I believe in the his torical Jesus, but I have tried to show how even the Church can get on, if it should ever have to do so, without him, and that this might possibly ultimately make for greater spirituality. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus, the Christ, in the Light of Psychology, Vol. 2 Stanton collects 400 references in the New Testament to as many passages in the Old, which together he thinks define the entire career Of the Messiah from his preexistence in heaven to his resumption of a place in the Trinity at God's right hand after the Resurrection. Some of these are very explicit in detail. If the Old Testament passages are prescriptions they leave little room for freedom. His life had been written beforehand, and Jesus in assuming Messianity had Simply to assemble the specifications from their many places and contexts and order his life with fidelity to these old oracles. From this point of View we Should have to regard him as a studious compiler, diligently seeking cues and conscientiously following them as his rule of life. We might conceive that at some stage he realized how many circumstances in his past conformed to these rubrics, and from that point he took his life in hand to make the rest of it conform more perfectly. Thus many a savage ruler is moulded by prescriptions that define all his Tun and H aben, his licet and non licet, and later accepts for himself these taboos and exacting customs that may make a king's life a burden with constant fear of transgression. Some of these requirements happily are very generic, but they range from the most trivial points of etiquette to fundamentals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus, the Christ, in the Light of Psychology, Vol. 1 From Paul down to the end of the Scholastic period, Christological problems were treated theologically. Scotists and Thomists alike especially reserved most questions in this field from treatment by reason as themes of faith and mystic intuition alone. With the rise of Protestantism and the systems of modern philosophy, speculative thought began to deal freely with the person, work and words of Jesus, a movement that culminated in Hegel and his left-wing followers. In the ebb of this movement, and to no small extent made feasible and even stimulated by it, came the great historico-critical movement best marked by the Tubingen School. As a result of these studies which subjected the New Testament texts to a new treatment as free as that applied to other ancient documents, and which brought to bear the same methods that had given the world new histories of Greece and Rome, and by utilizing the copious newly unearthed archaeological data, the synoptic Jesus became the centre of interest. He was, how-t ever, divested of his supernatural attributes and reduced to the dimensions ofl a great religious teacher and reformer and a purely human paragon of virtue. I These researches together constitute one of the greatest triumphs of modern scholarship and intellectual acumen and have shed a flood of new light along all the way of Jesus, from the manger to the entombment. The achievements of these methods, great and enduring as they are, seem to be essentially finished, and only details and further syntheses of data already disclosed yet remain. The inevitable next step with all this wealth of material must be psychological. It is this step that the author attempts to take in this volume. Profoundly realizing his own incompetence to do justice to his theme, he regards himself nevertheless, as a pioneer in a new domain in which he is certain to be followed by many others, and is convinced that the psychological Jesus Christ is the true and living Christ of the present and of the future. He is the spiritual Christ of the Resurrection whom alone Paul knew and proclaimed, although he is here described in modern terms, and it is this that now chiefly matters rather than what an historical person was or did in Palestine, two thousand years ago. Now that the old materialistic and forensic views of the vicarious atonement are transcended, even the historicity of Jesus becomes somewhat less vitally significant than it was once thought to be. Book The Psychology of Jesus

Download or read book The Psychology of Jesus written by Albert Wellman Hitchcock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Jesus: A Study of the Development of His Self-Consciousness The standpoint from which this study is made is rather that of a layman than of a theologian, and the treatment of questions of theology is fuller and simpler in some places on that account. Each age must get at the truth through the forms of thought given into its keeping. Out of the inherited words and the old methods of approach, the student gathers up the essential truth in every sphere and recasts it in the newer and more familiar shapes of his day. The study of the psychological development of Jesus was assured from the time when in 1863 H. Holzmann asserted that Jesus did not claim to be the Messiah until after the episode at Caesarea Philippi. The battle-ground of criticism has been chosen in the realm of psychology of late, and scholarship is divided upon the question whether we are justified in treating the Gospels as of such historic value as to afford material for a psychology of Jesus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Psychology, Vol. 1 of 4 During the life of Jesus Christ on earth, he rebuked those then professing to be explainers of God's Word thus - "Ye have taken away the key of knowledge." With equal justice might a similar accusation be brought, in this age, against our theologians - "Ye have taken away the key of knowledge. The Arch-Deceiver has once more destroyed the simple truth by Ye shall not surely die, by inculcating the immortality of the soul. Every religion must be based upon its own psychology. The assertion that the deity is the soul of the world, when credited, tends to Pantheism. By this system, the human soul is declared a discerption from the divine soul, and to be merged, at man's decease, into the Universal Spirit.
