace the theory of dependence upon canonical Gospels with one of dependence upon other written sources. No full-scale study of Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers has been published which takes into account the last four decades of new research into oral tradition in the wake of the pioneering work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. Based on this new research, the present dissertation advances the thesis that an oral-traditional source best explains the form and content of the explicit appeals to Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers that predate 2 Clement. In the course of the discussion, attention is drawn to the ways in which the Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers informs our understanding of the use of oral tradition in Christian antiquity.

Book Jesus Rhetoric and Law

Download or read book Jesus Rhetoric and Law written by Henderson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study locates pre-gospel orality and gospel literacy within Greco-Roman rhetorical norms for education and performance. Heavy use of a few basic rhetorical conventions marks the gospel tradition as a marginal yet rhetorically competent attempt to create a Christian public. The book identifies gnomic sayings as the thickest available sample of gospel rhetorics, an alternative to samples based on chreia and parable. Gnome-use is central throughout ancient rhetorical theory and practice. Gnome is therefore an especially good focus for comparative study, particularly of characterisation and legal topicality. This work establishes a credible model of interaction among the speech-habits of Jesus, those of early Christian oral tradition, and the innovative rhetorics of gospel and epistolary texts. The plurality of rhetorical-criticisms current in New Testament studies is also addressed.

Book Paul and the Synoptic Jesus Tradition

Download or read book Paul and the Synoptic Jesus Tradition written by Heinz Hiestermann and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares the Jesus traditions in Paul's genuine letters to the synoptic Jesus tradition. The aim is to identify parallels between Jesus traditions in the Pauline letters and synoptic Gospels and to determine whether the wording of the Pauline Jesus traditions is closer to any particular synoptic Gospel or Q. Paul's quotes of words of the Lord (1 Cor 7:10–11; 9:14; 11:23–25) as well as possible allusions to Jesus traditions in Paul's letters are investigated and compared to similar synoptic sayings of Jesus. Allusions to Jesus traditions in 1 Thessalonians and Romans are revisited. Special attention is paid to possible allusions in Galatians. The findings show that Paul does make use of Jesus traditions resembling those of the synoptics, particularly the Gospel of Matthew.
