Book Jesus the Undistorted Image of God

Download or read book Jesus the Undistorted Image of God written by John Townroe and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publication 192 The Eastern Orthodox description of Jesus as ‘the undistorted image of God’ is based on texts such as ‘the Gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God’ (2 Corinthians 4:4). This is the author’s favourite statement of belief about Jesus in relation to God and of the mysterious attractiveness of Jesus who draws everyone without distinction to God. Christ’s image is inescapable, even when rejected. There seems to be no way of avoiding this person who puzzles, yet attracts, the world. Based on a series of retreat talks, this book may be used for personal private reflection, as material for a group or as a foundation for leading a retreat for others. Each chapter discusses a particular aspect of the personhood of Jesus: His attractiveness, energy, gentleness, fierceness, confidence and steadfastness, and concludes with suggestions for applying the theme to our daily lives.

Book In the image of the Image Gregory of Nyssa s Opposition to Slavery

Download or read book In the image of the Image Gregory of Nyssa s Opposition to Slavery written by Adam Couchman and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2023-07-09 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Gregory of Nyssa is the most important author of the fourth century in relation to theological anthropology, and was one of the most outspoken of the early Church Fathers on the subject of slavery. Gregory’s theology is built upon his perception that Jesus Christ was truly human; therefore, to be human is to be made in the image of Christ. We cannot justify slavery if we accept that humans are made in God’s image, because slaves are no less made in the image of God than those who are free. This book examines Gregory’s theology, how he understood and taught about the relationship of human beings to God, and how he applied this theology to the practical issue of slavery.

  • Pages : 48 pages

Download or read book Bringing Forth Christ written by Saint Bonaventure and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 90 The short though profoundly mystical work, The Five Feasts of the Child Jesus, which is presented here in a new translation, came from the pen of St Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, and one of the most renowned followers of St Francis of Assisi. We are given five meditations on scenes in the life of Christ. Contrary to what one might expect from the title, however, the theme of these meditations is spiritual motherhood, namely the doctrine concerning the mystical birth of God’s Word in the soul and the vocation of every Christian to become a mother of Christ. Men and women alike are invited to fashion their spiritual lives on Mary, the Mother of the Lord and the image of the Church, and to develop the maternal element in their nature. St Bonaventure brought the skills of a poet and a theologian to his task; his work belongs to the rich heritage of Franciscan spirituality, it is also a minor classic of the spiritual tradition of western Christianity and has a message pertinent to our times.

Book Strength in Weakness The Scandal of the Cross

Download or read book Strength in Weakness The Scandal of the Cross written by John W. Rogerson and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 160 These theological reflections on the Cross and Passion of Jesus Christ touch upon some central paradoxes of the Christian faith. Jesus was put to death publicly by crucifixion which, according to traditional Jewish teaching, was a scandal and an affront to God. Yet a Roman centurion present was able to exclaim in awe, ‘Truly this man was the Son of God!’ The book invites us to ponder instances where strength was manifested in weakness, not only for Jesus – in Gethsemane, at his Trial and on the Cross – but also for those two pillars of the early Church, Peter and Paul, as they too wrestled with ‘the Scandal of the Cross’.

Book Anselm of Canterbury A Monastic Scholar

Download or read book Anselm of Canterbury A Monastic Scholar written by Sister Benedicta Ward SLG and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2024-05-20 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 62 Saint Anselm (1033–1109) was abbot of the Norman monastery of Bec, and later Archbishop of Canterbury under William Rufus and Henry I. In this short study of one of the most original thinkers of the earlier Middle Ages, Sister Benedicta discusses the relationship between Anselm’s scholarship and his life as a monk, showing how the one grew naturally out of the other. Anselm’s understanding of the inter-connections of reason and faith, thought and prayer, which can be traced throughout his writings, both theological and devotional, remains significant for Christian scholarship in any age. At the same time he was one of the most attractive, loving and compassionate of men. Simplicity, humanity and gentleness are joined in Anselm to the clear and sane mind of a great scholar.

Fractured meaning is celebrated, even in its incompleteness, alongside the pleasure of wholeness, inner certainty and realization.

Book The Way and the Truth and the Life

Download or read book The Way and the Truth and the Life written by James Ramsay and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 210 Essential to the message of the Gospels is that they tell a story. This is true of the theologically complex fourth Gospel as much as of the more obviously narrative Synoptic Gospels. This brief exploration of St John’s narrative argues that its theological meaning can be properly understood only when seen as integrally part of a holistic drama. ‘Made flesh’, the Divine Word draws us through the power of story to become participants in this drama, at the same time generating creative tension through conceptual discourses that prevent us from being, so to speak, swallowed up by it. Christ the Way, Truth, and Life offers us, it is proposed, a redemptive integration of different fundamental archetypes of human spirituality that can help us at a practical level in determining the narrative of our own lives as followers of the Way.

Download or read book Encountering the Depths written by Mother Mary Clare SLG and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 218 This is a book about the nature and practice of prayer for the serious Christian, lay and clerical, in which the problems of the spiritual life in the modern world are presented as a challenge. Mother Mary Clare, who was one of the Anglican Church’s leading spiritual directors, takes the major contemplative themes and brings to them her unique blend of spiritual realism, vision and authority. Prayer begins and ends in the inescapable necessity of a relationship with God; the dimension of silence reveals that praying is not only an action but a still contemplation; the path of spiritual progress is to discern in the union of action and contemplation a deeper listening which leads to an apostolate of prayer renewing the action of contemplation. It is all God’s Work. In his foreword, Bishop Michael Ramsey writes: ‘I hope this little book will have many readers, as I am sure it will help them as it has helped me … Christian lives which know contemplation will be lives nearer the love of God…’

Book Christian Egalitarian Leadership

Download or read book Christian Egalitarian Leadership written by Aida Besancon Spencer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written on servant leadership, but it is not always tied to egalitarian leadership. Sometimes authority and power instead of God’s love are presented as the core of the Christian faith. The church at times derails, imitating worldly culture, emphasizing entitlement that relies on an innate or permanent human hierarchy of rank. Responding to today’s conflict over leadership, Christian Egalitarian Leadership calls us back to its biblical roots: what is Christian egalitarian leadership? Why is it biblical? How does it work? Thoughtful and devout Christian leaders carefully explain how sharing leadership follows God’s intentions and is crucial to implement today. The theoretical and practical ramifications of these concepts are extended to many areas of the Christian life by numerous qualified individuals, women and men of different races and economic and social classes. Chapters overview New Testament teachings, biblical authority, Old Testament and contemporary examples, God’s intention at creation, pagan philosophy’s influence on Christian hierarchal leadership, multicultural and multi-ethnic leadership in the United States and Africa, marriage, rearing children, equipping youth and laity, church planting, retirement, and missions, from the cradle to the mission field.
